UPA Pro Tour Championships

It isn't necesarily luck if you miss a ball and manage to get safe. I play two and three way shots all of the time, expecially on tighter tables in case I somehow miss.

J-man,
Welcome back.

Actually, the criteria for a "lucky" shot is simple (as told to me by a top pro after I made one:) :) ). If you miss the 3 ball, and whitey comes to rest in a position where you can't make the 3 or the 4 ball; then you KNOW it was a lucky shot and NOT a two-way shot. I believe JS is well aware of the difference.

Thanks-Thats the domain it was originally- then it went to .org and now here we are back where we started. I cant get a schedule to show but anyway it looks like something is happening. I completely forgot VF was a UPA thing-Afterall, it was 2 weeks ago. Thanks

Hey there Nostroke. I have been traveling and just received your post. The UPA has never not existed in the recent years - the end of last year there was a transition period, thus the reason for limited events. The website is down and a new site is in the works, that is why there is a maintenance tag on it - this does not mean the tour does not exist. The VF event was sanctioned by the UPA and was the first event of the season, the 2006 Pro Tour Championships is underway, and there are several more events in the works for this year. Everything is a bit delayed because of the transitions. You asked who was running it, Frank Alvarez is the President. I will not be around for a couple more days, but thought I would offer that up so that rumors stay at a minimum.

Take care.

I had not seen Petroni play in person before and I was very impressed. He and Putnam got into a bit of a ruckus over the racking, which seems to be happening quite a lot. The tension/stress level is palpable at this tournament and I think a lot of it has to do with the tough playing conditions.

Johnny got into it with a spectator during his hill-hill win over Park, and was very agitated the whole second half of the match. He and Efren both made nice outs in the case game to win at hill-hill. Efren's break and run at 10-10 against Tang was pretty sporty, especially his thin cut on the 3, left-handed! He went four cushions around the table (short-long-short-long) for shape on the 4. Charlie Bryant's break was very strong, and he played very well to back it up. They're breaking from the box on tight pockets, and that kind of break is huge under these conditions.

Archer's match with Park took 3 hours and 12 minutes, btw!

Petroni looked very strong beating Rafael 3 sets at Hard Times early in the week but along came Francisco the next day and changed the world around for him. They played on table 1 both days where the pockets accept barely 1 3/4 balls.

Busty and Mika will be playing for the Hot Seat tomorrow. Busty beat Johnny badly and Mika got by Hillbilly and his big break.

Right now, Charley is battling Rob Saez (who finally knocked out Shane) and Johnny is playing Raj. The winner will face each other in the first match tomorrow.

I HATE the fact that after four days of Race To Eleven, all matches tomorrow will be Races To Seven. On new cloth too. Somebody hates pool at ESPN and the promoters allow them to get away with it. It sucks big time.

Thanks Jay.
Then we gotta hear Mitch Lawrence's voice.
" Here's the lag which could be the most important shot of the match".
Alternate breaks too?

That is simply ridiculous. By the time ESPN are finished butchering the footage we'll be lucky to see a single rack! Makes me bloody sick!

ayn updates in the Bustamante vs Archer finals?

If Bustamante is defeated by Archer, does he get a second chance because of the double elimination rule or does Archer win the title automatically once he defeats Bustamante?

Is the finals finished already? Who won?

Hello Jay, please update us here in Manla as to result of Django - Johnny final. Thanks, and hoping to see you back at One Side.

Reports are 7-6 Bustamante wins it.

I disagree with your comment on the 3 foul situation. Did you see the layout of the table, which may have prompted Shane to 3 foul him? It is in the rules so what is wrong with it? I think if the balls were truely open Shane would have run them. But the way it is posted it infers Shane 3 fouled him just to piss him off. And even if he did 3 foul him to piss him off, who says he didn't have it coming?

I Heard Busta Came Back From Hill-2. Archer Made A Few Mistakes To Open The Door.

Johnny had him 6-2 and made a couple of mistakes to let Django back in. The final game was a thriller, with both players having a chance to win. Johnny missed a long 4 ball and Busty made it and got on a 6-9 combo for the match.

It will all be on ESPN in early May (maybe the 5th or 6th). The last three matches were all well played on very tough equipment. Some good pool here that hopefully won't get chopped to pieces.

Johnny Archer played some terrific pool today. Almost every time his opponent made a mistake he pounced and took control of the set. He did that against Saez and he did that against Mika. Mika was up 4-2, IIRC, and Johnny came back for the 7-4 win. Johnny was up on Bustamante 6-2, and playing very strong pool on some tough equipment, as did Bustamante. A short report to follow...

I thought Johnny got a couple bad breaks in the final set against Bustamante, once when some guy jabbering loudly over near the door to the room wouldn't shut up, and then when Mitch Laurence raised his voice up in the commentary booth as Johnny was shooting a 2-ball down the rail. It was loud enough for almost everyone to hear, and Johnny definitely got distracted by it, and looked up at the booth after he missed the 2. Johnny was on the hill at that point, and had just made a great shot on the 1, slicing it razor thin into the corner pocket and going up and down the table for shape. Cell phones were also going off left and right, despite several pleas from Scott Smith and Kim Davenport, and a few looks from Johnny, to turn them off. I really wish spectators would be more respectful of these great players.

The last rack was thrilling. Johnny broke and made 3 balls, but had no shot on the 1. He played safe, banking the 1 two cushions down the table and bringing the cueball to the headrail. But the 1 clipped a ball down table and left Bustamante a long, tough shot while bridging on the rail. He missed and left Johnny a shot on the 1 in the side, but he had to go up and down the table for shape on the 4 down on the end rail. He came up short on the shape, then with the shot clock winding down he played a beautiful safety off the 4, bringing the cueball down table and behind the 6. Bustamante kicked two cushions, hit the 4, and left a long, thin cut on the 4 into the corner. Meanwhile, the 6 was repositioned for a dead combo on the 9 in front of the corner pocket down table.

Johnny hit the 4 too full, and left a near straight-in shot, which Bustamante made, drawing back for the easy 6-9 combo to win the match and the tournament. Francisco played great pool all week and deserved the win. Both men were very gracious afterward--Francisco in victory, and Johnny in defeat--signing autographs and posing for pictures. I thought it was a great tournament. The tough equipment and alternate breaks from the box made for some exciting pool. You had to hit the balls clean and every run out was well earned.

The last four matches were taped and will air on ESPN in early May, I believe.

I think it's time for TDs' to implement stricter guidelines and rules concerning crowd control. there should be atleast an usher that would check and remind the crowd before they enter the arena to turn off their ringers and avoid loud conversations and any other behavior that could distract the players playing. a single warning is given on the first offense and a second one is an immediate eviction from the arena.

Like Bob said, the 3-foul rule is in the books and legal.

Who says he had to 'have it coming'? F'ing with your opponents mind is a purely legit way of winning, as long as it is w/in the rules!!!
