Varner vs ?? All around.

They had a poll on here about how many rack you had run. Looking at the results it seems like a decent percentage of AZers could step up!

I am not one of them (no 10+ packs for me). :)

Seriously, he and Mike Sigel had one of the biggest rivalries pool has ever seen and seeing them do battle one last time in an all around format would be awesome. Sigel is one of the greatest all around players ever.

I second this.

Throwing Nick up against someone who is still competing all the time like Efren is doesn't seem like it would be a fair matchup. I could be wrong though.

Varner vs. Sigel seems like it would be a good matchup of two guys that still play awesome pool but just aren't quite playing at the top of their games simply because they are not competing full time.

Sigel is one of the greatest all around jerks too.

Have you ever met him?

I have and he was a cool guy and easy to chat with.

What is your experience that would make you comment as you did?

Of course I have met him.

First, several years ago when he had just started selling his cues. I was looking at them, and I think (saying think because I am not sure of where it was), it might have been at the SBE. I was looking at them and he made some flipping comment of these were expensive cues not to touch them.......His cues are CNC, with some of the ugliest inlays. It amazes me that people would even want them but whatever. They sold for too much to folks that didnt know better and my experience you cant hardly give them away today.

Secondly, I have heard him, and I know that there is fine line between confidence and arrogance. Frankly, he either doesn’t care or doesn’t know that a line exists.

Finally, IMO, he was partially responsible for the IPT with his buddy Kevin. I know several guys that left their jobs and devoted themselves to this "dream" that he was a salesman for. I think old Mikey boy got his cash, but the others not so much.

If I never hear or see him again that would be just fine for me.

Varner/Sigel or Varner/Hopkins or Varner/Daulton.... Either if those match ups get my vote...
Daulton??? I'm just not sure he is in the same league as Varner although I do not know him or watched him very much. Would people want to see that match up? I can understand the others but this is one I am just not sure of.

Shannon Daulton in one hole and banks?

Bfdlad surely that was young in cheek.

I actually just spoke to Shannon. Bank Pool hall of Fame and 1 pocket hall of fame. He may be able to play a little :) Still the question is, if I were to do a PPV would I get as many viewers as I would for another player? I know Sigel is up there and may have more face time with TV, pool mags etc and Buddy would be great but unsure on if he could make it to the place were were gonna do this. It could be in Oregon and I know he don't like that kind of travel anymore. So Shannon is a good choice but I need asses in seats to make it worth it to sponsors.

I think if I can get one going maybe the winner can play the next on the list once we figure out if a all around is popular enough. Thanks for your input Todd.

Get Sigel.... Best opponent for Nick, and tell him he can come do some bass fishing down here just for incentive!.. lol

Film it in Kentucky... Easy for Buddy, Nick or Shannon....
This is also for Ken4Fun. The location ideas are great however most of the time the people who would sponsor a weekend event like this are obviously the pool room and local busness people so its hard to just pick out locations. I really like Tracy at High pockets in Memphis, great guy but I am almost positive he would not be willing to put up all the money that is needed to make this happen. So where does the rest of it come from? I do not know anyone in Memphis who loves pool and would be willing to sponor it. I guess all I am saying is I have to try areas that I have some contacts who may be willing to do some sponsorship. I am waiting for an answer and hope to get one today. If that does not work I got to try something else.

Nick Varner - The Early Years- Story contributed by will8834

Bobbi Newbols told me a couple of stories about Nick Varner when Nick was in his early twenties. He and Bobbi had a couple of matches and went on be good friends and to go out on the road together.

Nick had a buddy drop him off at a pool room to play with a guy named John Smith (unsure of the players real name). The guy who was steering Nick told him to try to play Smith or someone else but do not play Bobbi Newbols. So Nick goes in and his partner leaves. Nick goes to the counter and talks to the counter man about wanting to play some with Smith is he around. The counter man says he is right there. So Nick goes over and they set up a game of onepocket. A couple of hours later his partner comes and saw Nick standing there with his pockets pulled out looking for some more money. His partner walks up to him and ask him what are you doing. He said Im playing Smith like you told me, and he is really playing good and im busted. His partner looks at him and says, that isn’t smith that is Bobbi Newbols they got you.

Shannon = one of the best all around players on the planet..If he feels like playing u can bet there ain't but 2 or 3 that will beat him playing all around banks..nine ball and one pocket...Actually im not sure there is 3..Nick will tell u the same thing I'm sure..

Tracy is an awesome pool room owner. He puts players in tournaments all over and does a great job running his business as well. A phone call might be a good start.

I was originally hoping that TAR would pick this up. JCIN mentioned he would love to have Nick play in an all around event. Airfare to Vegas is the cheapest in the country. But some has noted keeping it local might be even cheaper. TAR has the advantage of experience, a place, and knowing how to promote it. I recommend you touch base with the boys at TAR, and secondly Tracy.

Big Truck comes down here for tournaments often but I have only seen him at The Rack. Problem with The Rack is its pretty cramped for space and I honestly think alot more folks would come to see at Highpockets.

As far as sponsors, IMO, anyone who streams it would at least break even. I cant see it being a big money maker for anyone, but what in pool is a big money maker?

Ken, you have to remember that although I love putting things on for the pool community and enjoy what I do, this is how I make my money. Its not a alot of money buyt I love what I do. Therefore talking to TAR (Who by the way I have a great relationship with) does not make money for me. I know that may soiund greedy but there is alot of work that goes into these and I know not many would do it for free unless they are already set financially and just want to do it. Breaking even for a streamer again would be a no go either. I have spoken to many of them and believe me they all want something out of it at the end. Again I appreciate your comments and I am really not trying to be rude or anything like that but there is alot more to these things than most people think. Even for TAR its not as easy as getting the funds together and getting the players there.

This is a little off subject but has anybody seen Nick loose his cool at the table? He seems like one of the most composed, happy go lucky players I have ever seen.

I also like a Varner vs Efren match up.

I would like to see them play

Straight pool
8 ball
Banks

I would really like to see them playing American Rotation.

The Kentucky Colonel and the Magician......yup I'd pay to see it.
