That long time in the hospital bed really did a number on him, he lost nearly 40 pounds and could barely walk the day he came home. Still on the oxygen and at home resting now as per the doctor orders. He has an appt with his lung doctor soon so we'll know more then about when he can come off the oxygen and return to work. He is much better now though and can walk around the room, shower, shave without help. Thats a huge improvement. He should be back up and at it before too much longer.

Glad he is better, Guys I went to hospital and he was very sick so leave him alone and let him get well he will make it right to everyone but I am sure he would have been working rather than hospital.
 
Whatever Kevin is going through is surely horrible. This just reminds me to be more careful in the shop, because I can forsee the same thing happening to me due to exposure.

Best wishes from overseas, too- take your time and get really strong enough before you even think about working again.

Even though his checkered past has made posts like this seem to odd, but we forget some of us ARE sick all day everyday and will never recover.

I hope this is not the case with KV. Even though when he had a bad name on here I liked alot of his work and was thinking today of emailing him about a cue and I found this post trying to find an email to him.

On the dangers of atleast spraying any kind of basecoat/clearcoat. My brother has done it professionally for about 21 years on cars and started about 4 years before that on the side. He has no problems from it. He always used safety first and when I worked there he stayed on my tail about it too even though it was a summer job for me in between school. That I can thank him for. The guy that was his mentor coughs up blood all the time because of poor ventilation and not wearing a respirator when shooting. It doesnt take long guys! That is serious! They have the warning label on there for a reason!!!

BTW, didnt read the whole thread yet and hope the dude didnt have a heart attack and hope he's alive. Pure oxygen and preventive measures can sure help get back on track. Breathing treatments are a dream! During my near death bout with pneumonia it damn sure saved my life! Then it STILL took atleast a month for me to have the energy to have sex much less work.

Arnot, they can heal but it takes a LONG time. Its like when I quit smoking, I had the smokers cough for months and it was from my lungs cleaning themselves out. They do try to recover themselves and "can", it just depends on how much damage is done. I hope for you its not too late. Wishing you luck in recovery Arnot,

Nice to hear Kevin is on the mend!!!

I was a commercial hard hat diver for over 30 years in my past life. We breathed air in our helmets that was pumped via our hose from a reciprocating air compressor. Not only did we have to do daily inspections of the air, we also had to have multiple filters for moisture, particulate and oil should it migrate past the rings due to overheating from a stuck valve for example.

My point being is that oil in your breathing air produces a pulmonary pneumonia and it causes irreversible damage to you lungs. I am not a doctor but I think chemicals and some dusts can due permanent damage to you respirataotry system.

Yes you will recover if taken away from that environment but there may be changes in your lungs function and hemoglobin oxygenation.

Botton line is to have air filtration equipment in your shop to reduce airborne particles. Where a mask when making dust and spraying. Locate your shops vacuum system outdoors in a shed or a trailer because the small particulate matter that migrates past the micron filters of a big system or just a shop vac is just as hazardous.

Don't think that having a shop vac suck up the dust is going to solve the problem if the exhaust is in the same room. Remember that people develop problems because of chronic exposure over a period of time.

Be safe and smart and don't take any chances.

CA Finish

I understand that Kevin used CA Finish on his cues. I don't know how harmful that stuff is but the couple of times I god a bad whiff of that stuff scared me.

I WILL NOT EVER USE ANYTHING BUT WATER BASED FINISH AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
I have been involved with the applications of coatings for over 40 years. Anyone involved with spraying of any solvent or water borne product should be very careful. In water based products there are drying agents as well as anti freeze agents neither are good for your lungs. Some years ago over 2000 people were killed in Bhopal India when methyl isocyanate (sp) escaped into the air, it is a common drying agent in coatings. Spraying any sealer without a proper fitting mask with clean filters is not very smart. I do not even trust the manufacturers to give good advice with regards to their products and always wear masks. It's much better to be safe than sorry!! I would not wish lung problems on my worst enemy, suffocating slowly every day is not fun.. BE CAREFUL YOU ONLY HAVE ONE LIFE!
I hope KV is felling better and on his way to a full recovery!!
 
Is this all speculation or has an exact cause been listed?
All the safety advise is great and should be heeded, but I was hoping Kevin would let us know what the actual cause is/was.

I too hope Kevin lets us know exactly what happened once he is better. I have been having some health problem and hope it is not related to cue making. I always try to wear my respirator and eye protection but do not have a dedicated air filtration system. It is next on my list though.

What is the perfect setup for dust and other particles in the air? I am not really sure the difference between the dust collectors, ceiling mounted air filters and the other options out there.

My plan was to get a roll around dust collector but not really sure about the other things available and what to buy for finer dust.

I hope for the best and a speedy recovery for Kevn. I really hope that his wife and kids are doing ok during this time. People tend to forget about our families during times like these! We lose a cue builder is something was to happen. God forbid that to happen!! Mrs Varney loses a husband and his kids loses a father! Way more important than anything that goes on here! My heart goes out the the Varney family!
KV let me know if I can help! I know I run way behind in my shop. Probably truth be known most of us do! So try to wait for KV himself to respond back on here. So Mrs Varney doesnt have any more additional stress at this time... Just for the record I dont know KV at all. Never even had a conversation on the phone. I do know what goes on here. I would be saying the exact same things if it was a close builder friend.

With proper ventilation and a good resperator you are probably more safe than using a epoxy finish. The epoxy fumes alone make me sick from the smell.
