In my lifetime I have seen the loss of the last of our veterans from many wars, always a sad thing. A visit to the military cemetary at Port Hudson where my father and many friends are buried hammered home a brutal truth, most of the stones in the newer area are for people who served in Desert Storm and later. Time flies and we will soon lose the last of our vets from World War II. Seems like most are gone from Korea and Nam too, dead far too young. A sobering thing to walk through a military cemetary, everybody should do it sometime.

Thank You to all that served and Thank You to all that are serving!

Hu

I was there yesterday. Laid my Mom to rest joining my Navy submariner Dad at the Riverside, Ca National Cemetary.

Staff had most of the flags in place for today-a powerful scene.

Thanks to our veterans, past and present.

Take care everyone.

Didn't serve but would like to thank everyone and these special people....

My Great Great Uncle, KIA in France during WWI while serving with the 4th Division, 58th Infantry, Company A. Received the Purple Heart.

My Great Uncle, served 3 tours in Vietnam with the "Big Red One" US 1st Infantry Division.

My Grandfather, who served on the U.S.S. Savannah (CL-42) during WWII.

And my Father, who was a MP at Ft. Gordon during Vietnam, but stayed stateside and never went across seas.

Also forgot to mention my cousin J.B., who received his Purple Heart in Italy in 1943. He was lucky to make it back as well.

A few pics...

My Grandfather in Guadalcanal during WWII, my Great Grandfather (on the left holding pistol) during WWI, my Great Great Uncle (standing on the right) who was KIA during WWI, my Great Great Uncle buried in France (before they sent his remains back home to be buried), and the U.S.S. Thank you to all of the men and women who have and are serving in the Armed Forces of our great nation.

My wife asked me to post this UTube link to a song for the Viet Nam Vets today.
Its one of her favorites by George Jones.

I hope that this song isn't inappropriate for Remembrance Day.
Part of the remembering for me is that the Nam Vets didn't get treated very well when they returned
and that is a lesson learned and also should never be forgotten.

This last picture reminded me of the time when we off the coast of Japan in a Navy LST ship practicing beach landings. A typhoon was coming at us pretty hard. While on deck we could see the storm approaching. We could also see a LONG, Merchant Marine vessel already caught in the storm. The bow of the long Merchant marine would sink beneath the waves and two thirds of the ship would become completely submerged. We just new it was going to sink completely as the deck looked like it was well beneath the water level. It would take what seemed like forever, for the ship to raise itself back up out of the waves. We were mezmerized watching the Merchant Marine ship toss and turn. If any of you know what an LST is, then you know we were in for a treat ourselves. I sure would love to have taken a picture of that Merchant Marine ship. They survived from what I know but what would I ever know, I was a USMC grunt on a Navy ship out in the middle of the ocean, sweating out our own debacle.

After quite a few hours of what also seemed like most of our buddies, heaving their guts out, till they were too weak to fight, a few of us that seemed impervious to the rocking and rolling of the ship went down to the mess hall and got a bunch of oranges and went back to where our buddies were laying there, grunting and groaning, now only heaving bits of air and a little saliva. There wasn't much left in them but we taunted them with our oranges, eating them like we were at some mad party, laughing and torturing them as best we could. They would try to grab us and make us stop but they were weak like zombies and we just laughed and pushed them back down on their bunks and laughed some more. I know, I know, it was a bit sadistic but what are you supposed to do when there is so little entertainment on board ship?

I did not serve but am proud of my grandfather who did on the USS Arizona. He was on leave getting married to my grandmother during Pearl Harbor, lucky he was or I would not be here now. RIP to my grandparents. :)

Yesterday was the Marine Corps' Birthday and today is Veterans Day.

I played hard yesterday and last night and had lots of fun. Plan to celebrate Veterans Day in a similar manner.

Special thanks to all of you veterans who are members of this forum and as well as those who will never read these words.

I think it is fair to remind ourselves that today's military personnel are all volunteer. Thank you active military!

Just now I heard president Obama say that he made a promise that our returning warriors would be welcomed when they return to our shores. It is fitting and just. No matter what stinking war the U.S. participates in, I will never blame the military men and women. It is not they who start the wars. It is the elected officials and business people who start the wars.

I have always said that the Senate and the House of Representatives as well as every member of the President's cabinet should be required to send their first born child or their closest relative's first born child to fight on the battlefield of any war or conflict that we participate in.

It doesn't seem that long ago when these photos were taken.

I served in the U.S. Navy on River Patrol Boats in Vietnam from 1969 through 1970. These were the 31 foot fiberglass boats featured in the movie Apocalypse Now. Of course, we didn't act like those sailors because if we had, we would've all been killed pretty quickly. Our casualty rate was high but so was our kill rate.

I offer my thanks and respect to all veterans who have served our nation whether in war or in peace time. As they say in Naval Special Warfare, "It takes a team".
