So I'm watching and noticing that everyone (Sigel, Trudoue, Jones etc) refer to Efren as EfreM.

Now I have always known him as Efren Reyes. Am I wrong or are they just pronouncing his name wrong, if so why? I think it seems rude to do that over and over.

They're all ignorant that's why. Its Efren with an "n".

There's a multitude of them, that have done that, do that, and will continue to do that
Announcers in the booth, are like the National Enquire sometimes.
They just run with it lol

Allen Hopkins is an other one that always called him Efrem, and it drove me crazy listening to him say that. What is so hard about saying his name correctly, "F Ren"? To me that shows a lack of respect for a man who is a legend in the Pool world.

Jealousy, Jay... jealousy.

( shaking my head sadly )

Might be somewhat of a regional accent thing. Most of the north east does odd things. Especially with the letter R. I think I have it figured out though. What you do it you take the R out of all the words you pronounce, especially if they end in R. and you save those and add them to the end of any word that ends with a vowel.

"I drove my ca(r) down to the ma(r)ket and bought some tomators"

"I can't watch the live stream because I don't have a big enough datar plan on my cell phone"

Finally, some damn science to prove a claim.
Hahahahahahah

before there was Efren, there was "Efrem Zimbalist Jr."

Maybe some people think its the same name.... or just got used to using the first one?

Allen called Mosconi Marsconi.
Its a N.J accent thing.
Pizzer Pizza
Sodar soda
Areaer area
Brender Brenda

Brender lives in my areaer and we went out for Pizzer and sodar. Pure N.J. speak. And they make fun of southerners!

I was born and raised in that sewer but never picked up that accent.

Not excusing that frequent mispronunciation, just answering your question as best that I can:

For many Americans and Canadians aged over 40 or so, it was/is more reflexive to see, hear, and pronounce, the word "Efren" as "Ephram" because of the multi-season, hugely popular FBI TV series starring the strangely-named Ephram Zimbalist. In any country, sound-alike first names and even surnames are routinely and erroneously conflated even by highly literate folks, but more so with those of us who for years greatly preferred to spend time working on, and playing the sport we've been addicted to for most of our life, rather than reading as much as other folks, (or otherwise being exposed to the wide variety of ways that names from other cultures can be spelled and correctly pronounced).

Arnaldo -- (Hell, I can't even correctly spell Arnold.)

Not the worst.

The mispronouncing of Efren was not the worst of it. The worst of it was the thrashing Efren gave Mike, a real beat down. Then in spite of the lousy playing Mike still got $100,000.

If I was having a good night I could of played as good as Mike did that night. It was the most lop sided big money match I have ever seen.

It had to have been very embarrassing for a guy that had won so many tournaments against so many great players.

There used to be an actor on a couple popular tv shows named Efrem Zimbalist Jr. The shows were 77 Sunset Strip and The FBI.

I'm guessing that's where those guys got Efrem from although you would expect better from people whose job it is to do commentary. It isn't like football with 20+ players to keep track of.

To me, it was even more ridiculous when Trudeau commentated an IPT final between Reyes, the greatest eight ball player that ever lived bar none, and Sigel, who'd just come out of a fifteen year retirement. Trudeau commentated as if Sigel were the clear favorite with Efren, a worthy aspirant for the title, trying for the upset. It was pretty tough to listen to such nonsense!

You guys seem to be working off of the premise that Sigels match with Reyes (or Loree Jon for that matter) were actual competitive events, and not just a part of the build up for the new tour, being expensed out of the advertising budget.

Did anyone actually think that Loree Jon could beat Mike (even playing as a shell of his former self, Mike), or as Stu mentioned, that a 13-15 year retired Sigel could beat a still competitive Reyes? Ask yourself this, if the losers of those matches had little to no chance, why did they have the matches? Of what benefit would it be to showcase formerly top players past their prime against players they cant beat?

My guess is, that it was $275k out of the advertising budget for the upcoming tour. Pretty much a drop in the bucket when you consider what Trudeau was paying cable companies across the country to shill his bullshit "cures" books.

Did K.T. talk a bunch of shit, and say stupid things that sounded impressive to make the matches seem more like matches? Sure. Thats what any good salesman, carnival barker, con man etc etc etc does to try and make you buy his bullshit.

Mike conned the con man.

No doubt about it.
