wondering if somebody could tell me the best ferrules to have on pool cue shaft. My ferrule cracked and the guy who does my work recomends aegis 2 ferrules? he has other ferrules just wanted to see what other people thought??

There is no best anything. That is why there are options.

I'd go with what you had, or something else, or none.

Just remember that the ferrule is only a collar to prevent shaft splitting over the long haul. If your not a maniac, you don't even need one. Black balled has it right.

Personally I like ivory. I do not care for PVC. LBM isn't bad nor is aegis. Try them all and then you will know what you like.

I have an Aegis II ferrule on an old Meucci that was a replacement for the original and I love(d) it. Don't really play with that cue anymore, but will say that I can vividly remember being able to tell the hit was different, at least to me, than with the original ferrule. At that time, I would have never thought that changing the ferrule could change the hit.

Right now I have for different cues with a toatal of 5 different ferrules on the shafts and I think they all hit just fine. These include Aegis II, Meucci standard, Ivory, and two others that I don't know what they are, but they are some type of composite and each has a different texture/weave to them.

My cue is a custom, and to try something different, I went with deer antler. Has a weird color to it, but hits as solid as any cue I've ever hit.

I like the old micarta turns yellow plays nice is hard to find, I have it on a few shafts and have a couple of blanks left for an upcoming Ed Young.

Micarta was always my favorite. Ivory next, then Aegis. Never tried Juma, but am told by people I respect and trust that Juma is the same feel as ivory, but more durable/stable...don't know. I've never had a problem with any common ferule material, the tip makes the biggest difference in feel, along with stiffness/flex of shaft/taper.

Juma is nowhere near ivory. It's made of polyester, so it's soft.

I have an old cue with 2 shafts, made in the early 70's...the ferrules are developing a pinkish tone...anybody know what material that would be?

Best

What is the best ferrule?

What is the best cue? Best tip? Best cloth, table, aiming system?

Like beauty - the answer is always in the eye of the beholder.

There are many choices on tips, ferrules, cloth, cues, chalk, etc.....

The best is always the one that works best for you - not someone else.

Ivory ferrules are my favorite. What is yours? If you don't know - I believe the best method is to try them all until you find one you like. But be careful. How many different types of ferrules have you tried? Did you try them at the same diamater, with the same tip? If not - how do you know how much of the hit can be attributed to the ferrule?

I have a friend who is an extremely strong player. His favorite ferrule came standard on a very popular production cue. It is made of wrapped paper and resin.

I hate that ferrule. But then again, if I could play his speed... I might love it.

Others love cues with low weight, half length ferrules, or sometimes no ferrule at all. They shoot pretty straight with them too.....

Kinda like asking who is the best girl at the dance.......

Dance with them all until you find the best girl for you.....

A good cuemaker can most probably tell you what you want if you care to tell him what kind of hit/feel you are looking for.
And I would also like to point out that it´s a difference how they put them on, uncapped, capped, threads, slip.....

Best of luck in your chase for the perfect setup:wink:
