What do you consider Cheap?

Not to get too political, but pretty soon we'll be playing each other for bread or a can of beans.
 
Lots of really good paying jobs here...they are hiring 263 people for the VA and they have hired close to 300 in the past 8-9 months.....Great Job for sure.....I hate to hear its so bad in other parts of the country.

I'm trying to read between the lines a lil bit here. I realize that you are on the road with business and don't want to get tied up in a long match. Maybe you are just trying to keep things friendly? I would consider races to 5 for $20 pretty cheap. Nobody is going to file bankruptcy at that price.
If you ever get to Tucson I will play you some cheap sets.
Another thing to consider is setting a time limit before you start playing. Some guys get bent out of shape if you are winning a few and then tell em "oh I have to leave now". JMHO

Both your assessment are accurate. I dont want long match ups; and while I like action, I do like it to be "friendly action". Like everyone who "gets in the mix" I have experienced hard feelings due to money.

I would say that $5 per game 9-Ball or $20 sets 9-Ball are the norm around Sactown, but much bigger coin has been known to change hands from time to time.

IMO THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH RACES TO 5 FOR 20 AND TABLE TIME.

AND WHEN YOUR IN A ROOM YOU DON'T KNOW, ALWAYS REMEMBER "IN GOD WE TRUST, ALL OTHER MUST POST UP"

good question

In my local room the normal is 5 or 7 for 20, though i do know of several guys that enjoy a race to 3 for 5. [myself being one of them.] because it's getting the mind tuned to something being on the line. 1 -5 bucks a game is normal here on a pay per game idea.
I will say this though, this isnt the normal for north alabama, to go an hour the opposite way from my normal room they will talk about sets to 21 for 10g or more. Now whether that's truth or fiction from railbirds I never know.



personally you set the limit, you say what you want, if those short stops don't want to play a race to 5 for 5 then they are playing for the wrong reasons IMO. I play purely for the game and the intricacy it brings in learning at all times. So never let someone dog you for your tastes.

I think the funniest game i ever played was a race to 150 in 14.1 for 5 bucks. Why i did. just to do something.

Just a rambling of an alabama player.

I consider the people that are complaining that the BCAPL is going to charge $5 more per yr for a total of .28 cents per week to play, as being "Cheap".

Sorry for veering off topic but that was the first answer that came to mind when I read the thread title.
 
No such thing as CHEAP pool!

I live in the place where action went to die, so I'd be happy as a lark to have 20/25 set games lined up! Hell, around here lately, makin' a $100 score is a REAL SCORE! LOL If your opponents are woofin' at ya to play for more it's their problem not yours! I hope you don't cave in to their wishes and give them the exact game they want just because you feel obligated.

I used to look down on those that wouldn't play for the kind of money I liked to bet, but now that I've aged a bit more and have found out there isn't a pot of gold at the end of the pool rainbow, I've begun to have a much better time playin' the game I love!

Part of the bonus plan is that I probably make more money now on pool than I ever did in the past and I'm not bettin' high at all. I'm more than satisfied with a $5 9-ball game, 10/20 one pocket, or $20 races to 5!

Anyway, my advice...enjoy the game regardless of what the stakes are and you'll come out a winner no matter what in the end! :thumbup:

Whatever the bet....you make the game YOUR way (bet, spot, etc) then you usually have the edge.

I've seen a guy turn a $5.00 a game bet into a $600 score! I don't think he had $40 on him, LOL.

My most favorite score was when I was about 17 and had only been playing pool (seriously) for about a year and used to play this Vietnamese guy 9 ball for $5.00 a game. Shoot...I might only have $20 or $30 on me in those days being in school and everything. We always broke even...but my game elevated one day and I took him off for $80 at $5.00 a game. I was running out and FELT like a champion.

Of course, I always wanted to play better players and with my boost of confidence I immediately went to play the best player in the room getting the wild 7, 8, and the breaks and lost it all in one set (he made me post it up for one set, LOL), but I did get to 7 in a race to 9!

Sometimes it is good to have a little knot on you in case a good gambling opportunity arises and you need some cake. I always feel like I gamble better (regardless of the bet) if I have a nice roll in my pocket. It just feels good to know you have plenty of ammo. I don't like to gamble if I don't have a little knot in the pot.
 
For me...

Cheap: $1/$2 per game, $5/$10 race to 5
Norm: $5 per game 9-ball or $10 per game 1-pocket, $20 race to 5

The most I've played for is a race to 7 for $100, but only because I was way ahead and the guy wouldn't quit (a dream for some, an annoyance for me).
