I heard he left pool and he is playing poker all time. If it is true is such a shame..

A few years ago at the US Open he was at the pool hall gambling a little bit. He was playing online poker while sitting around and then seemed in a hurry to get back to it while he was playing decent sized sets. It was kind of funny. He is a great player for sure. One of my favorites to watch.

We went on the road together here in the US before he was known...Talk about straight up hi-jacking people!!!Anyone want to try him some scratch pool...

Several Russians have become top poker players and made million dollar plus scores. It looks good to him too. If it was only that easy. Two pool players have made a successful transition to poker. John Hennigan who now plays in the biggest games there are. He's made many millions playing poker. And Nick Schulman who won a tournament that paid over two mil. His end was half was what I heard, still more than a million. He plays all the big events now, and has made other nice scores.

A few other pool players have done all right, but many have failed miserably.

What about McCready? Tang? Pagulayan? Aren't these guys doing pretty good on the other green tables (or the green screen in McCready's case)?

The silly thing about poker wins is that the only thing reported is the amount won, but not the amount of buy-ins and other costs of the tournaments. A professional poker player playing live tournaments can't expect to have exceptionally high return of investment, because the cost of the tournaments is so high. So it's kind of misleading to say someone has so-and-so millions of earnings in poker without reporting the net income.

Also, the variance of tournaments is really high. A very good player can have a long streak of bad luck in tournaments, for months or even years. The likelihood that you win of course increases the better player you are, but winning tournaments requires an incredible amount of luck.

I'm willing to believe that they are good poker players, but being involved in the online poker community for few years now has lead me to understand the mathematics behind these successes and they appear very different to the layman than the reality happens to be. There surely is a significant skill element in poker, but even the absolute best player in the world is nowhere near guaranteed to even cash in a given tournament, let alone win it.

And let's not forget this guy.

Thanks CreeDo. I've pretty much given it up the last couple of years to concentrate on other projects (like my book). I didn't even go to the World Series last year. This year I plan to go and play maybe three or four events.

Didn't Bill Blanda win a couple of poker tournaments?
He used to play pool.

Bill has had some success, but like Jarno said, with expenses and entry fees taken out, he may well be an overall loser.
Just so you know, I'm not winning much from poker tourneys. I have done a lot better in live games. My speciality for years was 15-30 Hold 'em. I had several winning years in a row. Even in that game, it's not hard to win 500-1,000. And then quit! :wave3:

Was Amarillo Slim a pool player?

Yes, and a pretty good one. He was one of the smartest hustlers of his time. Good at pool and poker, and just about anything else he tried. His book is a classic - "Amarillo Slim in a World of Fat People."

Have you heard of James Akenhead. He was a pool player on my tour a couple of years ago.

"Tall Bobby" (Jean-Robert Bellande ) has won a little at poker. He used to own a little pool room in Hollywood and loved to play one pocket. Stalev dropped by Hardtimes not too long ago and messed around on a billiard table. He said he was only playing poker these days.
