What is the best thing you did to improve your game in 2011?

What things that you did to make your game better in 2011? How did they help to make your game better? What areas were the improvements made in your pool game? Breaks, run outs, playing safe, banks, kicks, or other things?
Thanks.

I am listening better

(but not always remembering)to the helpful generous advice of an experienced player in our local room. Particularly re 1P. He plays smart, I just try to pocket balls. Slowly, I am trying to remember and adopt the advice he has offered. He has tried to help me with shots and situational thinking and when to employ both. He has his work cut out for him. I play too aggressively, in general.

Thank you Don.

The best thing

I did for my game was 'win', and understanding what I did wrong when I did not win.

COMPETITION. Tournaments, action, maybe even league. Even when you practice, challenge yourself by competing against the ghost or some other drill that requires you to stay focused at all times. Most people lose mental focus when they play and I believe that is the most essential part of the game.

Completely loose my ego and check my pride at the door. Other than that buying Max Eberle's and Joe Tuckers instructional dvd's have been a big help.

Oh yea, one more thing.....AZ BILLIARDS!

1) Bought a flip HD camera: This allows me to film myself playing. I can see problems with pre-shot routines, stance, etc.

2) Joined a Bar Box 8 ball league: This sounds pedestrian, I know. However, my handicap in league is fairly high. My team counts on me having a high win percentage. Thus, every week I get a least a few games of pool that is a bit more pressure packed. This has sharpened my game. I have now resolved to enter more local tournaments.

Played in a 10-ball ghost league. Handicap is determined by how many balls you are allowed to take off the table. 8 balls to run off is consistently easy for me and 9 balls isn't too far off.

Simple, I spent a day with John Schmidt working on my 14.1 game.

He's a great guy with a ton of knowledge he's willing to share.

In the last week I've rediscovered the beauty of a loose grip & wrist. When I was new to the game, it came naturally. Over time, everything began to tense up.

I now allow my hand to open slightly on the backswing (something the snooker players preach) and then close again on the forward swing. The fingers never leave the cue on the way back...nor clench it on the way forward.

This relaxation of the hand/wrist seems to promote relaxation in the arms muscles as well.

All great stuff guys.

For me, was rededicating myself to playing again after a year plus hiatus. Working with CTE concepts and center ball made a big difference in my aiming, and trying to firm up my preshot routine so it's consistent even under pressure - still working on that one.

Now trying to figure out to really cement and pressure proof that PSR, as well as what type of practice/competition to focus on to improve consistency and keep reducing those stupid mistakes that stop runouts. Not sure whether going back to drills is the right answer, or more focused practice, or more competition. Hope to figure it out soon!!!

Using CTE and paying more attention to my dominant eye.

I started playing and implementing the crap I picked up on azbilliards. I noticed the world got better as I sat on my ass.
