What is the closest an amateur level player has ever come to winning an event at DCC?

This year it was running a chainsaw and a splitting maul cuttin firewood every day for a month leading up to the dcc.

It's good for banks, not so much for 9ball or one pocket tho, haha. John B.

Thanks for the post your truley one of the best posting pro players we've had here in my time , very down to earth ,,

In 2004 (I think), Billy Palmer from the bay area in CA finished 3rd in 1-pocket.

Is Jamie Baraks a professional? He came in 2nd in the 9-ball.[/QUOTE]

He is very much a pro player.....AKA Jamie Wilson.

Hey, what can I say, even a stopped clock is right twice a day. That was a perfect example of an amateur playing out of his mind, coupled with the better player performing down to the level of his competition. ;)

An amateur is capable of beating a pro, and that does not mean that the pro has to play down to the amateurs level. I remember the guy that won the APA singles nationals in 9 ball back in 2002 (when I was there). He was really an awesome player, and completely ran over the guy who got 2nd. I wish I knew the players name, but I think he said that he was from WI maybe. I remember hearing that he won it the previous year too. Anyways, he said that he beat Johnny Archer in a tournament once. He said that he beat him 9 to 1. I think that he said he broke and ran like a 7 or 8 pack on Johnny to win (but this was hearsay, from another player). So, my point is that amateurs can beat pro level players at times, and it probably happens a lot more then you think.

Yea. Amateurs can beat pros sometimes but it is not common. That why pros are pro and amateurs are not pros ;)
To win derby one amateur should win multiple pros and many of those would probably be World Champs.. It would be Cinderella story if someone does it..

John...congratulations on the win....again.

Looks like that workout had you in good shape for a long DCC schedule.

You like wormin' bass fishing better for getting ready for one pocket?

take care

I beat Mike Davis before...... in a tournament . ....... one game actually. I won the flip, broke and ran out. Broke the next game, made a ball and was forced to play safe. I played a pretty darn good lock down safe. Mike kicked two rails, made it, and that was the end of the set --- literally . Very nice guy and very professional and boy can he play!!!

Really comes down to how good of amateur we are talking about.
There are a lot of really good shortstops that aren't PRO's that are very capable of beating the top guys in a short set on occasions. So, the right draw and having a stellar set here or there could bring an amateur up close to the top.

I'm just an OK player and in the 2008 Derby City 9ball I beat Niels Feijen in something like the 7th or 8th round. Niels was the defending Champ for 2007.
In a race to 7 anything is possible. But, Beating one champ after the next is highly doubtful.
Best,
Ken

All the various break rules seem to come with their own limitations. I noticed the last Mosconi Cup simply did away with them altogether.

put the 9 on the spot alternate break, break box and amateurs will enjoy and do a lot better at events like DCC.

Doubtful, because one of the things that helps lead to upsets is the possibility that the weaker player can get control of the table and keep it. The dynamic of 9-ball is that you're supposed to walk on eggshells the entire match knowing that one mistake could blow the whole thing for you. For sure the pros are supposed to more explosive than the amateurs, but there are plenty of very explosive players in the amateur ranks too, and to deny them the chance to do their thing makes the whole thing less attractive.

Plus alternate break and the break box is a massive snoozefest for the spectators.

Besides, I think they had close to 400 entries in the 9-ball this year. It hardly seems like it's struggling for participation.

His kid Tommy demolished Earl in the 9ball a couple years later in the early rounds. (No, he didn't win the whole thing, but figured to throw that in since it was an amateur crushing a champion)

The same year if my memory is right he not only beat earl, he beat archer, buddy hall, and Jeremy jones...

Amateur winners

i think the amateur singles player you speak of is probably Brian Parks he's won it a few times and plays pro speed. Young player from my area beat Dee, then Alex P and Shane McMinn in one pocket then drew Corey in 9 ball and beat him also, in the same day no less. He got forfeited by a slow train or could've had a buyback. Heard a lot of people got forfeited by that damn train at the derby this year. We've all played in those tourney hoping that top player gets taken out if we are still on the west side !!!

From the guy who has my favorite straight pool run....
So how would you like to give up the table after you run a rack at that game.

The game at the highest level should be elitist.
That's where champions come from....
....they already got events where everybody wins a prize.
