What is the greatest compliment someone has given you?

My favorite off hand compliment came from a scuffler, not a great player by any means but someone who scuffled his whole life making a dollar here and a dollar there. I overheard him talking to someone else about me. After watching me win a tough match, he told one of his peers, "You see that guy there, I've watched him play for 20 years and he has WILLED himself to play at the level he plays". :p

JoeyA (should have been named Will :D)

It happened last night. One of the leagues that I play on is a heads up bar league. I played in the last set and our team ended up winning 12 to 0. We we playing against a bunch of young gun ball bangers. When it was all over one of the players came up to our table and made a few remarks congratulatory remarks and then said players like us should be barred from the league and then tapping me on the shoulder said and guys that are hustlers like this one and that guy shouldn't even be wasting their time in a league. I thought it was funny as I am probably the weakest link on our team and the other guy is one of the strongest player around.

Two come to mind. My buddy and I are playing a game of 9-ball and I get hooked pretty severely. I jack up to make a very difficult masse, needing to curve the ball about 90 degrees in half the width of the table, and strike the object ball 6 ft away. I miscue badly at the same time that one of the newer waitresses walks by the table. She sees that I was stroking in a direction nowhere near a ball, and says, "What the hell was that!". I grabbed the cueball again and said, "I was trying to do this" to show her what a masse was, not expecting anything but the cueball curving to happen. I set for the shot in about 2 seconds, and fired the object ball in!" She said, "NOW I'm impressed"

Second compliment. A local player who is even with me as a shooter, except that he has a weak break is talking to someone and they mention that we should play each other. He states that he would play me even if I would break for him. The other guy says, "Are you crazy, he could just not break well and screw you. He replied, "He wouldn't do that. He doesn't have it in him to cheat like that."

The first time one of the local top gamblers asked me for the seven. He needed it too :D

Playing in Chicago at one of Edyie's tourneys, I got actual applause from a guy at the next table. He's one of the top players up there (why can't I remember names?), I was really proud.

Jude,

That would be the best compliment ever but it was from one of our posters here on AZ...I was playing him in a tournament and he was staring at me the whole time...couldn't keep his eyes off me....and then says "you look like Brad Pitt"...but he said it in a old Swahili dialect, and I am rusty with my old Swahili dialects, but I said back to him "thank you"..so I thought... .but since I speak broken Swahili....turns out I said "Your momma said the same thing last night"...anyways a fight ensued, he got his own blood on brand new cloth and then I proceeded to run a 5 pack and out on him...

Worldison2, sorry about the broken nose....

tough call

One of the biggest compliments playing pool, a well known road player tried to talk me into going on the road with him and left his number and an open invitation when I told him I had local business to attend. Also a whole pool hall clamoring to know who I was in the days before the net. Somebody once paid me a very nice compliment after scouting me for three nights but I have to admit I didn't care for that one when I was flying under the radar.

I guess the very best compliment was the one I heard dozens of times, "you are either the best or luckiest player I have ever seen." Taking the cheese and having folks still ready to play you next time was the real test of a gambler's skill.

After one of our local open tournies, I matched up with a guy that I didnt know and was giving him the 8 based on what I saw in the tourney. We raced to 9 for $200 and he jumped out to a 6-1 lead on me. I kinda had the thought that I had made a bad game, but what could I do...I fought as hard as I could and ended up going hill hill with the guy. Immediately when I won the game to put me on the hill, I asked the guy if he wanted to back it up and double it....he said "sure". I won the second set 9-4. One of the locals that was watching came up to me afterwards and said, "son, you got more heart than anyone I have ever seen." Made me feel good.

Sorry, I left out the quote that this was in response to, so this probably lost all it's luster at this point.

I'm having a bad day!

Steve Lipsky said "I can't spot you 180 balls if you are going to shoot 5x better than me" after we played a couple of seasons ago in our weekly league and I won with a score of around 80-81 (he needed to go to 275)! Granted he was tired and not shooting well that day and I was having one of those days when nothing goes wrong. Still it was fun to hear from someone that is LEAPS and BOUNDS a better straight pool player than myself.

Applause by railbirds a couple of times during matches. I consider applause to be the greatest compliment.

was playing Scotty Townsend in a tournament (we drew each other 1st round) and i was thinking "great, i draw a champion first", and he also mumbled out loud "why cant i ever get an easy draw 1st round"... made me feel good that he didnt think of me as an easy win... it of course went hill hill and he breaks and runs on the hill for the cheese... but it still made me feel 10 feet tall when i heard him say that.

also heard John Schmidt say i "played pretty good and that im not someone to fool with" when someone i was trying to match up with asked him for a line.

I agree. It's only happened twice with me. One time it was hill/hill in a tournament (and winning got me in the money) and I made an amazingly difficult draw shot (I was nearly frozen on the rail) to get perfect on the nine. One rail bird said "that was strong!" I don't play that well, so those few times stick in your mind and are treasured!

Over the years I have been the fortunate recipient of numerous compliments. Not due to my stellar play, simply because I believe what goes around comes around and I enjoy commenting to other players when I feel they deserve it.

Most recently I have adopted a new phase that accompanies me thanks to Snorks ;) "Not Right". I enjoy hitting shots now that elicite that comment. Makes me laugh. :D

I think the best compliment I've ever received was from an old time three cushion player that passed away years ago. He said I had an "educated stroke" and I thought wow that's nice and coming from someone I had a great deal of respect and admiration for made it even better. Philw

I was playing Glenn Atwell at the last Reno bar table tournament and had a 6-2 lead. He calls his time out and goes to smoke and regroup. My buddy was out there smoking too and told me that Glenn was asking everyone who I was......I took that as a compliment:) I went on to win 9-4, one of my best wins ever. Glenn is a really nice guy.
