What State Has Produced the Most High Caliber Players?

IL - Ike Runnels, Justin Bergman, Marco Marquez, Santos Sambajon, James Baraks, Jesse Bowman, Jamie Baraks

Me thinks you might have stuttered a little on Mr. Baraks, although 2 of him would be better than one.........:)

Louisiana

Louisiana has produced one hell of a crop of top players.

Let's see, there's........................ well, give me a minute..............................ahhh gee, just a few more seconds, there's got to be a few of them, awwww man; ughhhh, this is awful. I must just be having a memory lapse. It'll come to me. Ease up, don't try so hard. Dang, there's got to be ONE.

Surely we have one....... OH, THANK GOD, Scotty Townsend. :D

WHEW! For a minute, I thought Louisiana was all washed up. (And I almost forgot about Katrina just for a minute)

-Negative ghostrider...Tony Ellin was from Miami, Fl. Moved to Georgia, then the Carolinas...which makes him a Floriganian

-Not so fast, Voodoo, my friend. Tony Ellin was from Charleston, SC. He was here quite a bit when him and Johnny were tight and Johnny married a girl from here (twice). He told me so, anyway. But, knowing Tony, you might have to check the birth certificate.

Lemme straighten you GURU's out...:o

Tony Ellin is from...New Jersey.

Eric >TK from FLA was too

I judo-bow to Eric...

Tony's family DID moved to FL from NJ in the Mid 70's. I went to school with him and his sister Nancy.

Voodoo~~~forgets NJ but thats not hard to do :p

I give you the King's bow.......................................

Maybe Tony told me he was LIVING in Charleston. I know Shelby and he had a place there. Tragic tale.

You also have Loree Jon, Tom Ruocco, Little "Miami" Gonzales resided in Paterson for a while, I don't know how long you need to be a resident to be on the list lol, there is a list of A+ players that you won't know, Sam Guzman, Paterson George, both RIP, Teddy Garrahan, Mary Kenniston, Ed Hodan, Pat Fleming, on and on..

JV

Joe, I was only listing the stone cold champions. :p

Teddy G and Mary Kenn moved to Vegas.

There are a LOT of shortstops/ball under top player types around here:

Ken da farmer, Mike Sica, Dennis Spears, Steve Lillis, Joey Kong, Joey Testa, CArlos Santos, Carm Lombardo...

P.S.- the guy that posted that Miz was from somewhere else?! Miz was from Jersey

Eric >thought everyone knew Miz was from Joysee

I once saw Dennis Spears make Earl quit in the middle of a match. He can downright play. He IS NOT a ball under the top guys in my black book.

Not that I keep a black book.

You got it about right, altho that match was with an Earl that was a few balls below Earl's top speed.

Dennis does actually need a ball from the top guys, like Hopkins.

Are you kidding me

The way I heard it, from a reliable source -- :grin-square: -- the East Coast couldn't beat the West Coast, especially the player(s) from California. So they changed the rules from two-shot/push-out to what they are today, turning pool into a luck game, so they could start booking a few winners. :o

Before then, again, according to my source, the California player(s) gave the world the 8. :nanner:

JAM, YOUR SOURCE SHOULD WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE.;););):p:p

CJ WILEY is from Missouri. Remember, the title of this thread is which state has PRODUCED the most high caliber players - not where they live now.

And Jamie Baraks is a great player, but I don't think it is fair if you put him on your list for Illinois twice.

I would add Balukis to the NY list as she could play with the men.

this would never go down but i would take .
duel putnam steve mchnach not sure how to spell it and me.
play a 4 man team tour with any state.

Joe Balsis was from NE Pennsylvania

Is this an all-time list? Then I'd have top go with New York, we haven't produced much in recent times but there's a great past here. There's Mike Sigel, Irving Crane, Babe Cranfield, Cisero Murphy, Joe Balsis, Gene Nagy, Johnny Ervolino, Michael Eufemia, Jeanette Lee, George "Ginky" SanSouci, Tony Robles, George Mikula...I'm sure I'm forgetting a couple here.

There's 6 world champions on that list, and all except two have won major events. There are also 8 players on the list with high runs in 14.1 of over 300 balls (two of them over 400 balls).

P.S. I forgot Dennis Hatch!

P.P.S. Johnny Irish Lineen - although I'm not sure if he was actually raised in New York.

However, he's rather be drinking from this mug!

You know, I have one of these mugs in my basement. It's not pink, though. Mine is white. I wonder if they're worth anything!

Stick it on ebay. It might sell for a fortune, especially if you say it belonged to Grady Seasons. :D

Don't forget Dan DiLiberto of Buffalo, who won the Stardust straight pool event in 1972. Two other lesser-known but very strong straight poolers from New York were Pete Margo of Staten Island and Ernie Costa of Brooklyn. And, of course, Brooklyn gave us the great Jean Balukas. Queens has brought us bot Fran Crimi and Dan Barouty.

...... and, finally, Pat Howey of Rochester, whose loss we presently mourn.
