What's the best way to mark a table for drills?

...especially if I'm at my local pool hall?

I've heard of using the notebook hole reinforcers, but I'm worried that the owner might not like that, or worse yet, leaves adhesive on the cloth.

Lately I've been using chalkboard chalk, but even that can be a b-tch to brush off. A hundred faint dashes later, and I just feel like a mook.

Any thoughts?? Next, I'm gonna try the "mini" sidewalk chalk, as it's a finer texture. I'll let you know how it all goes.

When I took lessons from Thorston, he would uyse a white grease pencil like they use at the cleaners, but again it stays on the table for a while:cool:

you can get those little post-it note bookmark tabs. they work great and don't leave any adhesive.

I've used the reinforcement holes quite a bit and I have had no issues with leaving adhesive to my knowledge.

I'd ask first.

I second that!!!! A transgendered friend of mine who is reading this right now turned me on to the hole reinforcements

Ive used the reinforcers, and left them on the table for a LONG time, took them off with no troubles.

Ask the owner first and show them to him and he shouldnt mind. Heck most room owners should be happy if someone wants to do that. It means they are serious about practicing and will be a customer for years to come :)

Is that a joke? coy euphemism? Thanks for the replies, but at the risk of veering off topic, I don't understand the "transgendered" friend remark.

Call me a crazy liberal, but why not just a "my" friend description. I have transgender friends, but I think they just like to be called "my" friends.

Keep the advice comin guys! I'm off to work.

The reinforcers work well but if they wont let u have em I've just taken a square of chalk and turned it upside down and gave it a tiny twist. A used piece will leave four tiny dots that let you see your mark and brushes off. Most people leave as much or more chalk behind just from the follow through of the stroke.

I use the donut reinforcements, but I stick 2 of them together, then you don't have to worry about the adhesive and it's easy to move them wherever you want.

This is what I've seen Jerry Brieseth do:

Step 1. Find a well used cube of chalk, the kind that has a deep hole in it due to "screw the cue" style of chalking.

Step 2. Place object ball where you like it.

Step 3. Tap the ball. It's okay. Everyone taps balls.

Step 4. Use that cube of chalk to mark where the ball should go by placing it on top of that tapped area (chalk down) and spinning the chalk. The cube should leave a visible circle for you to find the tapped spot again.

The chalk marks and tapped spot are temporary. (note: I see someone already suggested the chalk cube)

I'm a big fan of notebook reinforcement holes, and I've been using donuts for the last 6 months. I've never seen them leave behind any sort of residue, unlike chalk markings I can peel off the donuts after I'm done and it will be ready for the next group of players.

The ball always centers itself in the hole of the donut, so that allows me to set up shots with pinpoint consistency.

One of my favorite drills is the long straight in shot. Using the donuts, I discovered that on stop shots I'm throwing in inside english (cue ball stops but spins clockwise). Something I wouldn't picked up if I my stroke wasn't consistent. Knowing the shot was precisely lined up I have the confidence to check my stance and stroke by closing my eyes when I make my shot. I usually get it in nearly half the time.

I played last night on my "home" table. Some jackwad had taken regular (Masters) chalk, turned it upside down, grinded it into the cloth, and marked 3 different places with the big blue "O", all near the racking area. I brushed some of it off, but it was still prominent. It really requires cleaning to remove it.

I'd like to take that chalk and shove it so far up that inconsiderate person's nostril it blocks his dominant eye. "See the spot now sport?"

Moral of the story - don't leave a table marked up. Hit the Easy button and go to Staples. Please.

Third!

I agree...I use the hole reinforcements ALL the time, and they have never left any residue on the cloth.

I use reinforcements and a laser level to line up my spots for my mother drills all the time. Even at the pool hall.
