What's the difference between "casual players" and "bangers"?

Is there any? Where would you draw the line? If you think there is a difference, please describe it. Note that by "casual players" I generally meant people who play for fun and don't study pool in depth. Both groups can participate in leagues and smaller tournaments.

Bangers think they can... Casual players know they can't.

I like your comment. I feel that the casual player probably understands his place in the pecking order also. I don't think the banger quite understand the concept of actually 'playing' the game.

To me, bangers are people that hit every shot at least pretty hard. They really have no concept of playing position but have a better stick than a casual player.

A casual player will hot shots at varying speeds but typically are inconsistent with aim and their stroke.

I've never really considered the terms to be different...both terms describe the same player where I come from.

Ball bangers can sometimes make a ball, Casual players can sometimes hit a Rail.

Good Luck out there...

I was not aware there was any difference. It is like asking what the difference is between Push&Pool and an internet TROLL. No difference there either.

Casual players usually don't take the game serious and that is fine. In my way of thinking a Banger is a guy who takes the game a little more serious but lacks the skills. They often don't seem to know it though and have an excuse for everything. Kind of a derogatory term. They can also tend to be annoying with no respect for other players around them.

This^, and remembering that P&P is probably not who/what he would like you to think he is.

Well, I was personally thinking bangers are more experienced, a little more skilled and better tacticians. They play more often and use unconventional style and tricks to compensate for general lack of skill and knowledge. They take the game seriously, almost like a hobby, but in their own way. Lacking fear and respect, they have guts to play any shot or challenge pretty much any player, and always with an ambition to win. They also have a better understanding of game mechanics and percentage play comparing to casuals, and are usually more cunning and adapt faster to new conditions. Some are actually good shotmakers, but almost always their position play is minimal to non-existing. Some can also play decent safeties, but they generally play nearly any shot offensively, hitting the CB hard to increase chances of slop at the same time.

How right am I?

I give up. All this time I was trying to mislead you into believing I was a human, but the truth is that I'm a llama from Alpha Centauri, and I came here to destroy life on Earth by trolling.

Casual players "have somewhat of a CLUE!".

Bar bangers are the guys you see spilling beers all over the table and banging sticks around and being obnoxious.

There is a DIFFERENCE IMHO!

This is, without a doubt, one of the saddest and most ridiculous things I've ever read about pool.

"Casual player" is the term someone uses when they want to describe a banger,
but without sounding rude. Banger has the connotation also of someone who hits balls a little
desperately and try to win by ramming them. Whereas casual player has the connotation of someone
who is not that invested in the game and probably doesn't care about winning.

Casual players know they can't play worth a lick and aren't out to prove something.

Bangers think they're bar stars and are universally detested by all.

here it is

Father Internet (the "modern era" Partner to Mother Nature ) tells us:

Casual Player: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=casual%20player
Banger: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Banger&defid=4056601

One may say that (by definition):
Every Banger is a Casual Player; however, not every Casual Player is a Banger

On a side note: it is interesting (and mysterious) how languages work  :
From a more reputable dictionary:
http://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/banger
banger: a sausage (i.e. bangers and mash)

So, here we have a banger as an opposite to a steak :D

Anybody sees how significantly it is pool related ??? ;)

I have played with a lot of bangers over the years. Bangers practice and play a lot. Way more than many serious players in fact. Pool is their only real hobby and they fancy themselves to be pretty good an it. But they never do anything to improve. They never take an honest assessment of where they stand in the hierarchy of pool or why they stand there. They have a lot of bad habits and have no interest in identifying or changing them. They do the same stupid things over and over again. They do however talk one hell of a game. They have played a lot of name players and make sure to tell you all about it. Beat a lot of them too. They know all the pool terms. They obsess over their equipment and the playing conditions so they can always fall back on that as the cause of their failures as they refuse to own their performance. They used to be a lot better than they are now but because of ________ they aren't there anymore but will be soon. In short they are pathetic but what the hell, leagues need them to exist.

Casual players have about the same skill set but a much different attitude.

casual player - someone who doesnt play often and is not very good
banger - someone who plays much more often and is not very good

"bangers," is this the same as "short stops"?

I've not heard the expression "bangers," is this the same as "short stops"? :)
