Some times after a day or two of reading posts on AZ I feel whats the use of even posting about how we all could make pool better. Everyone seems to be pulling in the oppisite direction. Someone comes up with a new idea, a new game that could help pool, or someone trying to get tours and players to work together. It's been the same for years in pool. Most say horray for me F*** you, and what's in it for me, or after me you come first. Johnnyt

Define "make pool better".

Define "make pool better".

Define make pool better=A recognized sport. A National organization. Major TV coverage. Pro players on cereal boxes. Pro pool players making a decent living. Regional teams that sections of the country could identify with and cheer on their team and it’s players. That would be a start. Johnnyt

Unfortunately, when the game had a chance to take off, after The Color of Money, was released, the people running the show were all in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The only key they could sing in was,me,me,me,me.

I was in a room tonight, full of players. I had brought several copies of my book with me hoping to maybe, sell a few. I ran into an old friend and sold one. Then I sat down and had dinner. The cook was also looking at my book, but didn't buy one. I left the copy he was looking at on the counter. The house man came over and told me, "I would appreciate it if you didn't come in here peddling your book. I let you do it once but I don't want you in here selling it anymore." I put the book in my briefcase and agreed to his terms. I finished eating and walked over to talk to some of my friends. I left the room shortly there after.

What does this have to do with this post?

I was in a poolroom trying to sell something connected to the game of pool and I was told to stop what I was doing. The person that owns the room and I have never got along. He's one of the boys in the choir. I thought we had put our differences aside. He was sick in the hospital and I sent him a free copy of my book. If my book ever caught on and sold a ton of copies the game and this room owner might benefit from a possible movie.

It's the short sited people this game has always attracted that has kept it from going anywhere. Most of them live day to day.

I'm involved in a huge endeavor right now. I'm putting together a second sight for the New England Pool and Billiard Hall of Fame. I'm trying to do my part. Make the public aware of all the great pool and billiard players, New England has produced.

We can't get discouraged. We need to get organized and get rid of the choir boys.

I am in my 60's. My dad survived the depression. His father died in 1917 during the flu epidemic when he was 4. He had to drop out of school after the 8 th grade to help support the family that consisted of 6 children. He wasn't the smartest person and had to work hard for everything he had which wasn't much. He was like Ralph Kramden of the "Honeymooners" I would watch a sporting event and cheer for the home team. He would always tell me "If they win or lose it don't put any money in my pocket." Someone would tell him thanks and he would say "I have a whole basement full of thanks."

I use to think what a attitude. I have always helped people and charities and he would tell me that I am foolish because no one will ever return the favor, they will just demand and expect more.

Now after all these years I think that he was right. The world really hasn't changed that much and everyone still has that me attitude. If you really analyze the real motive behind what people do it is because it is benefiting them. There are no "free lunches". It is just the way it is.

But I still try to make a difference because it benefits me. I feel good about having the opportunity and good fortune of being able to help.

Change happens slowly but things do change. I know pool must not be doing great right now in this country but for some it ain't so bad. I am happy to have what I have. I have a lust for the game and got it before I was 6. I have a nice table and more cues (mostly junk) then I need, I have friends that I love to play and skill enough to beat nearly all of them. I know much of the history of the game and have a small collection of billiard related goodies. Joining this forum and getting to read posts like the ones that you guys are putting up has been almost as fun as playing the game itself. I have met a few AZ'ers and occasionally get acknowledged buy some of the great ones on this site. I even get out now and then to a real pool hall and pretend for a few hours that I belong. I guess that I don't expect to much from this game and it seems to be improving, at least in my world. I hope that it will get better for everyone eventually and I believe it will ......slowly. Don't give up on the game it is just a little under the weather but it will never die.

Pool will make a resurgence, it always does. We may not see how right now, but I have the feeling it will come from the net in some way.

I was lucky enough to start playing again right when COM came out and it was a great time to be an upncomin player. I hope all the younger players will get the chance to feel what it's like to around the game when it is a big thing.....not just an oddity, or bar pass time.

As for life, people, charity, or the general way I look at things?.....like my wife sais...I'm too nice, and WAY to trusting, but thats the way I like it.

Just like that is Arizona, most of the Room, Bar, and Sports Bar OWNERS never work in a single direction, it is KILL or Be KILLED.

A year ago this was published on another Forum, it say a lot of how one Bar Owner tried to control many pool thing in AZ.

I know --- in my travels in the past couple of years I was in phoenix and i think you are or whoever wrote the story is missing some points. most if not all the bar owners did not like ron the reasons were simple, he tried to monopolize pool tournaments he even went and had tournaments copywritten so no one else could use a Arizona state title for their tournament. eventhough it wasn't a state title it was a bar room title. they had some good draws for a bar room but not for a state championship of any caliber. he also played politics and stepped on other bars tournaments, same dates now don't get me wrong, I'm not happy that he went out of business but lets call it what it was ron had some business practices that did not make other people happy. he did not make people feel warm and fuzzy when they came in or when they left. I was in --- many times and played in many tournaments IMHO

Only read your post, haven't gone through the rest yet, but traditionally, the players themselves have been the ones who have shot themselves in the foot time after time. Same thing happens here. The infighting and the bickering never seen to stop and AZ is a lot like that, lately.

Honestly if the Room, Bar, and sports Bar OWNER started working in a Single direction maybe other would follow. We have a Pool, and Dart Newspaper Publishers in Az who has tried several tome to call people to one place for a "DIRECTION" Meeting. so hopefully people will start working in a single direction, his paper IMHO are not the greatest, but he has tried, and tried again, but no one show I understand.

He has written many editorial about the subjects of one direction, to date his writing are falling on DEAF EARS. Think the problem is many people on see the MONEY INVILVED, and think work together will hurt THEIR personal bottom line.

Money always makes strange bedfellows.

Wow. GOod stuff.

I agree, keep it in perspective. It is a friggin game, a diversion to the extreme majority of folks who play.

On AZB, we all enjoy pool. The 'make pool better' song is heard by a captive audience: the choir, as it were. Of course it is going to feel like that horse has a chance (see paragraph #2 for further).
