There's something to be said about doing something, sometimes even against great odds, that can be inspired by someone else. Strength can be drawn from a simple rub on the back in a way that let's you know I'm here, or even as simple as a look from a person you can draw strength from at the moment you need it....and that person is there to draw confidence from. If this young lady is Shane's rock to draw that strength from, to calm his nerves when he needs to bear down and stay focused, then I'm truly happy for Shane, he's a great, we'll mannered young man, and very respectful to boot. It's clear to me that Sierra wasn't a distraction to Shane....but rather his secret power!
Motivation is extremely important in life.
Here are a couple of formulas to consider.
What equals the amount of motivation? This is not exact but basically it is...
Your Motivation = Your positive outcome expectation x The value you see in doing it
In other words if you want to do something and on a scale of 0-10 you rate a 7 on your positive outcome belief (it's possible) and a 3 on the value you see in it (your desire) then your motivation level = 21 (not too motivated)
What if you had a cut shot in pool and you need stop shot position? Are you going to be motivated to shoot it? No because expectation is 0 x value of 10 = 0 motivation. You with me so far?
Now let's talk about effort because the effort you give is directly related to your motivation. In talking about effort let's focus on the task of winning the U.S. Open.
I said earlier that motivation is important. It is important because effort is important. Effort is important because when it comes to a task like winning the US open Effort counts twice. The formula goes like this.
Talent x effort = skill
And
Skill x effort = performance
Let's look at skill development first. A guy like Shane has talent and he has strong motivation to put in the effort of lots of quality and focused practice.
Shane's breakdown for skill development: talent (10) x belief (10) x desire (10) = top notch skill development
Now for part 2
Remember performance = skill x effort? Well his skill is a 10 and at first glance his effort in the performance area would seem to be a 10 too but I'm about to explain the most important message in all of this post. Not all motivation and effort are equal.
Remember motivation = expectation x value? A KEY FACTOR THAT MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE IS DEPENDANT ON THE VALUE. Is that value pure or is it tainted? What I mean is is it intrinsic or extrinsic? It makes a world of difference. Shane has plenty of intrinsic value in playing pool. He can practice for days, weeks, months, and years simply for the love of the game and self actualization. In a competition, when one can draw upon that instrinsic value then the motivation is pure and the effort given is strong. When coupled with strong skill like Shane has then the performance is on point.
What about a poor performance? It could be from poor effort. What created poor effort when the guy believed in himself and he really wanted to win? Lot's of times I t comes back to the value. Extrinsic motivation. If your desire to win comes from a need to collect titles, or be recognized for achievements, or basically when it comes down to it win the approval of others then your motivation is corrupt. This corrupt motivation can lead you to put in the hours to practice and develop the skill but when it comes to performance the corrupt motivation leads to things like trying too hard and choking etc. What it leads to is poor effort. So the equation looks like this. Skill 10 x Effort 7 equals 70. Remember the effort, on the surface, feels like a 10 because you are trying to win so hard but when it comes to performance effort is not about quantity but quality. That "zone state" of optimal effort is paradoxically effortless.
Shane, as I said before has tremendous intrinsic value in pool. He is also human and as all of us he at times let's the extrinsic value get the best of him. When pool is your life that is understandable. He has said things before about moving on from pool. That's not necessary imo. Just a little more balance in life is all that is needed and maybe this girl is perfect for that.
