I woke up to a disappointed 8 ball jihadist when he found out we were going to play take what you make in the eight ball set on Corey's recommendation. It makes absolutely no difference to me and I see the argument for playing both ways.

So I will let this poll decide. It will run for 24 hours.

Do we play take what you make or open after the break ?
 
Pros should play by professional rules.

Table open after the break. Just my point zero two - but I'm watching either way.
 
I know some people will argue that since it's a pro event they should have to make what they sink on the break because it's harder.

However, I totally disagree with any rule set that punishes the breaker for being successful.

Sounds like a good match though.

Problem is though, that it only makes it harder for the guy who breaks but potentially makes it easier for the the guy sitting in the chair.

I'd rather see alternate break to even things out than see them play by bar banger rules.

Corey will probably have a pattern racking solution to increase his chances with the first option :eek:

I voted play by official rules, open table.
 
I'm sorry you got the best players in the world here in the TAR arena. They should be calling the rails, kisses, caroms, and taking what they make on the break. As tough as possible.

One hole normal.

Ten ball, no slop but no option unless an illegally pocketed ball.

Well, I certainly hope the possibility of slop is not even up for consideration.

"Take what you make" is tougher.

8 ball on a 9 ft table is too easy for top players. If the table is open after a ball falls on the break, then I'm betting on the player that has the first break of the set.

Then the better solution is to play alternate break than to insert luck into the proceedings, imho.

PS: I am buying the match regardless of how people vote, any 8-ball is better then no 8-ball. But the TAR table is tough, I think it might surprise Corey some how hard some situations are to navigate. I also think making it a chippy game where you need to take what you make favours Corey and his imagination over John's solid by the book technical game to a huge extent, and that is not great when Corey was already a favorite for the weekend on most people's lines. In normal 8-ball I think this match is a toss-up, in take what you make Corey becomes a pretty solid favorite.
 
Voted. Open after break is the way to play anywhere and that track should provide enough difficulty without introducing an additional luck factor into the opening break shot. My $0.03.

I assume that it didn't matter to John, else we wouldn't be having this discussion.

That seems to be the polling that matters.
 
Open after the break. Why punish a player for making a ball on the break by making him shoot at that set? The beauty of 8 ball to me is the ability to evaluate the table and pick the set you feel more comfortable with. Solids or stripes? That is the question, and it should be like that for the pros too.
 
Take what you make is how the APA does it, and they very carefully craft their rules to favor amateurs and give them a little more room for luck. We want as little luck as possible in this set, it's already kind of a short set for players of their caliber.

It sounds like John was not too sure about the thing but simply went with it when asked.
