Which table do pros prefer?

Pool hall

It's too bad that Kim Steel never got a foot hold in the US. I love mine. My only caveat is that it is not the tight pocket version (you could order it in three pocket sizes, I'm told).

I saw a pool hall somewhere, I think maybe on the East coast where the whole pool hall was Kim Steel tables. The had been "rode hard and put away wet" (heavlily used and not taken care of) and they looked terrible. I dont think they handle abuse well.

Those old GC and Diamonds look better used.

Glen Atwell, who I would consider "pro" once told me he prefers Brunswick over Diamond. Not that he can't play well on either...

Yes when Atwell played on 7' Diamonds for the first time in a BCA amateur tournament:first regionals and then 8b nationals;he was very frustrated and did not play well.I think he plays on Diamond tables on a regular basis now and is playing some great pool on them.Maybe his opinion of Diamonds has changed in the last few years?

7' Diamond tables are like tonka toys! How can you not play well on them? They roll well and the pockets accept balls, if you can play at all, you should runout like rainwater on them!

It is my opinion that Diamonds are doing better among the real players nowadays not because of marketing, but just because they are a better table to play on. They reward good play. They punish inaccurate play. Barring the tables that had the wrong rubber on them in the beginning, Diamonds play with a rather remarkable consistency, from what I have seen. I would not say that has been the case with Gold Crowns I have played on.

I would guess that the number one table among pros would be the Gold Crown with the Diamond Pro as an extremely close second. I would also venture to guess that brand recognition would have a lot to do with that. With that said, in the pool world Diamond's name is just as big as Brunswick....maybe. Gotta give Diamond credit for winning the sponsorship for a lot the tournaments......I'm assuming that's how they decide which tables to use. Bob?

all the pix ive seen from the phillipines have been of brunswick metros.
The World pool championsips, the world cup of pool, and the mosconi cup were all played on brunswick metros tournament editions also.

7' Diamonds are very easy to play on.They play worlds different then a 7' Valley and the people with no time on Diamonds were having a real tough time,even Glen was not running racks!

I don't know about the folks who play exclusively on 9' tables but I think it must take some adjusting before they can run out as easily on a Diamond when not used to them.

It only takes ordering about 200 sets to get them at that price, so how many sets would you like again? Manufactures import price and retail is always different...LOL Retail is $275.00 a set

I think I'd check on who told you that, as Diamond has never...never built, nor offered to build a 10ft table, and I do believe Mark would know that beyond any shadow of a doubt, so I think it's highly unlikely that Mark would have made such a quote

sorry, not Mark Griffin, but Greg Sullivan who informed me Diamond could make a 10 ft, but then again he's also the guy
who thought he was gonna sell tables in volume to the NAACP

I don't know about the pros but between the price difference and the hight difference I chose a Diamond pro. I could not be happier. The materials used in a Diamond age better and are gentler on equipment. This is my opinion after studying both tables for quite awhile. I hate to get greedy but I would like one of each,after all I have love Gold Crowns for over 40 years and only loved Diamonds for about 3.:grin: PS I think that Diamonds are about 1 inch taller.

Country Retreat Family Billiards near Boone, NC has Gabriel's. I would love to go down and play on them but it's a 7 hour drive, curvie roads to boot.

HMMM, can't speak for a pro, but I chose the Diamond for playing 1 pocket. They offer longer rails, for no extra charge which makes the pockets 4.5 inches. I have played on Gold Crowns and those shims can sometimes get in the way of a good bank. I asked about smaller pockets on the Gold Crown and the salesman said it was not an option. I did not want big buckets so I opted for the Diamond.
Lil side note:the Diamond Pro was about $2,000 less than the Brunswick also.

the metro comes with 4.5 from the factory, and i think theyre starting to sell the gold crown 5's in a "tournament edition" style too. Which means 4.5. If theyd have had GC's with tight pockets when i bought my metro, id have gotten one. I dont care how much it costs.

I would have also, I just mentioned the price for those out there who are a lil short. Most tables in Tucson pool halls are GC's. It would be nice to practice on the same table that ya go out and play on.
I do love my Diamond Pro though.:thumbup:

This is a good point. Even if Gold Crowns and Diamonds were of the same exact quality, Diamond wins by default because they are supporting pool in a much bigger way than Brunswick right now.

Yeah, because Brunswick never did anything for pool over the last 100+ years - I'd go Diamond too because of their long and historied track record of giving back to the billiards industry.

Whatever has the new car smell wins in the billiards industry. People have short memories.

I'm just not crazy about how the Diamonds look. Remember the old wood paneling of the 1970's? They look cheap to me. I'm sure they play great, but the Brunswick Anniversary Table looks and plays the best. In my opinion.
