Who is the best Staker/Backer in the country?

I posted this in Roy's thread, but it got me thinking and I decided to start a new thread.

Just a thought, who is the best backer in the country? I have to say that Tony Watson's ex-stake horse had to be the best. I saw Tony in Vegas once (no staker with him) and he walked up to another player and said.."Hey, can I borrow 500?" and before the guy could answer Tony pulled out a knot of $100s big enough to clog a sewer drain and said.." I'm just kidding, Stevie sent me out here with $50,000 and said 'get in action!'"

I heard Tony and him went separate ways and he started staking Kieth Bennett. Does he still? Is he still around?

I suppose I should define what I mean by the best. Who is the stake horse that puts up the dough time and time again? Win or lose? I guess I'm looking for the guys that the opposing player "woofs" at or negotiates with because they know he is the guy that will bet high on something he likes.

I don't know who you are talking about concerning Tony Watson. I was told that his big backer was his father in law and when his marriage went south, so did the backer. I've never asked Tony, figured it was none of my business.

Mark Betor has staked some of the biggest games of the last 15 years. Anything from five to fifty thousand is in his range. He put Jack Cooney in some monster games with Toby and James Walden among others.

Betor is kind of scarey though. Not sure I could play with him around. He has a strong presense even though he has seemed like a decent guy.

He's one of the nicest people I have met .
Mark commands and gives respect.

Without a doubt. Barak Obama. :thumbup:You can be a failure, be an inferior player and dishonest and he will bail you out. This time last year George Bush would be the better backer. You should go to government grants and see how your money is being spent.

On a less sarcastic note I have no idea who is a good backer due to the fact that I don't know any wealthy individuals. :(

This is a great idea for a thread.I have always wondered who is the best stakehorse behind some of the greatest road warriors.I cant wait to read some of the posts.

Steve Little was Tony`s backer and they parted ways a few years ago for several reasons.Steve is around Wilmington N.C. I heard he was backing Keith Bennet but that was a while ago.

Not sure if Mark Betor has staked a game in almost a decade. So he was the first that came to my mind but he doesn't qualify for the premise of this thread. If he has been involved in games recently, I haven't heard of them.

Currently I would have to say it is John Mars. Straight and to the point - come play my guy for $20K. And John is always respectful of those around him.

I know one guy who has been given 40k a year and plus all his entry/traveling expenses covered...

One of the oldest Stakers that I know is probably Concrete John. He has staked several, but most consistently John Brumback over the past 10 years or so.

Gamemaker - because he absolutely hates his money. Just bet the other way and you got a winner.

Harry Platis

You would have to include Harry Platis. I've watched him in action and I believe all the stories I've heard/read about him. Grady said that Harry was the only backer he knew with an 1-800 phone number.
