Who is your favorite pool commentator?

Billy I and Danny D are the best tandem

One guy who is really underrated is Nick Varner- I enjoy his analysis and he has a very unique way of speaking- almost as if he is on the verge of cracking up/laughing at any moment

My all time favorite is Grady Mathews. Such a witty story teller. I also agree with Billy K that the high level players can be a real treat. Brandon Shuff is very good. So is Jeremy Jones, Shannon Daulton, Johnny Archer and Shawn Putnam.

Good chemistry is important, imo. Two guys that are friends can do really well especially if they different styles. They don't mind calling BS on each other.

Buddy Hall is on my short list and so is Billy I.

I think many are very good on single tournament matches but longer sessions can be a different story.

I always like Juicy Pop for color commentary. You can always count on Juice for some off the wall obscure observations. Nawlins Glenn is the info man. Jeff Beckley is very good too!

Last but certainly on MY short list is JoeyA. Joey has a way of getting information out of whoever he is with. Don't worry, Joey already knows the answer.

I honestly can't stand Jay's commentary. I just watched all of the 2012 Mosconi Cup on Youtube, and was very tempted to mute it because of Jay. I don't mind Jim Wyche so much.

well probably he is pointing something out on his commentary that interest me that don't to others.i respect if you can't stand him i respect that..

For me it has to be Buddy Hall. I love listening to him for some reason. His voice, sense of humor and pool knowledge makes watching pool more enjoyable for me.

I don't know if I've actually answered this question in a while.

My two favorite commentators of all time currently are Buddy Hall and Jeremy Jones.

Freddie <~~~ and I don't have a close third in mind

Jim Wych and Jay Helfert are a great duo. I really like Bob Guerrero too.

Ever see Efren Reyes' 9 rack run against Bustamante in the WPA 9 Ball tournament? I forget who was commenting then but that was also one of my favorites.

I'm not a big fan of Jay, but I can tolerate him. He's got the knowledge and all, it's just that it always sounds as if he's commentating under the influence of wacky-backy, like he JUST burned a big 'ol fat one!!!

Don't have a favorite , but Billy I is good with just a host , not another pro in the pairing . He and Danny D get off on tangents . When he tells you what he thinks a player will do and they don't , he tells you why they went another route . Ewa Mataya does a decent job minus Mitch .

Yes, he's great. It's even good that he's called buddy. Really suits him. :)

I wish it were true, but it's not the case. Maybe it's because I can get a "natural" high watching a good pool match and seeing all the twists and turns. I actually have fun working these matches and it doesn't feel like "job."

P.S. I really enjoy working with Jim Wych and Jerry Forsyth, both consummate professionals. Wish I could do more matches with JoeyA, what a pleasure he is and so astute. Of the players I've worked with Buddy stands out. He's just as sharp when discussing a match from the sidelines. The man knows and understands POOL!

Gettin' "high" on pool is easy to do!!!

Best to ya, Jay!!!

I think, for me, it would be easier to pick the worst commentator....
...there is a LOT of good commentating going on....
...and I like the chat function...it can get hilarious..I watch small screen.

I'm a bit biased here, I like Jim Wych and Sid Waddell with many pros.
...although Jimmy is also a pro at billiards, I feel he is a a pro commentator
first....but don't think he can't play...as a snooker player, he's the only one
I know of who became the correct answer to a New York Times crossword.

My favorite two player hook-up is Diliberto and Incardone...they've done
road trips and are very comfortable with each other.

A lot of the players are great color commentators...but they need a media
pro with them to keep it on track.

I think they all need more cheat sheets...info on the players and history
of the tournaments...like golf. Danny could probably write them.

I remember Cardone asking Grady once if these two particular players
had ever locked horns with each other in the action days....Grady said
"Well, they circled each other a few times, but they never did play."
Buddy couldn't stop laughing for a while...I like Buddy's laugh.

Billy and Grady were awesome, for a couple reasons.

Not only were they spot-on as far as what was going on at the table, and the player's thought process, but funny as hell at times.

Billy is still around fortunately, and is still awesome with almost anyone, but there was a vibe between them even listening to them on VHS.

As far as Accu-Stats commentators,in my mind the worst performance ever was Keith McCready, and this is absolutely not a personal thing,or anything bad about his actual commentary.

I have a VHS of a Sands match between Alex and Tang Hoa. Billy is in the booth with Keith, and either the mic Keith was using was not adjusted for volume,or he was 4 feet from it,because you can barely hear him say anything unless you turn your volume way up. Of course, when Billy speaks, you have to adjust the volume again, and it makes this particular match almost unwatchable.

I don't think any of the guys Pat has used over the years has been bad as far as what they say about the action at the table.

Buddy was particularly good,as is Jay Helfert,Tony Annigoni,Mark Wilson,David Maddox, and the late Weanie Beanie.

I put the guys that do PPV and online streaming match commentary in a separate category.

I won't say anything really negative about Jim Wych, but he is a little dry for my tastes, and slightly behind the pack in his explanations of how a shot will be executed,as well as why. Not bad enough to dog him though, like some.

I think J.R. Calvert does well on Accu-Stat's as well as online.

Jerry Forsyth is right there amongst the best of those I hear on matches I've watched online.

J.R's main man Alvin is good too.

One of the funniest commentary duos I've ever heard other than on Accu-Stats was Shannon Daulton and Rodney Morris doing the final from the Archer tournament between SVB and Warren Kiamco.

They both had a few beers, and made it entertaining as well as informative.

Johnny's wife Melanie did a hell of a job in a match from the same tournament, for someone that isn't a hardcore player. Tommy D.
