Who knows buddy Dennis?

lee you are a joke. buddy will teach the proper way to stroke a ball not punch a ball. my son andy really wants to see you for what you said to his mother.

Buddy is a world class human, a great legend of the game and MEGA KNOWLEDGABLE! I can't see how the average player wouldn't gain from a lesson with him...

I'm a Columbia SC resident and have spent the last 10 years around him and have never seen him the least bit out of line with anyone. A real straight shooter in both applyable senses

Kevin

oh yeah and Lee Brett is a joke

One top player in my pool hall, Richard Pierce, got some instruction from him and handed that instruction down to me.

One of the most basic things I learned was to bridge with your palm on the table instead of up on your fingertips.

From what I understand, Buddy Dennis is someone who has an incredible library of knowledge. I have never met him, but have heard stories about him and were all good.

re dabarbr

Let's see, both were great players and you beat both of them. What does that make you, chopped liver??

I just saw an EMail about a local 10ball tournament. A guy named Frank is mentioned among the top 4. There must be another dabarbr running around.

Not a bad finish. Real strong locals and that Santos guy.

Good job

3railkick

ps: I enjoyed both you and Jay in the booth at Oscar/Morra at HT

If there's another dabarbr then I want a TAR matchup to see who's the real dabarbr.
P.S. I let my buddy Fach go to the hot seat. He was playing real good.

The Baltimore Bullet

Nice to see Buddy's still playing. He came to Lancaster, in 1976, and played my friend Lenny, 9-Ball. Lenny was at the top of his game, then, and they started playing $3 a game. Fairly quickly, Lenny got up 5 games when Buddy asked him to play for $5. Lenny lost $60. (the guy was killing the cue ball, like I had never seen before) We didn't know who he was, although he was playing with a Joss. We sent him to Reading, where he ran into Ace at Heister's and broke even. Later, Tim told me that it was Buddy. Not long after that, if my memory is correct, Jimmy Matz hooked up with him at the old Side Pocket, in Glen Burnie. Jimmy tortured Buddy for $7-800. They played again, not long after. Jimmy got up early, but Buddy came back and was workin' into Jimmy's previous winnings. Jimmy went to the bathroom and locked himself in there for about an hour. When he came out, it was business as usual for Jimmy.
I believe Danny Janes or Tim Scruggs made Buddy a cue with bullets on it, right after the movie came out.
Buddy and his wife came to Lancaster, in 1996, and played in a $2000 added event at Diamond Billiards. (Won by Jose Garcia) Very strong field, he finished 5/6th. He was setting up lessons at Champions, in Laurel, then. I sent two kids down to take lessons from him. Both came back strong and had monster breaks.
Buddy is quite the gentleman. (His wife is a sweetheart, too!)
Good Teacher.

Triple smart pool player. Always was. Please tell him Jay says hello. Buddy could play, right up there with the best hustlers. He won't remember but the first time we met was in a bar. I was beating up the game for a dollar or two a man. Buddy put his quarter up and waited his turn (maybe five or six ahead of him!).

When it got to him, I asked him what he wanted to play for. He said, "I only have tens and twenties in my wallet, is that okay?" I thought I had a real live one here. We played $10 Eight Ball and I won. Pretty quickly everyone else dropped out of the game and I was left with Buddy. He proceeded to beat me four or five games in a row before I got the message. I think he ran out every rack for ten a game. We've been buddies ever since. I even steered him to a few spots.

Sorry to throw a damper, Jay, but he fell short when he matched up with Andam some years ago. It wasn't even close. He got the 7 from Andam but it didn't help him at all. He stayed in his chair looking up at the ceiling while the match was on.

It looked like Andam was practicing during their match. He switched gears during the match to keep Dennis hooked and secured. I don't remember if they even played a second set. They played in a tight Diamond table in Shark's Club in Fairfax, VA.

We got bored watching the match that we left Andam to finish the set while we drinking at the bar.

He got spanked bad, and I mean bad!!

Am I missing something here ?

I read then re-read Jay's whole post & I fail to see where he even mentioned Andam anywhere ? So why did you feel the need to throw this in there ? Does this...even if it's true..make Buddy a less of a teacher ? I know champions that play world class that don't make good teachers cuz they don't have the patience for it.

Buddy

I was getting ready to play David Howard 500 a set 9ball getting the 5 and the break when Buddy came in and saw me practicing so we played cheap to get me in stroke. when we got done Buddy said you'll beat him as long as I don't play him on table 1.We started playing on table 8 it had a new cloth and it was a sloppy pocket table, he won the first 4 games playing 5ahead and my nerves calmed dowed and I won 4 straight games feeling great when the owner made us change tables because they had a MD.9 ball tournament schedule to play on that table.I was so confident I would win that I played on table 1,Never made a ball on the break so I had 1 shot and it was a bank shot the 5th game and dogged it so I lost having the nuts. Remember one thing BUDDY told me not to play him on table 1 and I told him just because you have the nuts you doesn't have to win. David Howard won US open twice and nevered missed a ball playing me.Also I beat Buddy 6 or 7 games getting the 8 and the break naturally I didn't take his money.BUDDY was the best 9 BALL player in MD.

and???? I saw SVB get beat by a girl in a huge tourney one time 2...Losing is part of the game. It is the way you handle it that determines the player...

just a note on the andam buddy match
andam was in his prime and was spotting very good players the 7 (Buddy) 7 & the break ( cigar tom, randy stock ) the 6 ( Danny Green ) and winning.
Buddy was out of his prime and teaching and running leagues so it was like ali in his prime fighting joe louis...duh
Andam was the #3 player in the world at the time
and ohh...did mention he gave a very good playing Gerry Slivka the 7,8 playing 9 ball and won both sets?
Buddy played every human that would play in his prime . And on the bar table, beat most of them. He had no fear and tons of heart....and he could PLAY!
And yes, he killed his rock as good as anyone and better than anyone on the bar table with the big ball.
GL Buddy

I met Buddy the first time around 1963 when my best friend beat the rest of the best in Baltimore (Jon Ellerton) was his name. The last money game left was Buddy at Glen Burnie and the house backed him at $20.00 game 9 ball.----------6 to 7 hours later Buddy won $60.00.

Buddy visited us a year or 2 later at OUR hangout---the Rendezvous in College Park, Md. It was like we were old friends and he let me win 4 games of $5.00 8ball to get players in.

We saw him a few times later---I understand---like third hand info---he did very well the first few years they had the open 9ball in vegas in the late late 60's-early 70's.

Even as a teen he was a class act.

I remember Buddy Dennis being in New Orleans around the early 1990's hanging around The Sport's Palace. Nope, I've never seen him eat any crawfish, and that's the way I usually gauge a pool player's game. He did have a respectable reputation though, and a calm demeanor. Video the lessons and put them on youtube so we can all learn something!

And raise the bet!

Good skills my man...

I guess you never heard of cigar tom vanover, vanover won 9 straight maryland state championships in the same time frame that buddy was playing in baltimore, tom just told me the other day that him and buddy played 1time for money, vanover beat him like 11 to 2 and buddy said he had to leave,so myself and many other people in baltimore wouldnt agree with you,but i do know that buddy is a great player an a man!

WERE YOU THERE THAT NITE AT BILL AND BILLIES,when andam gave cigar tom the 7,heres the story, they are playing race to 13 for 1000,tom is winning 9to2,andam and his crew ask tom if he wants to double the bet,so us guys with tom figure that was a no brainer(to us nobody could spot cigar tom the 7 and we had a 9to2 lead)so we all double the bet, then we all set there an amazement, andam did stuff u dont even read about, before we all knew it it was tied at 9all,of couse then tom loses 13to9 and that was the end of that game, set and match, andam is the best gambling pool player that ever pick up a cue in my opionon, things he did that nite can not be duplicated,i dont think vanovers won a match since that nite!

Buddy Dennis - A PLUS Rating

I ran around with Buddy for quite a while, great player, nice guy, his knowledge of all games in pool is tremendous, would be great to take private lessons from. Please tell Buddy "Humphrey" from New Orleans says hello, same for his wife & son....

Regarding Richard. In Miami Ok. A few months ago, Richard was playing Gabe Owens in the Grand Masters event and was getting Gabe like 3-1 I believe when he missed a relatively easy safety and opened the door for Gabe to get back in the match. He was playing excellent before that mistake but could not get his momentum back and lost. To me it's more impressive to see a player like Richard play really strong against Gabe than Gabe playing strong. Gabe did not win the event. Shane McMinn won, Gabe second.
