Who was the best pool player you ever played in your pool career?

Ralf Souquet is also on my list, and I'm sure anyone else here that has played him will agree.

-Sean

I sure do because I lost all close matches against him in tournaments - he has a knack for running out hill games…

Greetings from Switzerland, David.

Go to Youtube.com come and watch the match between Efren and Harold!
Many Regards,
Lock N Load.

Watching it now, missed it thus far (= watching every scrap of Efren wielding a cue), thanks!

Speaking of the greatest player I ever had the privilege to play, had your question not been about pool, I'd have said Raymond Ceulemans at 3-Cushion (which I don't play, but have always had in mind to pick up one day…). What a fierce competitor!

Greetings from Switzerland, David.

You are welcome,
There is also a video of Buddy Hall talking about how he beat Efren in Texas. Efren was using the alias, I forgot it now but you will see the interview.
Many Regards,
Lock N Load.

I've been lucky to have played many great players over the years, but the one who stands out the most to me was Jean Balukas. I played her several times in competition, both in 14.1 and 9 Ball, and she was a machine.

This is a difficult answer for me, because when you say the word "played" you insinuate that I actually got to do so. I was the opponent, but it might as well have been the janitor, because he got to shoot as much as I did. What I did was rack! So if that constitutes playing, then I guess I've played Mike Sigel, Kim Davenport, Johnny Archer, Dave Matlock, Scott Frost, and Karen Corr.

Believe it or not, Karen Corr is the one that laid the worst beating of all on me!! Brutal! They should have called homicide, cause she murdered me!!

JA (The Scorpion) earlier this yr in an open event in GA.
We played a race to 7 on a barbox.
He beat me 7-0 & then he went on to beat 6 more opponents without giving up a single game. Of course he wound up winning the tournament.

Tommy Kennedy 7-0 in FLA 2011

Mike Davis 7-0 in FLA 2010

Scotty Townsend 7-0 in GA. 2009

strictly from a 'competition' standpoint....

In tournament play, it was Bobby Pickle or Stevie Moore. Both matches were on bar boxes and probably 10-12 years ago. Both were also trounces....lol, but I managed to get a game or two off each of them. Think one was a race to 7 and the other to 9. Outside of that, it was probably Vernon Elliott, but that was in the later years of his life. He actually played in a BCA format in-house league with us one summer. Man, did he hit the balls well even at his age then !!

I know some people have a "beat" list, but I have a "beat by" list. :)

On the bar box: Jesse Bowman, Kirkwood and SVB

Big table: Jon Kucharo, Marco Marquez, Nick Varner, Shannon Daulton, Earl Strickland, Stevie Moore, Rafael Martinez, Larry Nevel, SVB, Jose Parica and my personal favorite Effie.

The best I played, Mr. Brian Roberts. A true gentleman and great player. I am glad to say he is a friend.

That's pretty easy.. Efren Reyes! Let's just say the probable outcome proved to come true. It was fun to watch.

I played Larry Nevel race to 7 9b and lost 9 to 6 , then I played Tony Watson the same day and lost 9 to 5 . I have played Josh Roberts, Scotty Townsend prolly mis- spelled and Shannon Daulton. Keith Bennett several times. I also played "Chew" a few times. Not everyone knows these players but they are "beast"

The BEST pool players I played

Mosconi, twice in 1961-62, Caras in 1962, all 14.1 to 150 in exhibition in Portland, OR, Strickland, too many games to remember (we practiced on a triple shimmed table in Greensboro, NC), and Varner in an exhibition match of 9-ball.

I played many other famous players one game when they were touring or at the BCA show. I truly believe though, that Mosconi in 14.1 and Strickland in 9-ball are the BEST EVER in those games~!

john schimdt

i played john on my home gold crown back in 1999. he had to bank the 9 ball, he broke and ran 6 racks banking the 9 ball. ive never seen anything like that before. he beat me 10 to 2, what a pleasure to watch. i paid off, and then took him on the road , weve been buddies ever since. gary henry, owner of garys victor billiards.

Hi Gary-

My lost to list includes John Schmidt, Nick Spano, Ernesto Dominguez, Raphael Martinez, Max Eberle, Jose Parica.

That's what's nice about local open tournaments-a chance to play some of the best for the price of admission.

One of the Best Players I've played was Earl Stickand..

Name the person that you think is the best pool player you have ever played in your time playing pool from the beginning of your pool playing days? Thank you for your input.
Many Regards,
Lock N Load.

One of the Best Players I've played was Earl Stickand....but on their best day, Efren, Bustemante, Buddy Hall and Johnny Archer were right up there.

Played Mosconi twice in straight pool exhibitions and got whipped bad both times. There's no quit in him even when it's for fun. Had dinner with him. Nice guy when he's away from the table.

Fats two games of eight ball in different exhibitions and B & R on him both times. OK player but a hell of a showman.

Buddy once, a race to 9, in a tourney. I don't think he even knew I was there. Nice guy, though. Got one word for him: SPOOKY!

The Miz,one game of 9 ball when he was promoting Lite beer. Broke dry, sat down and watched.

Practiced a few hours with Massey before an exhibition doing trick shots. The game is still fun for him and a hell of a nice guy. Like a kid in a candy store.

SVB, race to 9, 9 ball, alternating break. Was up 4-2 when he decided to wake up. Beat me, 9-6. Great guy.

That's enough for now.

Nicky Vlahos

For about ten years I was fortunate to be a partner/owner of a pool room and one my best friends was Nicky Vlahos. My tournament record against him is about 15-2 his favor. But that is unimportant.

What matters is that I had the great opportunity to have such a good friend and to play zillions of hours on all types of games (including tennis - at which he also excelled). He made me a good enough player to practice 9-ball and not quit until I ran a rack without the cue ball hitting a rail. It took him a few tries and I got it down to about an hour.

We were pretty even at straight pool with me playing left-handed (I'm right-handed) and him playing one-handed (without the cue touching the table.

I remember Nicky like it was yesterday and he passed on some time ago much too soon. I rank Willie Mosconi as the best I ever saw and then I rank Nicky second.
