Every Tad I ever hit with "clicked" and I just couldn't stand it.
You know I don't like that particular hit either, but there are many on here that wish their cue clicked like a Tad.

This is a very interesting opinion..
Since the SAME people have been making the cues in the SW shop for about 20 years.. When Jerry was alive and now.. Mickey and Al didn't change their techniques after Jerry's passing...

sorry to reply to this thread so late...

i just happened to be reading it...

anyways.. a good friend of mine had a Franklin southwest.. so i decided to hit some balls with it because i wanted to see what the hype was all about with south west cues...

honestly.. i hated it.. even though i didnt like the hit.. it felt like it was a strong cue though...

i believe what i didnt like was the phenolic joint.. it felt dead to me..

i never played with a newer dated southwest so i cant compare them..

and like everybody else said.. it may have been just that particular cue..

it was a predate with no veneers... just ebony (i believe it was ebony) points..

C,

Could the one you test drove have been an imitation??:(

I have had 4 basic Motteys. The 2 SS joint cues played dead IMO but the wood-to-wood sneaky and ivorine joint cue played really well. I had a Frey sneaky that had no life at all in the original shaft but played well with an aftermarket shaft. I don't think I will ever own another Mottey (SS joint anyway) or Frey. Some may like them but they are not for me.

My dad had a Samsara cue that played so bad that nobody would play with it. We would be at a tournament and one of the players we know would show up without a cue occasionally and he would rather play with a house cue or anything but not that Samsara. Nobody liked the way that cue played that tried it in the short time he owned it.

Out of all the Schons I have owned only one played bad to me and I think it was just the weight of the cue. I think that says volumes about their quality. I'm not a huge fan of Schons but they are well made cues.

I can't think of any more clunkers right now but I'm sure there have been more.

i dont believe so.. the person that owned it was a reputatable cue dealer and really knows his stuff about cues.. but like i said.. it could be the way all south west play.. i dont know for sure. since that was the only one i played with and that was just my opinion.. and what i think it all came down to was the phenolic joint.. i think they are just not for me..

Every individual cue plays differently. My opinion is based on my experience with the particular cues I have encountered.

Having said that, I have been disappointed by the hit of these cues:

- Cognoscenti
- Tad
- Tascarella
- Ernie Martinez
- AE
- Black
- Joss West
- PFD
- Skip and Perry Weston
- Southwest
- Black Boar
- Schick
- Mottey
- Blue Grass
- Hercek
- Ginacue

I have been impressed by the hit of these cues:

- Searing
- Lambros
- Jensen
- Gilbert

It has been awhile

When I published All About Pool I used to get many cues from cuemakers, brokers and in trades (used to do all of the shows). It kills me to say this, because he is probably one of the nicest guys that I remember dealing with; but Joel Hercek was by far my biggest disappointment. The cue itself was beautiful,I just couldn't make a ball with it. Next is Southwest...just don't get it (then again I don't get Julia Roberts either) and finally, Cousins cues.

Most of these cue makers are decent people trying hard to make a living and most of these replies are damaging their reputations even though most people probably know that these opinions are for the most part nonsense,Gossip is gossip even if it starts with a disclaimer.,I for one find this to be destructive and slanderous. If any of you knockers have a south west call me I will buy it and you can buy whatever you think will play better.

Thanks Deanoc

Well, first, it is MY opinion. It certainly is not gossip. So just why are the wonderful cuemakers above criticism? They produce a product for profit. It is my right to offer my opinion on that product. It is your opinion that a southwest is a wonderful cue. I respect your opinion. I just don't happen to share your view.

The hit can often times be adjusted with a tip change, as I have hit with cues with a layered tip and they hit like crap, One of whitch was a Joss, I hated that thing until I changed the tip, WOW what a differance... Then I have hit with cues with a non layerd tip then installed a layered tip and they turned out to be great cues.. So when I tell you a cue is sh*t that means I have tried everything, weight, tip, grip, bridge length you name it.

Honestly, I havent found a cue that actualy is so terrible I wouldnt play with it.. I judge cues by accuracy, shaft compression and feel.. (how the cue feels in my hand) Some are weight forward, some are butt heavy, and some are neutral, this being my favorite..

the most whippy cue Ive shot with was an older Players Sneaky, that shaft was like a tuning fork, it vibrated at least 10 sec after a power shot.. no kidding! but that was an isolated case, as I have hit with several afterwards and they seemed fine. So if any that had to be the worst. but hell I won all kind of money with that cue..

I think a lot of whether a cue hits like crap or not is subjective, personal preference if you will.

I had a meucci for a while that i absolutely did not like. I could make balls ok with it, but i hated playing with it. It felt like a peice of 2x4.

I used to be in love with Joss cues. When i first started out, i saw several older players that had beautiful joss's. My goal for the first year or two of playing was to own one. Then i actually got to play with one for a while.
A good friend of mine bought a 500 dollar joss. After playing with it for 5 minutes i was very dissapointed. It hit worse then the afformentioned meucci. At the time i was very glad i had the opportunity to play with one before i bought one for myself.

I've played with a capone that i didn't care for much.
I also did NOT like the hit of a josey sneaky pete. It hit wayyy too limp.

I played with a philipi that i really didn't like. To be fair it was a sneaky pete so it was prob made from a dufferin so the butt was really really thick.

I discovered predator 314's a few years ago and have been a convert ever since.
I used to work at a poolhall, and the owner had a few really nice customs for sale. He let me hit with a jerry oliver and i immediately fell in love with it. I HAD to have that cue. He gave me a break and sold it to me for 500 since he liked me and i did work for him. Man, i loved that cue. Around that time i was also learning to tip shafts on the lathe that they had there. I would re-tip house cues to practice, and even had a couple people let me experiment on them. Well, when i bought the oliver it had a very low tip, and being the idiot i am i thought it would be a good idea to re-tip the cue of my dreams. While sanding the tip off with the bit, i dropped my cigarette on my lap and accidently hit the ferrule with the chuck that was still rotating and totally f***ed my ferrule up. I ended up buying a 314 shaft for it and i totally fell in love with it.

When that cue got stolen, i didn't really think i was going to get another predator, but a friend of mine sold me a used lucasi/314 combo that hit about the same as my oliver and i've been using 314s and pred shafts almost exclusively ever since.

I had a predator z shaft on a players sneaky that for some reason absolutely hit like CRAP. I hated that cue. I ended up selling it for half the price i paid for it just so i could get rid of it.

Ironically im shooting with a preator sneaky with the z2 shaft which i'm very partial to so i dont know. I can't imagine the 2nd gen z shaft hitting THAT much differently from the first generation, but i hit with Mike Davis's cue (harris with a z shaft) and i didn't like the way it hit either. The only reason i bought my current cue was cuz i hit a few balls with it and ended up really liking it.

I've been rambling for a while :p , but to reliterate i think in my experiance its mostly personal preference.

you know I bought a Meucci once I wouldnt hit a dog in the ass with, then I have had some that absolutely were some of the best playing cues Ive owned.. With Meucci, I think you need to buy direct or buy from an authorized dealer, budgetcues.com comes to mind..

I have often wondered, what a Meucci Power Piston would be like with a predator z shaft.. anyone tried this combination?

Wow, what a great thread......

Are you kidding me?!?!?! Its exactly this type of bull-sh*t that we DON'T need here on AZ Billiards!!!

This is the greatest site in the history of the internet and EVERY cuemaker makes the greatest intruments ever assembled. Then some half wit like you decides to jump on this wonderful corner of the web and do everything you can to sling mud at the faces of true artists and their art. All you are doing is mocking this game that we love so much and the geniouses who provide us with hours upon hours of pleasure. Not to mention, he drag the quality of this site (and its integrity) down with you!!!!

Shame on you 1pRoscoe!!! You are a horrible human being!! You deserve to be tarred and feathered. You and your cronies! You mock us. You laugh at us! You do what you can to try our patience! And I, for one, will not stand for it anymore!

Leave us alone and let us continue to live in euphoric, ignorant bliss.

Thank you,
Brian <---------- loves reading ridiculous sh*t like this!

It aint the pole!

It is the monkey swinging it.
If a cue has a hit you don't care for the reason is probably you not the cue. It just may not be what you are used to and most people are literally monkeys swinging a pole.:D
So this should be a Hay Monkeys thread! And any monkey can tell you the cue is not magic but the stroke is!:D
No offense,
Merry Christmas,
Nick :)

That's because the monkeys gotta "stroke it, not poke it". What movie is that from? First correct answer gets a greenie, yes?
