why do you play for money?

Maybe a random question but i think maybe a very important one. i have discovered as i got to a certain point in my pool game i got bored fairly easily when playing games with friends or just random people in the pool hall. causing myself to do things i would otherwise not do during a real match and or tournament. So by making a small or medium wager i could force my self to stay focused and get the best out of my self. But would like to see what others think?

cuz money makes the world go 'round !!

Mostly , I play for money because I LIKE money .
More importantly , because my CREDITORS like money , and they like ME better when I am able to give them some .
Actually , the same is true for strippers - THEY like money , and like me better when I am able to give them some . . . . .

So , to make people like me , I need money.
Paradoxically , the people I win the money from don't seem as fond of me . . . .

To me, it's like going to the track just to "Watch' the horses run. hell, the race is boring, I just want to see the results! Then bet the next race!

Hello, you are on the right track by playing people for a little "cheese" when you play! It will force you to focus on what your doing. You won't play those dumd shots any more because if you do you stand to loose your rent money!!! I think it can only help your game! Just don't bet over your head!!

anybody that bet's there rent money is a fool!!

Why do you play for money

Because when I first started some guy told me it was the only way I could get better , he was such a nice guy he showed me how himself.

And NOW, on the center stage, put your hands together for the hottest stripper around ..... here she comes ......> VIIIIISSSAAAA!

And on the side stage, don't forget to take your dollars out for her also gents, we have the seductive ... MASTERCARD!!!

cuz, in a lotta cases, it's the only way to get some competition. I can play "seriously" playing for nothing, but for some reason it seems that MOST can't. So, in order to get a game, and one where both participants care about the outcome, a wager is usually necessary. Honestly, I could do without all the woofing and bickering for spots, but for some that is a big part of the fun (trying to get an edge in the negotiation). I usually, just say "FINE", to the first offer, and play....if it really is outta line, and they are stealing, I'll pull up sooner than I would have had they made a closer game. Oh, well, part of pool!

I do it because I like the "edge". I like to get the juices flowing and have a REASON to win. I like the high that comes from winning when it MEANS something.

It's tough to pysche yourself into playing the "right way" when playing for funsies. Especially if you are playing people you can beat easily anyway.

People are competitive, some more than others. A hustler plays for money to make the rent. A player plays for money for the thrill. For the hustler it's a job. For the player it's competitive entertainment.

You don't HAVE to gamble though. Just go find all the weekly tournaments and play in those to satsify your competitiveness.

Or find much better players you can rack for. Play them for table time. THEY might not try their best because they are far above you but YOU will have to try yours to beat them regardless.

It helps me focus.
Makes me play better, although only to a point that is good enough to win.

I like the high.

It has recently been brought to my attention that I hustle.
However, I don't feel too bad about it, because my victims are good players who have no problem taking money from weaker players.

I enjoy beating guys that are in it for the cash, because for me it isn't the money but the rush.

I don't hustle beginners and often offer ridicules spot.

Again it is the high.

I don't think of myself as a gambler. Perhaps I'm developing a problem. :)

People bring this type of idea up to me all the time.

Ive heard "How do you sleep at night taking that spot?" Simple answer, "On a big pile of money"

Sometimes I get "Dont you want to improve your game? Why not challenge yourself when gambling" My answer, "I dont want people to say, 'oh that Dan, he beat insert name here even for $50' I want them to say, oh that Dan, he plays horrible and takes all the cash."

I play for one reason only when matching up, I want all of the other persons money. I dont want them to envy my game, I dont want them to think I play well, I dont want them to say they cant beat me. I want them to complain that I played bad, complain about the rolls, complain about giving out too much spot etc etc etc and then pay me a large sum of money.

so long as someone aint nuthuggin I just like to play for cash now to keep it interesting for the most part. I def still get in the box from time to time for a more serious game when the action is good.

But I try and shy away today from trying to gamble to make a living. Alot of places its just the same 5-10 guys just trading around what little money they don't have so imop Its not even worth getting my nose open for their cell phone bill money.....as alot of games offered me here were invented by nut huggers anonymous chapter 70506 lol.

It just differs from place to place as I like to match up........thats really the only reason I play for the bread is to be more serious and match up and conquer the opposition/table/myself.

You can win without having the best of all three of those but its so much sweeter when you can control the 3 (opposition/table/myself).....thats the biggest reward is knowing that you tactically handled your opponent to your prime, you used the layout in the most efficient way and you held composure and didn't let yourself get away from yourself.

tho its not necessarily for cash like gambling a tournament is still playing for money.....just not the same set up as head to head matching up.

We played a little 8ball tournament that a group of better players showed up to tonight.......the two other best guys in it played each other first round and i took the winner out 5-1.....then the next guy 5-1....then i was offered a saver with me getting the major chunk of the fund and I took it since the payscale was lopsided.

But anyways the 12 racks that I played I shot 3 bad shots.....and 2 of those shots cost me those 2 racks.....the rest I just did my job to a T and ousted the 3 components that I was speaking of earlier.......My opponent would miss (or I break and run) and I just ran every ball out in effortless fashion, very relaxed.....Neither of the guys I played shot badly.....I just didn't give them the chance too.

Its nice to win a match b/c you won the dam thing with no lee way for anyone to say "oh well he got bad rolls or WTF ever" people like to feed others bs on the buffet line......I'm glad I did my job and gave excuses like that the boot for my opponents....and myself, incase I played bad and tried to bs me which I'm not too keen on doing.

I'm happier with that result than I am with any kind of money.....its the performance that matters to me not the money.

hope that makes sense,

It is fun to play for money that you can afford to lose, but it is pure hell when you're playing on short money. I've experienced both sides of this.

I feel fortunate in that I'm not addicted to gambling. There are, of course, some action players who are, indeed, addicted to gambling and will bet their last quarter.

We used to have poker games at my house, pot limit. We all knew each other, which made it even more fun. Right next to the poker table was my pool table, and we were all pool players, so sometimes we'd engage in pool action games as well. We got to know each other well, to include the tells. :grin-square:

After a while, it wasn't as much fun seeing my friends lose their rent money or their cab rent, et cetera, going home broke and suffering.

Thereafter, we started to have poker tournaments, where everybody would buy 100 chips for 20 bucks, still pot limit, but it was so much better. We could play multiple tournaments each night. Somebody had a chance to win a nice chunk of cheese and nobody got hurt.

You should never gamble if you can't afford to lose, and you can take that advice to the bank! ;)

I use to love to play for money cuz there use to be alot of people that hated money & I'm a sucker for a love/hate relationship !

Money won by skill is twice as sweet as money earnt

Playing for money hones your game under pressure. It's easy to pot away like a pro when playing your mates for fun. Under pressure when you have something to lose (in this case money), that is when your true game comes out. Do you rise to the occasion or fold ?

I don't play for big big money , not enough that i can't afford to lose it, but enough that it is a bit of a sting on the wallet. Usually around $500

The reason people play for money is to chase the high they get from winning it.

Typically, they experience some early success in a risk endeavor (poker, horse racing, casino gambling, day trade stock market) and get a good buzz from it.

Then they spend the rest of their lives trying to recapture that buzz.

Most end up losers, but tend to suppress memory of the losses and keep going for that winning feeling. Just another drug.

You nailed it. I saw so much of this when I worked at the racetrack (4 years) that I just soured on the whole concept of gambling. Though I still go to the track for social reasons (If you've ever been to Keeneland Racecourse then you will know exactly what I mean - beautiful horses and fast women!), I don't enjoy even placing a two dollar wager. I just saw too much pain because of gambling.
