Why don't champions match up more?

They need stakehorses. too tough to keep trying to beat each other up. too many talented players nowadays

I think we should round up all these broke-dog pool players and put them in a zoo. That way we could all stand outside the cages and marvel at these creatures whenever we want.

whatever happened to playing for pride?? Very sad.

I can understand why people don't want to gamble big money on, perhaps, a coin flip... and I can understand why stakehorses only bet if they think they have the nuts... that's economics.

I don't understand why the top players on the planet wouldn't want to match up for pride's sake... maybe pay both the guys for participating and the winner a handsome reward. In this situation, the only thing you have to lose is pride... you are making money and you have the chance to be able to say "I beat this guy, I'm the best."

That's the difference between pool and the big sports. I can promise you that a tennis pro who wins Wimbledon isn't crying because of the fat check they just received... they aren't thinking about it at all. They are happy because they have reached the pinnacle of their sport and their hard work has finally turned into something to be proud of. Same goes for the Super Bowl, World Series, Stanley Cup, World Cup... it's about pride and it doesn't seem like anyone in pool has it anymore. That's why the sport is dying... it ain't poker.

The big athletes aren't losing anything if they don't win... they just don't win the extra prize. It's hard to ask someone to enter into an agreement and take big risks to accomplish great things when they have so much to lose. When you have nothing to lose, you can accomplish so much more.

John Elway told me that going to the Super Bowl and the Pro Bowl cost him money. Most are going to pool tournaments hoping to get enough return to get home>

The stake horses are about dead too. Too many have been stabbed in the heart far too many times. The players can blame this on themselves as well!

Few of the "good old day" stake horses have anything good to say about any of the players of today.

It's even difficult to get your game back because nowadays players don't wanna work out on a regular basis to improve. Few if any will play 6-8 hours straight which makes no sense, I've played fairly good players 35 years younger than me and they quit because they got tired, go figure. About 10 years ago Scott Smith had Busta/Efren/Luat in town to do an exhbition, I jumped at the chance to play Busta cheap sets just to work out, he blew me away the first two sets, I got my money back the next two, I next played Luat, again cheap sets, he gave me I think a game or 2 to eleven, we split sets, I couldn't win....too tired, been up now 18 hours and worked all day, shoulda won that second but hit a wall, tho loved every minute of it. Here you have some of the best players in the world willing and gladly playing cheap sets and hatin' to loose, different mindset and probably why the Pinoys are a notch better than most US players, they love it live it and breath it 24/7, John Schmit sounds like he's always game and is probably why he's Tough To Beat.

bout 3 months ago, a good friend of mine who is 40 years old played a guy who is 23. The game was 10 ahead for $2000. The youger jumped out to a 4 game lead, missed a 7 ball and it was history after that.

When it was over the younger made the coment that he didn't think the older could play like that ,that long. He added furtherly that few of the older players can hang in there very long.

Total time of the match was 3 hour and 40 minutes. I lmao at the kid!!

A lot of the time the players trying to make a game get blamed for being nits when it's really the stakehorses pulling the strings from the background.

I give SVB a lot of credit. He plays anyone 9 or 10-ball and never asks for a spot that I have heard of. There are a few more in the US like him...but only a small few. Johnnyt

Another reason

is because on the way up, players earn and get a lot of respect. When they get in the upper atmosphere, the only way they keep that respect is by winning. If they lose very often, that respect goes away, and their egos can't take it.

I find it odd that champions don't match up and play more offen. I would think they would be playing constantly. Most after they getting put out of a tournament, c-ya later. Just a thought...

it seems to me that a lot of people like to bet higher as they get better. if these pro's are like the most people then they probably like to bet pretty high. here's what i'm getting to. most of these guys don't have jobs so getting enough money bet that high probably isn't an easy task

John...I don't know why you want to pick on instructors and trick shot guys...but whatever. The answer is easy...the trick shot guys are ENTERTAINERS...not hustlers and gamblers (most of them also have real jobs too, besides pool...for example, Stefano Pelinga is a police officer in Rome, Italy). Personally, I make a great living, and have a blast doing it (whether I am entertaining or teaching). I made a living gambling pool for many years, but it's nowhere near the income I make now. Gambling for most is a crapshoot. Tournament pool only makes money for the top 2 or 3 guys. The downside of my job, is that I have to be 'on the road' over 200 days a year, and travel all over the country to do it. The upside is that I truly love my job. Do you? You're a great tournament player, and a strong favorite in many money games. That's simply not the case for the majority of pro-ability players...at least in this country.

I know we are talking about champions, but I REALLY like to watch regular guys playing for REAL stakes. Nothing crazy, but enough to hurt, like your favorite cue, or the rent, pool room top dog, bragging rights, whatever.

I like to see long runs and stellar play, but when any 2 players are REALLY giving it their all......I'm watching.

i said what i said because you always bring up how broke the pros are. how do you know if there broke or not.

you go out of your way to put down the real entertainers which is guys who can actually play pool not pose like they can .like you.
furthermore i would be willing to bet the top ten pros against the top ten guys like you that the pros have made more money in there life than your group.
you need to get off your highhorse and quit talking like all you trickshot guys are rich and all the pros are broke.

if i take what ive made total, lessons, sponsors, money games ,tourneys, videos etc ive probably made more than you.
from now on anytime you run your mouth about the pros in a negative light ,which you do all the time.im going to be on you like a bad habit.

try this scott if you dont have something nice to say than dont say anything.
if you got a problem with that, i got a game for you.

im going to let you match assets with myself, archer, duell, immonen, busty, reyes,,morris, souquet, hopkins, varner, owen, putnam,
williams,ortmann,hohmann, lee,fisher,corr, etc etc.
i could go on and on,but my point is quit acting like your all that because ive seen your whole act and frankly i would much rather be me and im on the road like 40 days a year .the rest of the time im fishing ,golfing, riding my goldwing,or maybe even playing pool.

good luck with entertaining ,it must be a shallow feeling when a bunch of people watch your show and think your awesome but deep down you know girls can give you like the 6.lol.

now see i could have used the if i cant say nothing nice dont say anything approach but i didnt.
not very pleasant is it to read negative stuff about yourself.

so cut the b.s. and quit saying negative crap and i will too.have a nice day.

Mr. Schmidt...You know, you're like the 3rd grade schoolyard bully. You don't like what someone says (even though it's true), and your first reaction is, "You wanna fight?"...or in your case, "You wanna gamble?" I did not say ALL pros are broke (nor did I say that me or any other trickshot guys are rich). There is certainly a very small group of ELITE American pro players who make a living playing pool. You and Archer are certainly in that group. So is Shane, and there are perhaps a couple dozen other high profile names that could be included in that group. However, there are literally a hundred or more players who possess the same, or nearly the same skills, who live "paycheck to paycheck" (if that's what you want to call it). The main reason is that they CHOOSE not to have a paying job...even though pool does not provide any kind of decent living for them.

How do I know the American pros are mostly broke?...because they SAY so. Look around...it doesn't take a genius to figure it out. Max Eberle is as talented an American pro as anybody (including you), but he came here humbly asking for help to go play in a world championship tournament. He didn't have the money "stashed", and try to "get over" on the forum posters, by pretending to be 'broke'. He was honest, forthright, and humble...and as a result, a group of us "invested" in him, allowing him to go (much like what was done for you, a few years ago, by Don Purdman). BTW, my comments were about the AMERICAN pro players...not the Pinoys, Germans, English, etc (many of which, are subsidized by their governments, or prominent businessmen).

You're NOT an entertainer John, no matter how you want to color it. You're a 'colorful' character, to be sure, and as I already said, a top contender against almost anybody, anytime. Just because someone is an expert player does not automatically make them an entertainer. You have to be a lot more than just good...you have to be a showman. You have not seen my show, so you are not qualified to pass judgement on me, or my skills as an entertainer/instructor. I have been doing my gigs a lot longer than you've been a recognized professional player (and my mentor, Jack White, made more $$$ than your group of 10 people, added together). Some places I've gone back to, year after year, for 15 years. That says that I must be doing something that somebody likes.

I don't have anything personal against you John...and I've said that many times here before. You make some oddball comments sometimes (which usually are admitted by you, as, shall we say, 'poor judgement'). That said, I like you, because you come on here, are not afraid to speak your mind...and frequently participate in discussions, like the rest of us. That makes you more "real" to many of us here, who will never dream of having the skills you possess at the pool table. I'm not putting anyone down. I speak the truth, even though you may not see it that way. I do have a tendency to call a spade, a spade.:D

now john settle down no fighting as we need you to recover from your injuries and help us americans start to win more often.so leave all fighting to me and send them my way as we can take it to the parking lot and settle all these issues and as for all you guys that talk all this dumb shit stop bashing all us pros most of you guys dont gamble or wouldnt even bet your alive anyways so whats the point.

you say one thing and then backtrack. you say only a couple pros make money now its dozens .
another thing you know it all, when i was put in the open it wasnt because i had money stashed .it was because my sponsor at the time borrowed my at the time life savings of 44,000 for a one month business deal.
it took me a lawyer and 4 years to get the money back.
it ruined my pool game as i quit tourneys for 2-3 years and ruined my marriage.
so dont be talking like i tricked people into staking me, because my money was tied up for 4 years and i can prove it.
also i would bet efren has made more than jack white .
i like max but the reason hes broke is because he never played for money and hasnt won enough tourneys.
scott you do nothing but say negative things about proplayers and its getting old.
you know im not as entertaining as you but if i smacked you right in the mouth ,i know alot of pros that would find that very entertaining.
you have pissed me off with the whole get people to stake me and acting broke while i have money stashed b.s.
you need to know what your talking about you no talent fatass .
im done with the az insults. the next time i tell you off will be to your face thanks.
night night scott

why dont the trick shot guys match up. its because most of them are broke sad but true.

Come on John pick on somebody your own size! LOL

The main reason most champions don't match up is because they want to play for a ton of money they don't have. 5,000 and up matches are what the best players want but they need a stakehorse. Most stakehorse's have learned the hard way that they need to win 2 out of 3 matches just to break even (do the math). Knowing this and its a coin flip as to who will win will keep most stakehorses out.

Money is tight today and most champions won't risk loosing the little that they have (5,000 and up is alot of money to MOST PEOPLE including the Champions).

i hate to say it but its mostly ego and being scared to lose. many guys on tour are not broke and can get staked and will play nobody.its cowardly and im not gonna name names but many of the pros bet on football play poker and go off in casinos.when i ask them to play they say i dont play anymore, give me weight, they wanna fight etc.pathetic

John I think you are right on here. I thought this too but didn't have the guts to say this. As you know John this is at the lower levels of play also. Everybody likes to say he's better than another player but neither one wants to match up for the fear of loosing. So they just bark at each other.
