Why only 47 players at Valley Forge?

I don't understand why these type of events do not have full brackets!

High expenses (rooms and travel), high entry fees, and top heavy purses with only marginal pay outs are all reasons why many middle of the road (but still very good) players don't attend events like these. I suspect in this tournament you need a minimum of 7-8th place money just to break even on expenses. Only the very best (or wealthiest) players can afford to attend events like this.

In today's economy, if it isn't a good deal for the players (like in Reno two weeks ago), many of them will pass on playing.

pathetic

It's a testament to the sorry state of pool that there aren't at least 64 players who can come up with a minimum of $2,500.

well, which would you rather see?

47 players @ 1000$ or double that or more, at 500$?????

I mean if you had the entry @ 300$ and got 256 entries wouldnt that actually bring in more money????

I concur with your observation. This year's payout is double of that from last year but with todays economy it is very hard to come up with $3 Grand upfront for this tournament, and then have to worry about reaching at least 5th place to come up even or perhaps a little ahead.

1st: $20,000
2nd: $10,000
3rd/4th: $5000 each
5th/6th: $4000 each
7th/8th: $3000 each
9-12th: $2500 each
13-16th: $2250 each
17-24: $2000 each

Thanks for this breakdown, but it may be different (meaning quite a bit less) with only 47 players. I think you're going to have to trim $17,000 off the above to get the true prize breakdown. I doubt that 7-8th will pay more than $2,000, and they will probably only pay sixteen spots. I'm guessing 13-16th will be about $1,000 to $1,250. Let's see how close I come. One other thing, 3rd and 4th place should not be the same amount.

On second look, they can come close to this breakdown by paying sixteen places. By eliminating 17-24th they save $16,000. Knock 13-16th down to $2,000 and you have the right amount. Third and fourth are still incorrect though. If they take $2,500 off the top and add it to third, that makes first place $17,500 and third place $7,500. Do I think they're smart enough to figure that all out? Doubtful.

I was wondering what was going on. I'm at the money tables downstairs and don't see many pros at all. Some of the usual people like Charlie Williams at the predator booth, Jim Rempe doing cue repair, but no one walking the floors like before. Thought they were all just playing behind the curtains in the pro arena.

Jim Rempe doing cue repair?....really?...I missed that!

Holey sh*t I can't believe I said Jim Rempe! I apologize Gerry, it was someone else not Jim. Speaking of which, I didn't see Jim doing that Meucci demo he's done for so many years. Anyone seen him or Keith McCready? Those guys are usually regulars here at the expo.

I understand there's a sign-in for the AZer's downstairs somewhere. Just don't know where.

I saw McCready last night. He's in D.C., and he said he won't be going to Valley Forge this year. :grin-square:

This year, it seems that Jeanette Lee is the one to watch. The one thing I like about Jeanette is that she is not just another pretty face in the crowd. She can really play. I wish I could have sweated a few of her matches when she was in action with the Puerto Rican player.

Entry fee went up from $500 to $1000.

1st place is guaranteed $20,000

Hi, Tom. Is the 1st place still guaranteed with $20,000 if they don't have a full 64-player roster? I'm just curious.

I was very surprised that this did not fill up, like it does each year. Usually, there is a waiting list for the pro event.

Personally, I like the ProAm tournament. The entry fee is a little lower, and it still pays pretty good. Allen usually adds some money to the ProAm event.

Also, the trophies given out at SBE are the BEST I have ever seen. They are absolutely gorgeous. T

At the 2006 ProAm at SBE, Shannon Daulton and Keith McCready came down to the finals on the bar boxes. It was the best two out of three matches to win the money. Allen added 3- or 4,000 to first-place prize, which was quite attractive. I think first place paid out almost 6 dimes.

It was a real battle between Shannon and Keith. Both of them are good bar table players. ;)

During a smoke break outside, in the middle of their matches, I told Keith that I really, really wanted that trophy, that I didn't care about the dough. I just wanted that beautiful shiny trophy. :grin-square:

Before Keith could put his eyes back in his head at that comment, Shannon said to me, "Me too. I gotta have that trophy, and I'm definitely going to try to win win it."

So the fight was on to the finish, and the winner got the beautiful trophy. Every single tournament that year had a first and second place trophy, every one except the ProAm. Keith came in second place, but got no trophy. :embarrassed2:

Shannon loved that trophy, as did I. What a beauty! Keith was less than thrilled to have his picture taken by it. LOL!

StormHotRod300...They'd need 40 tables just to run a tournament with that many players. They only have room for 8 in the arena.

The WPC is played on 8 tables (at least the one I've been too back in '03) and you had 128 players.... it did take 10 days, but the last 3 days where not full time.

Maybe they should find a different place to run it.
The bad economy works both ways, you can find better deals on locations and other expenses.
