Why Was Johnny So Mad After The Final @ T.S.?

I played at turning stone and there was just way too many 9's made on the break. I had about 3 or 4 against me. 9's shouldn't count on the break and be spotted I think.

Well due to the time of day I had to do BBQ duty and I was in and out trying to not burn my chicken and also sweat the final. So I missed what apparently happened. However, based on what has been said I can still say this.

Johnny as we all know is a champion and a competitor, just like any other champion or competitor he don't like to lose. Put that along side with he may not have thought he played well and let himself down. If he was mad the chances are it was at himself not at Shane. If he didn't shake hands right away with Shane it wasn't out of disrespect for shane I can assure you of that. He has alot of respect for Shane and looks upon himself as a little bit of a mentor to Shane and shares his knowledge and experience whenever he can. Also based on the accounts in this thread it only took him a few seconds to walk around the table and congratulate Shane properly. Thats my 2 cents

Right....and in their prior match JA had a hair or something on the cue ball, and oddly tho a Very good show of sportsmanship, JA had SVB HOLD the cue ball in place while JA removing the spec, very classy, something I've Never seen before, I liked it.

I am happy to say that the videos of Turning Stone are still up and viewable.

At 1:53:20 you will see where Johnny left himself hooked on the one ball and he decides to attempt a three rail escape. He misses leaving Shane the 1-9 combo for the match.

Johnny, clearly frustrated, stays in his seat for a few moments then gets up and does a sort-of high five with Shane.

Johnny does a circle around the table and then shakes hands with Shane.

At 1:57 you'll see where Johnny is upset with some aspect of how the table played as he is explaining that to someone who places two balls in the jaw of the corner pocket.

Not liking to lose is a good trait.

He's right ! Two great competitors, and friends if I read it right. The best two players in the USA for sure. Johnny just didn't get all the rolls plus made a few key errors. At some point during the weekend Shane said he practices his break 5 hours a week. That's a dedicated young man and that greatly contributes to his being very tough to beat. Johhny hates to lose, always has, and this one he wanted I'm sure ! Only took him a minute to compose himself and shake Shane's hand. Great performance from two champions we can be proud of !

After all the play on the TV table, the cloth in the break area, gets allot more compressed and buffed and ball indents than any other area.

Bill, I know you have a deeper understanding of these things, but I'm not sure I agree with what was going on here.

I was there all day Saturday, and nobody was making much on the break on any of the tables. But then Kiamco made the nine twice in a row, and then put it in the jaws with the four right behind it for an easy four shot out. I believe this happened on table 5 in his win against Hohmann. The TV table was table 8. I think Warren and SVB just paid a lot of attention to where the balls were going and adjusted their breaks accordingly to dial them in. Nothing unsportsmanlike about that, you're supposed to be able to read the table well at that level.

I sat right behind Corey during his match with Hohmann on the TV table. He got such poor action on one break that he turned around and asked, "I don't know, did they move at all?" Both he and Thorston struggled with their breaks throughout the match. My wife was talking to Toastie's SO (quite a beauty BTW) and he came up and started chatting with them. He told her that all the tables were breaking really hard, and he thought it was the cloth. He said it was really hard to get a tight rack on this cloth.

I do know that the room is quite large and it was cooler in there than in the rest of the casino. It was also very humid outside. The fog was so bad Saturday night that we didn't risk the drive again on Sunday. Maybe the humidity was up there and the tables were playing slower than expected?

The way I see it is... Johnny had played well enough to get to the finals and was frustrated at the outcome. He'd played hard, gotten all the way to the finals and in the end the better guy won. For whatever reason Johnny just didn't have his A game when he needed it most. Playing at the level those guys play at is not easy and when they are off just a little the outcome is pretty predictable. Johnny and Shane are both classy guys, it's just the way things go sometimes..

Especially in the bottom two corner pockets.

It's actually funny if you watch matches from the 90's you see a lot of bad racking, where the 9 is wired for one of the corner pockets. I'm sure most of the elite players back then understood why this 9 would go for the corner pocket, but it seems like it still happened a lot back then. The commentators would often act like it was a borderline miraculous break, when in all reality anybody can do this if the balls aren't racked properly.

Towards the end of the SVB vs. Archer final I was wondering if Johnny was just ready to get out of there (I know I shouldn't have thought this), because all of a sudden that nine was heading right for the corner pocket. Sounds like this may have been happening a lot in this tournament.

I think the racks were much more interesting to watch because the players were not using a template rack, but it sure did make the racking take a lot longer and I don't like seeing that nine ball leak out straight for a corner pocket. So, I don't know what the answer is for racking 9 ball.

How about you have the opponent place the balls in the rack, but the breaker actually racks them and if the 9 ball goes in the bottom 2 pockets it spots? This avoids pattern racking and maybe it speeds up the process a bit.

Thanks for that Bob. It was even less of a deal then I remembered. There was definitely a high-five hand shake that Shane initiated while Johnny's head was down in a "did I just get drilled" position, then a look at the score during a walk around the table, and a second congratulatory hand shake.

The second hand shake is where I thought he was pointing to the corner pocket (the 9-ball pocket), but he was simply sticking his hand out.

Really nothing "mad" about it. {edit: Looking all the way to the end, he was pretty pissed, but I'm thinking frustration and tiredness}

I can't believe all you Archer fans trying to find excuses as to why Archer
lost to shane.! He lost to Shane because Shane played better then Archer
did! End of story!.

Funny , I didnt see anybody (Archer fans) making any coments as how
Archer won the first hill to hill match. whether He really deserve to win
that match after Shane had run 4 consecutive games to reach the HILL.

Did any of YOU see ARcher get mad when Shane left him the 1-9 combination? N0000......

Shane took it like a man and just contiue to play his game and came
back and won exactly like Archer won the first match. Right? RIGHT.

I like both players . In my opinion , ARCHER still plays great and still has
at least 10 more years to compete. Just My opinion. Bc

Racking at Turning Stone

Seems there were a few comments about racking and not being able to get balls tight etc.

Time for the Magic Ball Rack???

Zuglan has his ways and they usually work out for the better - but the players are supposed to have a tight rack.

Granted the wing ball will go in more often - but I read here that a ball was make over 50% of the time-and that is from the box.

I jsut think is should be looked at - because the MBR does give tight racks.

I was thinking the same thing. Shane had that great come back and then lose to a error on his part with the bad shot leaving the 1-9. Archer should of shot the nine in when he had the chance. Even if he hit the one three rails he more than likely would of left the combo anyway.

Maybe it's time for a break spot so players can't cut break, or a small break D area like snooker....

I wasn't sure either....Look at my first words in post 17....Table definitely played like it was humid. Both players worked the vertical middle of whitey and were very apprehensive to use ANY outside spin on the cue ball if it over 3' Away from the obj. ball. Reminded me of Houston.

I think the Magic Rack should be used in every tournament. If they're so worried about the wing ball being wired, rack it with the 9 on the spot.
