Wipe chalk off tip?

I always wipe excess chalk off my tip before putting it in the case, to keep the interior
of my case, and thus the shaft, clean.

A friend says don't do that, the chalk keeps the tip from drying out. "Ask any cuemaker."

O.K. I'm asking. Wipe or no wipe?

I always wipe my tip after playing with my shaft. Keeps things from getting too messy.

A team-mate wiped his before putting it away, but he was rather fastidious person.
* I'm sure you know chalk absorbs moisture. If enough is in the case eventually you could have a damp pad waiting for the tip.
* Chalk dust can migrate up the case tube and constantly dirty the shaft.
* Somehow I can't think of a reason to not wipe it other than a "I don't care".
* One could slip on a rubber tube, a mini plastic baggie & rubber band, or a slip on ferrule over the tip before inserting in the case.

Guess after thinking on this, I'm gonna have to change my ways.
Like joint protectors, mine will get a tip protector. Clear plastic tube I have in stock.

I actually bought a blue area rug that lives next to my table, bought specifically for wiping my tips before they go in the case.

ALWAYS WIPE ;)

You are over thinking it........... just put it in your case............

I have a towel on the side of my case and wipe the shaft upwards to the tip, then wipe the tip last. Been doing it about 17 years and have not had a tip dry out. It DOES help keep a clean case stay clean and a clean shaft to stay clean, and only takes 5 seconds to do.
I do a new tip for someone, slip it into their case, then pull it out to show them when they pick it up, and there is so much chalk in their case that the tip looks like it was chalked already.

Wipe it down. You do not want it in your case. Chalk is abrasive and can/will scuff up the finish on your cue.

Drying out your tip?
Chalk is very dry!

Wiping the chalk off your tip before placing it into your cue case is a good thing to do for many reasons.
Keeping it out of the grain of your shaft is just one reason.

I just place my cue tip down on the carpet and nudge it with my foot ... cleans it right off.
Case and shafts stay nice and clean.
Never had a tip "dry out" and dont really know if that is possible.

I wipe. Have ever since I was potty trained. Don't know about if the tip will dry out faster but it's not a concern. I go through tips before they will dry out anyway.

I wipe it off. I would rather keep my case clean.Besides, I replace my tip after 3-4 months anyway. I highly doubt the tip is going to dry out to an unusable state in that time

Wipe it off or why not put the shafts in the case with the tip up, no need for wiping and the case is clean.

1000 Grit Sandpaper

I make it a point to lightly sand my cue tips before putting my cue away and I use 1000 grit sandpaper. It lightly scuffs the tip surface area and removes all the chalk and any glaze so my tip is clean and ready to be chalked the next time I remove it from my cue case.

Not every case is designed this way. Mine, for example, is fitted and the tip has to go down.

Is it a lot of trouble for some to wipe it off? There have been enough reason to support wiping it off and no benefit for not wiping the chalk off. I cannot believe this thread has gone on this long...

It went on this long prob'cause people care to give GOOD advice.
Theirs always tricks that others haven't heard or tried.
I'm a convert to wiping but more than likely will find a suitable tip cover.
.. .. then again, I'm known to not chalk my tip more than twice a game... so there maybe no chalk left on it.

I lick my thumb, wipe the chalk off and dry it with a napkin.

Wipe my thumb off. Chalk doesn't taste very good.

Yes I know. Many are though and I see many of my friends have case that can work both ways but they still put the shafts in with the tip down, " like it´s the way you should do " sort of.

I use a JB case for my regular usage and it works like a charm:).
