Just curious... how much is the entry fee for the Main Event? How much is the entry fee for the satellites?

I think -- SUBJECT TO CHECK -- that it costs $1,000 for the satellite tournaments to the main event. The main event tournament is $10,000 entry fee, at least it was last year at Rio. We were in Vegas at the tournament last July, and that is how much it cost to get in, a whopping 10 dimes. However, there were numerous satellites going on, and the winner of those satellites get entry into the big one.

First of all, you guys blow me away with all the good wishes. Unfortunately, a set of Kings over my set of Queens sent me to the rail last night. The flop came K,Q,3. I had a Monster! He made a smallish bet to me and I raised him. He hemmed and hawed and then reraised me, and I put him all in, fully expecting to see A,K. He showed me K,K instead.

I thought about it afterward, and there was no way I could get away from this hand. Any poker player probably knows this. Oh well, I won a Satellite for a $1,000 Second Chance event tomorrow, so I ain't quite dead yet.

They only had about 5-6,000 players this year for the Main Event, considerably down from last year. Probably due to the fact that they didn't get nearly as many players from internet sites this year.

I did hear about the shooting at New York, New York. All over the news here. Luckily some military trained guy and a couple of off duty cops brought him down, when he was reloading. Otherwise, they may have been many deaths.

Thanks again you guys. As they say in Brooklyn, "Wait till next year".

That sucks to get pocket Queens beat!

However, you're still in this race if you get in via satellite. Good luck to you. Keith is envious and wishes he was there! :D

The main event was 10K, and the second chance events are 1K. I expect a 1,000 players tonight.

Jay,
What happened pre-flop and what were your table positions/blinds?

you can get away from that pot.....let yourself see the turn.

Just call his re-raise, or just make a mid level bet with your queens to begin with (instead of smallish)...fact is you didnt even have the nuts on the flop, and there was still a flush and straight possibility. Its not as hard to get away from as it seems, you might have gotten hurt (losing 50-75% of stack to see turn/river) but you may have convinced yourself out of the hand....

With jacks/queens, i like to hammer it a little pre-flop...if you push hard enough (~50% of the OTHER guys stack) and he's still in/re-raising....you can be sure your queens/jacks are beat.

I'm always willing to pay off AA with KK.

Good questions. He was in early position and bet four times the big blind. He was a medium tight player, so I respected his raise. Everyone folded to me in the cut off seat and I called his raise, wanting to see the flop. I saw it, and I liked it.

The blinds were two and four hundred and I had about 16K in my stack, and he had me covered. He bet 3K after the flop and I raised to 6K. I had committed about half my stack, when he reraised me all in. I thought about it for maybe ten seconds. I was pretty sure (99%) I had the best hand, and gave him credit for possibly having A,A.

I almost fell out of my chair when he showed me K,K.

Anyone know how many entries this year (Main Event) and what the winner receives? 7 or 8 Million?

Something like 6,500 entries and first pays 8.5 mil. Down about 2,000 players from last year. Far fewer internet qualifiers is why.

So yesterday I play the second chance event and I play for over eight hours. I get down to one table out of the money. The blinds are two and four thousand so people are pushing all in right and left, when they bet.

I am in the small blind and pick up A,Ts and everyone checks to the guy on the button, who pushes all in. He had just lost a big chunk of his stack but still had me almost covered. I had about 25K and he had about 21K. I KNEW he was on a steal (10K in the middle already), and I was right. I called him and he showed me A,6.

The flop comes with no match for either of us, and he begins the poker player chant. "6,6,6...". Naturally a 6 comes on the turn. Thank you Poker Gods! The next hand I pick up Q,J and throw in my last chips. The gal next to me insta-calls, and shows 7,7. The flop comes 8,T,K. I have a zillion "outs". Any 9,J,Q or A wins it for me. She is begging too (I hate this), and the board comes blank, blank and she whoops it up.

I finish seven out of the money, and it costs me a pretty penny to lose that one big hand with A,T. Poker can be soooo frustrating. I did get lucky in the casino though. I like to play the 100 play Video Poker and I threw a $100 bill into a machine at Caesars. I played .50 cents a hand, so I was betting a total of $50 a turn. $100 was good for two full plays. I hit four Aces on my second play for $1,000, and a little while later I made a Royal when I drew two cards to an A,K,T of clubs. That paid $2,000. I cashed out $2,500 winner, so I'm only stuck about 5K for the trip. ha ha ha.

Poker can really be a brutal game can't it Jay? I'll never forget the time I was knocked out of a tournament ten minutes in when I picked up KK and the player to my left picked up AA. You sound like a very strong player so don't get too down on yourself, there was nothing you could do in your situation.

We enjoyed reading about your poker trip to Vegas. Sounds like you had some tough beats.

I am not sure if you know this guy or not, but his name is Mike, and I can't remember his last name.

Everybody seems to know him in Vegas, to include the casino pit bosses. He's made it to the final tables and TV rounds several times. :D

At any rate, he's a short fellow, and looks just like and talks just like Joe Pesci. Very jovial guy and nice as can be. I liked him a lot when I first met him last year. We got a call last night from Vegas, and Mike is currently 16 in the chip-holdings, and there are only 600-plus players left in the event. Of course, Keith is already putting in his bite for a jelly roll for friendship's sake in case Mike wins the whole shebang. :o

At least you recouped some of your funds. Better luck next year, Jay! :)

How are my boys doing?

Jay, there are 3 pool players from Chicago there playing. Mike "Shoes" Gambony, Chris Gentile, and Steve the "Dasher. Any idea how they are doing?

There are still over 1400 players remaining. They played day 2A(yesterday) down to 350 and they will do the same for the 1000+ field for todays 2B. There will be around 700 left for day 3 tomorrow.

Thank you for the clarification. I got my information from a phone conversation actually, from a Vegas inhabitant who was attending the tournament at Rio, I think. He is the one who, in fact, stated Mike was 16th in chip-holdings out of 600-plus.

Thanks for sharing your great adventure, Jay. I don't know if I would have played your Q's any differently either, even though they weren't the nuts, I don't think I could've gotten off of them. Last time I played in Vegas, I lost my stack with pocket Q's...hit the top set on the flop, which also had a 6 in it, and another 6 came on the turn, got reraised, went all in, lost to 4-6's. That's poker. :p

no problem. I've got 3 friends that are still in the Main Event that are keeping me updated as well as Jeff from Cardplayer.Com. I have 25% of one of my friends, maybe he will win the 8.25 million for first so I will only have to work a couple of days a week.
