They will then be issued with a voucher which they can redeem at the vendor's stand. Monies owed to vendors will be available the following morning subject to a negotiable commission. This may be as low as 5% or up to 15% depending on goods/services offered.

Something Special - We are offering members of the public a chance to play a rack or two against a range of top professional players. This will be recorded with professional commentators and referees and we will produce a packaged DVD for you to keep. I guess you can call it whatever you want. Whether or not people recognize it is another thing. This happens all the time.

To me the closest thing to a world body in pool is the WPA. If they sanction a World Championship that is what it is. If not then it is an independent event that will stand on its own merit's. You just have to decide if you want to burn your bridges behind you. I can see a case being made both ways.

Personally I still cant get my head around doing anything in Nigeria but that may just be because I have a small mind.

No matter what you call it you have all the hurdles of a first time event in a third world country to overcome. One thing certain is that money talks and if the money is there you will get the players. What you do with it from there will determine how the event is perceived.

This is definitely one of the more off the wall promotions I have heard of and I have a real curiosity to see how it works out.

Doug,

When we spoke the other day I forgot to ask you if this event has a website as yet. If it does please post the URL of said site. I think it would ease the minds of a lot of folks if they could look at the host hotel, see the names of the sponsors so they can check them out, see the venue and look up the street address on google maps, etc.

Thanks,
Jerry

The website is almost ready to go live and should be online in about 10 days.
The hotel, the venue are in close vicinity and they are both superb quality places. The President's aides have requested that the tournament be named after their boss and I have agreed to this. We are in a fortunate position where we have a choice of sponsors and will deferring some of them over to next year.

This is an invitational is it not? Call it the the "world 9 ball invitational classic" (I don't know why classic but people seem to like that) or something to that effect, or "World Masters of 9 ball", or the "World Unsanctioned 9 ball Not To Be Confused With The WPA Event Championships".

All you have to do change the title somewhat so that it distinguishes it from the WPA event. At the end of the day, the field and prize money will decide which is the more prestigious event.

You said it was to be named after the president so name it after him and drop whatever to make the wpa happy. I'd like to play no matter what you call it bacause you've got a good amount of money in it. That's by far the most important thing.

Sorry you are faced with this dilemma Doug, you know I would have been with you on this one if it were not for prior commitments with my own federation.
When you started this project, I know you did it to resurrect the World 9 Ball Championship and at that time the fact that the Qatar Open was to become the WPA World 9 Ball Championship was not known. I know that you went to great lengths to ensure that there were no clashes with any other events and you have to carry on even if it means changing the title.
I wish you all the luck in the world and I am sorry I am unable to be there.

sponsors and WPA

It really comes down to what your sponsors will accept and if some players will be barred from coming if you call it a world championship. In my small state we had no less than four state championships for the same sport one year. Silly, but every location wanted the prestige of a state championship event. Actually the competitors wanted a state championship at the fourth site and he said the heck with it, might as well join the crowd of other promoters.

Will your sponsors or Nigeria be unhappy if it isn't called a world championship? Will players be barred if it is?

I would think that leaving World Championship in the title while adding Invitational might appease everyone but I don't know.

On 26th December the WPA announced that they would hold their World 9 Ball Championship in Qatar. Now, perhaps understandably, the Qatar Federation have taken umbrage with the fact that their event is not an exclusive World title. As a result the WPA have approached me to remove the words 'World' and 'Championship' from the Nigerian tournament.

Now I am faced with the same situation with my sponsors. What do I do?

I am basically supportive of the concept of a central governing body for the sport and to all intents and purposes the WPA fulfil that function. But there are areas of operation which I feel need to be examined.

Firstly, the Qatar event is scheduled during the timeframe of the World Cup of Soccer. This means that TV coverage outside of Qatar is likely to be non existent. The Nigerian event has no such hinderance and will be broadcast in Asia, Europe and Africa.

Next, there are differentials in the prize funds. $360,000 against $237,500 (after deductions). All the prize fund from Nigeria will be cleared funds 30 days before the opening day. The Qataris are honourable people and I am certain that they would pay but there is Prize Money still outstanding from another recent WPA Sanctioned event.

The Nigerian event has had invitations accepted from virtually all the World's top players, some of whom are not eligible to play in Qatar. But some players have sought advice from the WPA about whether they would be penalised if they played in Nigeria. To be fair to the WPA they have not implemented any ban at this stage but they may feel that it becomes necessary to do so to protect their events.

At the end of the day it will be the players who will either benefit or suffer from this situation. The irony of it all is they have no power to decide what they want or what is best for them because the WPA has no Player Membership category.

So what do I do? I don't want to undermine the WPA but I don't want to see this money go out of the game. My dilemna.

Hello Doug I don't think the name is a big deal because of the added monies the players will come. Also naming after the President that was very helpful to you and getting this event off the ground sounds like a great idea to me.

couldnt you call it the 2009 world 9 ball 'invitational' championship? that way it grants a champion for 2009, then in the next month the 2010 championship takes place.

Is this event still on? Is there a website?
The event was rescheduled to September because President Yar'Adua is in poor health. But it seems likely that it may be moved into next year because of political issues surrounding the President and his deputy Goodluck Jonathan.
