Everyone here seems to have keyboard morals. But most have another means of support. I would think amateurs would be more likely to do the "honorable" thing than a professional who expects his opponent to also be professional and know the rules.

I voted to keep the money. Pool is a game of physical and mental skills, one of which is knowing and following the rules. If my mental skills are better than yours and that is the razor thin edge in a very close competition then so be it. Next time bring your A game.

no doubt in my mind

Ok, here's the test for ALL OF YOU!!!!!!

(hypothetically speaking, of course)

You're in the finals or a HUGE tournament.

The tournament is call-shot.

1st place is $40,000

2nd place is $20,000

Its hill-hill.

Both of the players have been calling the 'money' ball ALL set.

Your opponent is running out.

He gets to the game, set, match and title shot.

He doesnt call the winning ball.

He makes it.

You know he DID'NT call the shot before pulling the trigger.

WHAT WOULD YOU DOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

(puts ear to the cmp screen)

No doubt in my mind, under the exact scenario you have laid out I call the foul. The important things I have marked in red. The match is hill-hill which means a lot of money balls have been obvious before this yet every one has been called following the call pocket rules of the event.

There has been no gentlemen's agreement in effect for this match. Every money ball no matter how obvious has been called. No mention if this money ball was obvious or not but it doesn't matter, the last shot is played under the same rules as the rest of the match.

If there is a ref I do like Neil and let him call or not call the foul. If it is my place to call the foul then I would call it just as I would expect it to be called on me if I had forgot to call the money ball. Indeed, had I forgot to call the money ball and then realized it after I shot I would call it on myself with no ref at the table.

Had there been a gentlemen's agreement in effect for the whole match then even if the ref stepped in and called it a foul when my opponent didn't call the shot I would have argued against the foul.

The whole match should be played under the same rules, written or implied.

I'd call the foul and then dance around the table and my opponent singing, "I just won $40,000, I just won $40,000, neh, neh, neh, neh, neh, neh!"

Is that unsportsmanlike?

YES, BUT ONLY BECAUSE YOU ADDED THE "neh, neh, neh, neh, neh, neh!"

Lol, I just watched the Biado-Pulpul ending and it looks like that's exactly what Pulpul actually did!

I agree!

I like your thinking and I think the opponent would understand if he has competed at any level regularly.

I was wondering about all the post that seem to say how fair and moral they would be..., well where are all the hustlers that usually post? You know the stories about beating tricks out of their money in games they cant win at?

If you have this choice to make, then YOU ARE THE REF, not the competitor, and you MUST impartially administer the rules rather than decide when to inforce them.

That was a bullshit move! It would never cross my mind to do that, not even if my opponent did it to me earlier in the match. Never! Having said that, there is a big gambling culture around pool in the Philippines, there was more riding on that match than the placing in the tournament. I don't know what I would do if I had people on my back, but that is why I don't gamble. You can clearly see more than just curious concern on the faces of some of the people in the video, especially that tall white guy in the background who was all up in the face of the Ref, he certainly seemed to have a lot of interest in and disgust over the situation. There was also some kind of melee off screen that was probably an argument over a wager, and Pulpul may have a sore person or two answer to, or maybe not. Just my observation, could be off base but whatever.

Depends on the opponent.

If it was that PULPUL guy, I would take ball in hand, call the 10, pocket it and say "I got lucky!"

If it was Efren, Shane or Ralf, Mika....
... I would take ball in hand and slow roll the 10 into the cushion, so that it'll stay right in front of the pocket!
Then I would shake hands for the winning opponent!

I not sure I understand?

What if the concerned look was from people who put this guy in the tournament and or bid for him in the Calcutta? I mean is it cool for my guy to not make the call if I paid $3,000.00 for him and the difference between him making the call and not making the call is $10,00.00 in my pocket!

Make the call and we'll give the guy a jelly to make him feel better, but don't take the cash out of my pocket.

I would let the ref make the call. If no call, then good game! If the ref calls a foul, I intentionally foul in return giving my opponent the game he already won anyway. I've done it before (not for that much money), and I'd do it again! I have self respect, unlike Mr. Pulpul, or whatever his name is...

Sometimes I read the league threads here on Az, even though they have little entertainment value or relevance to me as a foreigner, and I can't help but notice the pride some take in managing to find some kind of technicality in the rules that will allow them to win. Every time I read such posts I think that if I was playing on a team like that it may have turned me off pool completely.

Every one of us has done the childish thought experiment that goes: "Would you: (name something taboo) for x amount of dollars?" And then increase the dollar amount untill you get to your price. I think it is fair to say that almost everyone has something they will not do for any price, but then there are some who seem to price their dignity very "reasonably". Lots of them seem to be poolplayers as well...I consider that a problem with the sport, and not something to take pride in.

If both players have called the moneyball all set and decides not to
call it in the most important game of the set, then he deserves to lose
on a foul.
I'd be buying myself a dunce cap with my 2nd place money if it was me:)

For most players it really would not matter much because 99 percent of them would have the chop-chop going with this kind of money at stake.

yep

We all like to think we know what we would do, but none of us really do.

Slim

I'm with you on this one, Slim; I would only know what I would do when it actually happens.........

and here's another "what if" for all those who say they would not take the win;
what if the Ref calls it, and gives you the match and $40,000? Will you still say no, and give the $20,000 over to your opponent? (lol)
