No need to get fancy here - a simple kick-combo-bank-safety with throw gets the job done.

I see absolutely nothing that can go wrong with this shot.

If I were playing Tom Wirth, I would go for the bank, try to win it now,and at least having him up table with a ball in front of my hole.
No good deed goes unpunished
Tom takes poor ignorant Gold Crown and teaches him to play
Now Gold Crown expects to beat THE MASTER
When you can grab the pebble out of his hand grasshopper
This was my feel when I was planning a shot.
I just felt there must be some magical shot that I am too stupid to see. Feeling was so strong that I ended up making this thread..
It’s ok Dean... Tom understands you’re unemployed and on SS. He has easy terms. . I’m getting a senior citizen discount. I explained about Poor Lame Lamont.Way there, hold on,cease this silly talk about tom raising his prices
LOOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS ETC
Your ole pal in Dallas has yet to get his personal lessons
You are thinking about hitting your pal in the pocket book
below the waist,way below
I don't mind a guy getting paid more,
that is unless I am the one paying!
Yeah! I like Tom as well as the next guy,I really learned a ton
watching his tapes, reading his books and i am planning a trip
to florida for private lessons.
But this crazy talk about price increase is pinching my pennies
SORRY TOM,you know what a fan I am
this Gold Crown is just talking, you know, big talk
Pay him no heed, stay reasonable so I can win the price of a dozen
lessons back in a game or two
I need to talk to MR WILSON About getting a leash on Gold Crown
i love those pictures that show the pool table the balls and shot
i tried this shot, just banking pocket speed, always ended up near my hole and the opponent up table
once he had a shot, but it was long and thin
i think i would just go for my hole, unless i had a big advantage playing a weaker player and figured to win just by waiting like tom suggested

Well said
The best solutions when playing safe is usually found in the simplest of shots.
Tom
Of course that depends on the score. If I have a 60% shot that will leave me a good chance at a runout and no chance for a safe and I'm trailing 6-2, I shoot the flyer.... If one is to play at a high level, his choices need to be approaching 100% execution success rate.
Good thread, Poolmanis
When I saw the back bank on the 5-ball as my first choice, the table I had to play it on
was a Diamond with new cloth.
On every other table in the room, I like BBB’s choice...cross bank the 1-ball with inside....
...bring whitey two rails to finish near your opponent’s pocket.
I wonder how many players have gone broke because they saw TRex play?....![]()
Clip off the 5 with right English. Leave the cueball on the bottom rail. It’s normally a safe place to leave people.
The bank cut is thinner than 1/8 ball - I think it has to be hit too hard.I do like the bank on the back ball as long as I have the proper angle. I'm just not convinced this is it.
Lotta places on the bottom rail where you leave various thinner cut straight backs and two railers that play pretty safe.
One has to be VERY precise in where they leave the CB when thinning the 5 and either trying to get near the opponent's pocket or leaving CB on top rail. Any thinning of the 5 pushes the head ball either straight up table or slightly towards opponent's side.
Leaving the CB near the opponent's pocket leaves a natural bank on the head ball from wherever it gets pushed on the safe. Leaving it on the top rail only works if you keep him off this bank. And if you get him that far over on the head rail to where the head ball blocks the bank on the 5, he now either has a two railer or a three railer to his hole, with choice of where to leave the CB.
For all the above reasons, I like the shot mentioned before, banking the head ball over to your side and bringing the CB back up table near your opponent's pocket.
I just don't much like anything that involves hitting the 5 first, because it just feels like it has to give the opponent a free shot. A free shot is a free shot, whether you are frozen to the rail or not. I've always been amazed at how much straighter those old duffer One Pocket players shoot when the shot is free.
I actually shot this shot after it was mentioned and if you hit it with just enough speed to bank the 9 across your cue ball comes up short and leaves a shot on the 5. Personally I’d rather have them shooting the long rail bank of the short rail than the cross corner on the 5.
