Your favourite Earl Strickland quotes

Playin in Los Angeles in the early nineties he misses a ball because someone took his picture then says " I can't believe he flashed me"

"At one point, trailing 5-3, Strickland responded angrily to Tabb?s suggestion that he quiet down by telling her, "You shut up."

Incredibly, using the mechanical bridge, Davis rattled the 5 in the jaws of the same corner pocket, prompting the emotional Strickland to leap from his chair, strike a Tarzan pose and proclaim to the crowd, "He dogged it!" (This is from the picture when you can see him screaming out loud raising his cue. Imagine doing that when your opponent miss?!?!)"

I saw this one live in Cardiff 2003. and if you were there... man.. Earl really got too much batting from the crowd. It was Earl against the crowd. Tabb and Davis was not there.

I felt for him then, it may be the only time but I really did. He has been out of line a lot, but in this match he hadn?t.

"People" was standing up and laughing at his misses.

AZB: Last season, the best you did were a couple 9th place finishes. This year you have won 2 events already. What are you doing differently this year as compared to last year.

Earl:Well, I've been working on a few things. I've been practicing more for one thing. This game takes a great deal of practice, kind of like golf. I've tweaked my sticks a little bit too. I've changed the size of my shafts, changed tips, and did a few things here and there with the sticks. A few subtle changes in my bridges, stances and grips. Just trying anything to try to get back to where I used to be.

AZB: I wouldn't think that the size of the shaft would make that much of a difference.

Earl: Well, it's just like Golf or anything else. Maybe a lot of these guys aren't as picky or technical as I am with the shaft and the tip and the weight but it's a lot like other sports. You look at Sampras with a tennis racket, I mean he has got that thing tweaked just the way he likes it and that's the same way I like to have a cue. And a golfer is the same way. They are gonna tweak a golf club to get it as close to what they want as far as weight and the flexibility of the shaft and the length of the club and the way the club is set. There are so many different little things that I have got to have just right now. Years ago when I was younger, I don't think those things came into play as much. You get a little older, you need the stick to be pretty much right on cue.

I guess it's not a 'quote' but I remember when he mock snoozed through most of his match with souquet, even going as far as to not look up when it's his turn to shoot and having to be nudged by a spectator. I do remember him giving souquet crap for fidgeting, something like "they should have some kind of glass tube that drops from the ceiling and encases the other guy while you're shooting".
------
Earl loves to talk about martians:
"I?m alone out here... the people booed me when they were practicing the introductions. That?s disrespectful. I don?t care that I?m playing a national hero. I don?t care if I?m playing a Martian, I deserve respect."

Check out this youtube... wtf are they saying?

At the end of the match earl argues with nick van den berg saying something like "hey, you can't do that." [something something...] then "you wanna do something about it? Come on, do something! Do something." (LOL - LET'S TAKE THIS TO THE PARKING LOT). Something else about "you know why [something]? Cuz you got [fools?!] for people. You got fools for people. You see any fools hanging out at the pool hall?" I can't tell what's up with this. Maybe some weird reference to accusing him of having buddies in the crowd shark earl? Or his fans must be dummies to be rooting for nick?
Finally... he calls nick a JERK. When someone came over to intervene earl says "the same people..." then "the guy was running his mouth." He made an insincere apology right after and nick says "no, don't say that" and earl's like "ok then!".

Someone implied it was about not looking at him during the handshake, giving him a dead fish shake I guess. Funny about earl, he's on video going up to a guy and looking for the shake after winning and saying "what, no handshake?!" (earl was giving the guy some hell earlier)but he's also on video refusing to shake with souquet leaving ralf with his hand in the air.

I was a referee at the IPT in Reno and I ended up with Earl in my section two times when he lost. The next time we met I happened to be his referee on the TV table. As he was racking at the start of the match, he looked my way, shook his head and said "some referees just bring bad luck"
And then he lost.

Earl is a poster child for the saying, "Do as I say, not as I do". During his match with BJ he was constantly complaining about BJ taking so long to rack and talking while he was shooting. But when BJ verbally defended himself, Earl acted all butt hurt about it.

???????... I was there also and this is not how I remember it. I mean, I think it was as much Earl as the crowd in the war..

Earl's verbal assault on Michaela Tabb was viewed by people in the tournament office with shock and horror. The concensus was that he had gone too far over the top this time and should never be invited to any future Matchroom invitation events.
A few minutes later the phone rang. It was Matchroom supremo, Barry Hearn: "That's the greatest 15 minutes of TV we ever had. Make sure Earl's in everything next year"!

But I did chase Earl up to apologise to Michaela and buy her some flowers and 'fair play' to the man, that is exactly what he did next morning.

and I believe the crowd was at least as much for Davis as against Earl, but you are right, it really was memorable..

lol!

Last year at WCOP, it was rumoured that Matchroom wanted to sign contract with Earl&Rodney. I wonder what caused they (Matchroom) didn't want to gamble anymore, even as it looks they have been winning..
Maybe it's the self pity which Earl has been pulling of lately, instead of these outbursts.. lol

I was running a 9 Ball tournament in Fujairah in the UAE. It was the quarter final stage and Earl was playing Fabio Petroni. He had built up a 7-2 lead but Fabio started to come back. The score reached 7-6 when Fabio took a bathroom break/time out. The tournament rules only allowed each player one time out but they had played each other the week before in the US Open where the rules allowed two time outs so there was some confusion. As Fabio had returned to the table I informed him that if he required a further break he would have to forfeit a rack.
He did take a further 'call of nature' break and Earl protested "Where's he going now?" Fabio accepted the forfeited rack and went on to lose the match. But in the final rack Earl cleared the table to the 8, whereupon Fabio conceded the match. But Earl decided that this was not to his liking and wanted to pot the final 9 Ball. This he duly did but would not offer his opponent a parting handshake.
However, Earl's progress in this tournament was brought to a grinding halt in the semi final next day when it took Efren Reyes a little over 30 minutes to demolish him 11-0.

But i must continue, that last year at WCOP I spoke with Earl a lot, and I really liked every moment of it. I found out that in a way he really is a "good guy but misunderstood", but he cannot blame anybody but him self for it, and until he realizes this, he doesn't have much hope, IMHO.
I felt sorry for him when he went for these self pity scenes, but after the final I felt even mor sorry for Rodney..

He is actually him self, misunderstanding himself, the most..

I'd have some nice quotes from him also, but I'd have to dig them a bit from my memories..

Earl is playing George Brundt in Raleigh in the '90's. They were booking the matches at a table close by. In a race to 11, EVERYONE bet that George would 9. When he did, the place erupted. The score was 9-9. Earl says, "Why won't they make a line where everyone would bet on me?" Out of the crowd, an old guy shouts that "Noone would bet on you anyway, you're an asshole." "I'll kick your old ass." Earl comes back. I fell out.

I Was Playing 14.1 With Earl Before The World Tourney In In Nyc And Earl Says To Me....pat, If I Really Wanted Or Liked To Play Strait Pool I Would Be The Best Player That Ever Lived Bar None, Mosconi, Crane, Any Of Them! I Say ..how Can You Say That?! He Says....i Know More About Playing Pool Than Anyone That Was Ever Born! I Just Dont Like The Game!...hell Maby He Is Right...atleast In His Own Mind...

Overheard at the 1999 WPC in Cardiff, Wales. Earl was addressing a room full of spectators "You people don't know when to clap. You don't know the difference between a good shot and a bad one."

Earl was warming up for a touney in Athens, GA. and turned around and told the spectators, "..they could eliminate all the Phillipino players by just raising the tables 2 feet. They are all standing straight up and shooting while the rest of us have to bend over to shoot."

Southpaw

Well I read all 7 pages (I couldn't make myself stop) I might as well post a couple;
While drawing Alex 1st round in NY Earl says "If I went to Mars I would draw a Philipino 1st round"
My favorite and its true. In his best southern accent "The daam crowd needs to be educated"
That one sticks in my head every time they clap for the wrong reason and take great shots for granted.

Earl The Pearl

Actually,

I think he should bend down really hard and kiss his as*, and be thankful he plays a well as he does.

Wouldn't we wish we could do the same...............with some modesty :)
