Your man in Manila

too bad about John, as great a player as he is, he doesn't seem to be very
motivated
Considering you do not know him, it's interesting that you think you're qualified to make that kind of judgement.

What's important to John and his life is of no concern of yours or mine. The polite, humanly way to act is to wish people the best and when someone says they have personal reasons for doing or not doing something, rerspect that.

Hey Timby, are you not the gal who was making racist remarks towards
the fillipinos a while back?
I have NEVER done that. Quote it and provide a link to the post.

You serve no purpose here but to judge good people negatively that you don't know and stir the pot.

You're not worth my time or energy so you're now on my ignore list. If you ever find that non-existent thread where I made racist remarks (you're a really low & pathetic person for trying to start such a rumor about someone) be sure to PM it to me because from this moment on, I will not be able to see anything that you post.

excellent, everyone should know that you refer to them in a less
than flattering way, in person no less

Children! Children!

Stop hijacking my thread.

I'm trying for the second time to post from Manila. My first post disappeared into the ether.

Flew in today. The Philipines is lush and green until you approach Manila. Then you see this huge brown, gray cloud hanging over the entire city. I remember that this is one of the most polluted cities on Earth. Pollution control is non existent here.

The PICC is a huge complex and the tournament arena is quite impressive. They have two TV tables. Four other tourney tables are on the second floor. They really need to add two more. Maybe next year Luke Riches (TD) says. The Group stages will continue thru tomorrow, and the Knockout stages (final 64) begin on Wednesday.

Let's test this post so far.

OK so far. Looks like Efren will sneak into the next round based on total games won. He, Tony Crosby and Roy Apancho from Indonesia all tie with two wins. But Crosby loses out on games won. When Efren plays, the TV arena is packed with his admiring fans. After the match, he holds a press conference, and several local TV stations interview him. The man is a genuine superstar here.

Just watched Thorsten beat up on Edwin Montal 8-2. He is a stud, with his black pointed cowboy boots. How he plays in those things I have no idea. But he just kicked some ass. He, Rodney and Mika are impressively well conditioned athletes. They're going to ruin the image of all the overweight pool players.

The Group stages go on one more day, but several notables are done. Ronnie Alcano, Antonio Lining, Alex Lely and Robb Saez will not get thru. I'll update this list later, and add the names of those who are thru to the Knockout stages (final 64).

John Schmidt was invited but chose not to come for undisclosed reasons. A Protest was filed by the Chinese contingent against Earl and he escaped with a warning. Following his match with Ying Chen, Earl had seen fit to throw his shoe at someone. Yes, I said his shoe. Just another day at the office for Earl.

Big buzz here about the IPT. The top players are feeling insulted about the one-third buyout offer. Many like Ralf, Charlie, Mika and Rodney want FULL payment for Reno, and will settle for nothing less. Believe me, they are PISSED! In private they are not so reticent to speak their minds. KT is not going to slide thru here unscathed.

More later.

A Nice Match

The tables are tight 4.25"Brunswick Metros. They play good. Good refs (all filipinos), as good a crew as I've seen at any major Championship. This is the first time playing Alternate Breaks all the way thru.

Great arena announcer John MacDonald and LIVE Coverage on ESPN Star. All in all, the best show in Pool!

Just watched the Mike Davis-Marlon Manolo match. Will give you a recap in the next post.

Helluva Match

Interesting match-up here. Must win for Davis. He has a loss already. If Marlon wins, he advances. The arena is nearly full, all filipinos and me. Mike looks around the room at all the filipinos and then he looks right at me and smiles.

Quite a contrast in styles. Mike has this long, open awkward looking stance. Add his long up and down stroke and he looks like just another league player. Until he starts running out every rack.

Meanwhile Marlon is totally un-filipino looking. His stroke has none of that flowery up and down action that we are used to seeing from a filipino. Actually he looks more American in the way he strokes his cue. Had trouble putting my finger on who he reminded me of. Then it came to me. The late Tony Ellin. Short, stocky, shirt askew. Marlon even eyes the table like Tony and gets down like him too.

Next post to come.

Thank you very much for this Jay, much appreciated! Please keep them coming :)

Marlon-Mike, Chapter two

Davis powers out to a 5-1 lead, playing perfect Pool. Several of the filipinos have begun to leave. Mike makes a bad safety and it costs him two games. 5-3.

Marlon is so, so SOLID! IMO one of the top five poolplayers in the world. Mike has a jump shot, and the jump cue looks like a toothpick in his hands. The man is massive.

He makes the jump but misses a long straight six. Uh oh.
5-4. Marlon has a long four down the rail and he misses too. They're human after all. 6-4 Davis.

Mike's jump cue fails him. Marlon gets out for 6-5. Marlon misses a very difficult four down the rail and Mike gets out for 7-5. He needs one game.

Mike breaks and makes two. He's running out and over hits the six. Oops. Marlon gets out for 7-6.

Marlon breaks and runs for 7-7. Mike breaks empty for the first time. Too bad. Marlon makes a masterful run out of a very tricky rack. He's a great one all right. His first lead of the match is for the win 8-7.

That's all for tonite.

Jay, a suggestion for the video feed (computer image). The cue ball being white sticks out easily but its impossible to guess which ball they must shoot first and which side that ball needs to be contacted on.
On the overhead shot (telepromter) I suggest a small red dot if front of the contact area of the lowest ball on the table.
The after rack edited version at the end of each game is a nice feed. Whats missing......they don't show the incredible defensive shot or kick shot that sometimes is the best shot in the whole match.
With the alternate break the chances of seeing the incoming player roll out are interesting. I noticed its "all ball fouls"??

Jay, this is AWESOME STUFF!!!!! KEEP EM COMING!!! Get the scoop on the money games too will ya!

One Side Cafe

Had to drive down a narrow street to get here. The street is lined with clubs, and girls parading out front. They are young, pretty and alluring. And they are EVERYWHERE. But I have been forewarned by my guide, the one and only "filipino Gene". He is the first great filipino player to come to the US, over 40 years ago. He played mostly around the Bay area (SF) and was a noted money player. He beat many many guys, and no one could beat him shooting behind his back.

I have known Gene for a zillion years and was surprised to see him at the Convention Center. He told me he has been back in the Philipines for eight months now. After he bit me for one bean, he became a most gracious host. I could see that the young players look up to him. America and its riches are their dream. All the good young players are poor kids from the street.

Lost another long post. This is not a perfect system. Can be frustrating to write for 15 minutes and have it all get wiped out. My best work down the drain. Oh well, I try again.

Hey Jay... what do you look like? hehehe... Im there almost everyday...well, except yesterday. I will be back there today.

Maybe I'll put a small sticker on my shirt with AZB on it so that you'll know I'm an AZB'er.
