your opinion on gambling ethics

Me and my friend play 2 guys scotch doubles 10 ball giving up last 2 for 50 a man, race to 7. Friendly game, player a plays a little under my buddy, player b plays even with my bud, but less then me.
Note: player a was the one barking at me to make a game before we started, he has the money and was staking them.
So they drill us the 1st set 7-1. We pay and flip the coin, we beat them the 2nd set 7-4.
So now player b unscrews and says he's done, evidently its his birthday and his wife is with there group. We didn't know about his birthday and there was no stipulations about how long we play. So I think this is nitmanship at its finest! We could lose 200 possibly, but win 0! And in this case lose 100, but win nothing.
So I say something to them and player a gets pissy, its his b-day blah blah blah, then flashes me his bankroll and says I will gamble. So he agrees to play my friend getting last 2. When I say race to 9 for 200, he gets pissy again about amount, and quits. Dickhead, after flashing me his bankroll.
How would you feel? I'm done with these 2! BTW, I know player b well, not so much with player a

You and I have different definitions of "friendly game". I think a friendly game means quit whenever and no hard feelings.

I know this

It's all bravado for most when they flash the cash, but some will throw down.

If you don't keep it friendly you won't ever get deep into their wallet. So if winning money is your goal, it's best not to become aggressive.

BTW their are no gambling ethics, or certainly at least no violations here. If you matchup with a guy who is out to screw you, how does your being ethical help?

All I know is that you need to protect yourself by:
-Not losing significant amounts to an opponent who doesn't have or isn't willing to lose the same amount. Especially when they will play lock artist and never let you win it back.
-Don't back anyone you wouldn't trust with your life, too many dump.
-Try to get opponents to commit to 3 sets, or best of matches for __ amount. I just hate playing for hours and breaking even...pointless. Yet so many players consider coming back to even as winning.
-Always agree on who is paying time, winner, loser or split time.

OF course you didn't like it.

The AZB is littered with discussions on the topic, but as you said:
there was no agreement as to how long you'd play, so anyone can quit at any point.

In fact, the best pool player says you can quit in the middle of the set.

That last line was a joke, but what can you do?
1. don't lose
B. do the same thing to that guy, if you get the chance at some other point.

But a question for you. How long was he supposed to play?

There was no set time, I've been playing a long time and if I won the 1st set and lost the 2nd , I guarantee you I wouldn t have quit at that point! There is an unwritten ethics about gambling, ask any older players that have been around this game. This is about showing no gamble whatsoever, even if it was only 50 a set. A man. I guess this is the nature of players nowadays, play a set n win, then if you lose the second set, make an excuse, and quit! Basically saying , you can only lose to me and not win . lol pathetic
BTW, when I say friendly game, I mean that everybody knows each other, your still competing.

It's being a nit! Plain and simple, I've seen it before, I don't know why it surprises me. Lesson learned again. My bad

This stuff gets me everytime. In almost all cases it can be resolved beforehand by discussing how many sets, etc. will be played and such.

I wouldn't call playing a set for $ gambling.

It is a tournament with 2 teams, winner takes all.

To me "gambling" is a game of chance, horse or dog race is a gamble many times. Pool is a game of skill, and the one with the best skills normally wins. Predictable Outcome.

If I was to get in the boxing ring with Mike Tyson, it would not be a gamble. I for sure would get a beating, and in all likelihood go to the hospital. GAMBLE...NOT. Predictable Outcome.

Weight was given, it is gambling.

As far as your example.....if one of his arms were tied to his side would it be gambling then?

If you didn't set the terms and conditions beforehand, you really have no right to complain about anything.

Only reason you are complaining is cause you didn't get a chance to win anything after you broke even.

If you won both sets, I highly doubt you would be on here complaining about how this guy quit when he should have given you guys the opportunity to win a 3rd set.

People need to do away with that "unwritten rule" crap.

People can quit whenever they want.

What is so hard about getting everything straight before you start playing? It's because a lot of pool players are jones'n so bad to gamble they forget about the most important thing about matching up. Johnnyt

This pretty much sums it up.

Couldn't have said it better....

After you realized it was his birthday, go buy him a drink and be friendly. Maybe more action in the future at a better time.

Gambling is for folks without math skills. Gaming is what they teach at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Bingo!!

What do I think about gambling ethics? Same thing I think about ghosts, unicorns, and virgins. Don't believe in em til I see them for myself!

Yep

I was thinking the same thing.. Its hard enough around here getting ANY action, even $5-$10 sets (not games, sets...). I have to resort to giving insane weight (last night I gave a 5-2 race, AND 4-1 on the money), just to play for something...

Be nice about it, wish the guy happy birthday, and lighten his pockets next time..
