From Cutbacks To Increases – EPBF Prize Money Booms Under Predator Partnership

AS THE EURO Tour enters the second year of its landmark partnership with the Predator Group, the impact on European pool is already impossible to ignore. Only a short time ago, discussions centred on reducing Men’s prize money from €45,000 to €40,000 per event. Instead, the opposite has happened. In the very first year of the Predator partnership, Men’s prize funds increased to €50,000 per event and in 2026, they rise again to a record-breaking €60,000 per tournament. The Women’s EuroTour has seen an even more dramatic transformation. Previously competing for just €6,000 per event, women players are now playing for a […]

New Room in San Francisco's Mission district called 'The Hall'

Wow, everybody here who's talking 💩 about SF and a new pool hall... you guys are a bunch of ninnies. Where's the love and support for the growth of our sport?? I used to work down army, I mean Ceasar Chavez... that area had blown up since the new stadium.

I always played at palacade billiards on Geneva and mission. Parking sucked but it was a great place in an old theater. Still is. San Francisco is a changed town, but at least pool is still alive. I heard Family billiards is set to close in the future which is awful, but at least there's something new.

Most yuppies aren't going to an old school place like palacade, and Family is a bit on the serious side for the real players. It can be intimidating. This new venue looks like it will appeal to the up market techie crowd, which hey, they got money to spend and they want a fun place to be. I get it. Pool regulars are generally cheap basterds, so it makes sense to me to go upscale. I hope they stay open long enough for me to visit next time I'm in town. I just missed them as I was there last month.

I prefer the older establishments like the Jointed Cue, but that vibe is not for everyone. Sometimes it takes a shiny new place to attract paying customers. Glad they got SVB down to play.

Now stop being a bunch of nits, and go support your local pool hall!

2026 CTPBA Pro Tour Grand Finals 5-6 Jan2026

you play 9b long enough and the rolls even out. trying to erase all luck is ridiculous. Hell, the game is about colliding orbs, think there's not gonna be some luck? Don't hear the peanut gallery whine when someone 'flukes'( polite term for 'pureshitshot') in snooker but in pool someone has to bitch.

it's the same stupid stuff in snooker. stuart bingham is nicknamed "ball run" (fluke) because he is seen as luckier than others. you don't need a degree in statistics to understand that luck evens itself out

NAPA Pool League adds One Pocket to its format

I think it'd be a pretty awful feeling to lay down a perfect break and uh oh a ball goes in. Now you got a break again. And on your second break the cue ball catches the end ball and sells out. I can see the point of it other than it happens so rarely and it's not like 9-ball you're an automatic winner. Now if they want to take the nine on the break out and just spot it and continue to shoot I'm all for that.

I never did like the nine on the break winning and especially not in a hill-hill game. I think if a game goes Hill hill you should have to win by two.

I was once at a Grady Matthews tournament where they did play you had to win by two. One of the matches was Mike Siegel and Buddy Hall. It went back and forth with I think Sigel won 25-23.
The crowd never moved this was one of the most exciting matches I've ever seen as they kept getting on the hill and then the other guy would tie it up and he'd get on the hill and the other guy would tie it up.
It's kind of one of the nice things about pool is you don't have to live and die by specific rules. Promoter can put on a tournament having break from the box having break from the rail win by two race to seven race to 13 plan anyway you want I like that.

I will add that in a double elimination tournament I don't like the loser having to win twice. As I see it the winner's bracket and a loser's bracket are almost like two separate tournaments both with winners that now playoff for the title. They should play maybe extra long match. Which is commonly done now.

you’re not wrong, it sucks to break and make a ball and then break poorly. but at least you get a chance. if you break poorly thats on you. If your opponent breaks and runs you just sit there and say good shooting.

They both have pros and cons no doubt. i’ll play either way that my opponent wants to play, though.

i will also add that i mostly play on a permaracked table so making the corner ball with a second ball break isnt terribly difficult.

Great Pool Room Stories

How Good was Minnesota Fats?

Anyone that saw the videos when Fats played on TV would think that Fats couldn't play at all.

There is a YouTube video dated September 30, 2024 posted by Jim's Place Billiards where Nick Varner talks about playing Fats.

Nick says in the video that when he played Fats in the 1970s he could maybe give Fats a ball or two.

In the video Nick also tells John Schmidt that Fats beat Ronnie Allen, Ed Kelly and Richie Florence out of $100,000 trying to give Fats 9 to 8 playing One Pocket.

This is a link to the video.
