From "aim by feel" to "aim at a point"

I am not an instructor, but I do have a reasonable amount of experience with aiming at a specific point after estimating the cut angle. I suggest this link (https://drdavepoolinfo.com/faq/cut/estimating-angle/) if you wish to pursue aiming of this type. My method is on this page, credited to Dead Crab (my former AZbilliards name).

Conveniently, the aim point for cut shots is one millimeter off the center line per degree of cut angle. It is more like 0.8 mm per degree past 30 degrees, but this actually helps compensate for throw, so if you aim a 40 degree cut 10 mm past the cue ball edge (~40mm off center) the ball will probably go. In short, if you get good at estimating the cut angle, you can get good at finding the correct aim point, and will make a lot of balls because of it.

Having said this, my confidence in aiming has not made me a good player. I sometimes think of myself as the king of the seven ball run, because this is about how far good aiming took me. What I have learned is that stroke and cue ball control are more important. With limited time to invest, I would suggest you concentrate on building a stable stroke. When you have developed a stable stroke, you may want to experiment with aiming based on cut angle estimation. When you get good at that, start playing six ball, which will help you focus on cue ball control.

Well, now I've went and done it.

Did something similar to an original 314 shaft a couple years ago. Was trimming the tip sides to match the ferrule with a razor blade, it jumped and I hit the ferrule. The upside of not working on other peoples stuff, it was my shaft. I wouldn't want to have that conversation.
Up to now, I have really limited what I will agree to do on friends and friends of friends shafts. I will replace tips, ferrule and retaper wood shafts to a certain point.
Carbon shafts, just my own for now. Looks like I need to order one of those smaller boring bars to fix this shaft as the ones I have, I don't think are small enough.
This fix looks to be simple actually, I just need to order some materials, not sure if hydex or tomahawk, guess it really doesn’t matter that much between the two.

Mosconi Cup 2025, Dec. 3-6, Alexandra Palace, London

Have wanted to go to the Mosconi Cup for 20 years, and finally I had the chance. Only went one day though, but it was awesome, and will definitely go back another time. (But hopefully they will find another venue than Ally Pally, which is far away from everything)

The atmosphere and noice is NOTHING when watching on tv compared to feeling and experiencing it inside the arena.

I was blown away of how loud and tense it was.

Hats off to the players who manage to make balls in that setting. You can see they are very nervous and feeling the pressure on every single shot.

All in all a great experience, but it was definitely poor sportsmanship from the crowd on the 9-ball the seconds before Tyler missed against Moritz.

On all other shots the crowd quieted down, but I think it just got out of control on this 9.
I see people blame the ref, but he actually tried a few times to calm down on that show but with no luck.

I guess it would not have happened with any other players, but when the crowd saw the awkward position on the nine everyone felt that this was another miss coming from Tyler.

It was not an option for the ref to reset clock, stop Tyler and ask the audience to be quiet, and then let him shoot. Had he missed then everyone would definitely have blamed the ref.

Just poor sportsmanship from the crowd - on that particular shot. Otherwise I felt it was all good.

The level of play has been great, and the score could and should have been closer. Three matches ended 5-4 to Europe, after USA missed. So instead of 8-3 Europe it could have been 5-6 USA.

I am all Europe, but I really wish USA will win next year.

The Mosconi Cup is great, but if Europe keeps winning every year people will lose interest

APA League Question

That’s what I said lol re read it 😂😂 And I’ve been to nationals twice for masters so I’m well aware how it works.

To give you an example this year when we won to goto nationals our apa masters league fell apart and we almost didn’t have a league. They wanted us to drive over an hour away to play in another areas masters to stay qualified and I was refusing. I was fine not going to Vegas again. It sucks now anyway lol why should I be out of my trip to Vegas because the league fell apart. I understand in the rest of apa you need people to keep playing so their handicap is proper but masters has no handicaps . So to me it’s just a money grab and I wasn’t going to do it. In the end they scraped together enough teams to keep it together for one more session
I like the Master's format, but my area doesn't have a Master's league either. I've played in a couple Master's tournaments with a couple friends from our league, and I believe that they treated those like qualifiers for the trip to Vegas, but it was in combination with one or two other adjoining APA leagues that also don't have Master's leagues. We did well, but just not quite well enough, LOL.

I think there are some work-arounds that the national people, and the league operators, can put together, especially for situations like yours. Don't really know for sure though. I'm not a league operator, and don't know much about that aspect, but I know my league operator puts a lot of time and effort in. For Master's part of Vegas, which was in April/May, I was there as a referee, but I was assigned to the mini mania area so didn't even get to watch much of it.

New 1P Rules For The Derby City Classic

Can't believe they over-ruled all those elite top 1pocket legends they caballed with and finally just listened to us bangers, lol.

Previously on General Hospital: "Steve McD. at Diamond said: at the end of an inning if more than four balls are in the kitchen ALL of them spot. He said its purely due to time constraints. He's fully aware that some purists are hot but that's how they're gonna do it. They want a more offensive/aggressive game to speed it up. I also asked about a clock and they looked it and came to conclusion that it wouldn't stop the up table play which was their main concern. Said the rule changes at the 2/3 hour point weren't doing enough. Nice guy, fast replies with well explained answers. He said they got together with numerous top 1p legends when doing these changes."

is it still the case that sky can send anyone he wants out there in singles? like svb multiple times?
No, Skyler gets to choose the order, but every player has to play 1 game.

So the order will probably be SVB, Gorst, Sky, Thorpe and Styer.

Maybe Gorst ahead of SVB, as Fedor is playing the doubles in game 1, so he will have a nice flow.

Rhino MUST

Well, here they are side by side; Must on the right, standard Rhino on the left. Not going to measure anything since someone else posted measurements. The tapers are very similar, at least to the naked eye. The Must does have a a bit more forward balance.

That being said, the Must is going back. Screwed it on the Rhino cue butt and when I rolled it on the table the forward section wobbles. Shaft rolls straight by itself, so most likely the joint pin hole is off center a few thousands, or the face of the joint was not "trued". Cue rolls perfect with the standard shaft.

This is the stuff we have to watch out for. While I think Rhino cues are a great bang for the buck, QC issues like these makes you think long and hard before going down the economy cue/shaft hole. Nothing wrong with using economy cues and shafts, but sometimes it is difficult figuring out what economy brand to choose. I would be very upset if I receive my Meucci Hi-Pro 1 with a wobbly carbon shaft, or a future Becue with the same issue.

Not so "Fast" Eddie.
All my Rhino's roll really true, including the Must I just got.. I doubt the pin hole is off center, most likely the face cut is not perfectly true.
I have to say I liked their original tip better than the one on the new Must shaft as the new one seems harder.

Mosconi Cup 2025, Dec. 3-6, Alexandra Palace, London

For those who say this is just an "exhibition," I say that's totally false. The MC is a real match with real emotions and a lot on the line. The money involved is just a perk. Both teams want badly to win, that is a certainty.
Here, here, Jay.

For some bizarre reason, there's a handful of people who come on to the Mosconi thread every year to deride the event as a mere exhibit that should not be taken seriously or even enjoyed. Like I said, bizarre.

Reminds me of sports fans who don't like soccer who regularly show up on on soccer chatboards to say that soccer sucks. If you don't like the sport or the event, why are you bothering in the first place? Why can't you just let other people enjoy what they enjoy?

They just can't help themselves. It's as if they have a dominant gene that compels them. Like baby turtles leaving the safety of the forest and running for the beach while predators swoop about. There's no stopping those turtles, no way no how!

Joshua Filler this week called the Mosconi not only his favorite event, but the most important event in pool. Who am I supposed to believe? Some random keyboard crank on a chatboard or the best player in the world? 🤔

Hmm. Tough choice, but I think I know the answer.

New 1P Rules For The Derby City Classic

It is an effort to improve. Might have to add chess clocks. A clock that would reduce the time per shot as the game progresses might be an option. Fewer balls on the table makes the play more obvious. Players taking twenty minutes to take the only possible shot is ridiculous. Five minutes a shot is more like up to ten because you are studying the table and considering possibilities when it is the other player's turn.

I think fast play to minimize the other player's time to think is a danger with a per shot clock but I don't think milking the clock when it is your turn is reasonable either. Nothing Diamond can do that won't change the game. Shrinking the field or having a minimum qualifying fargo are possibilities too. I prefer time limits.

We ALL would much prefer the cacophony to the sudden a-hole in our swing. We were pretty brutal on the Euros last year. Tyler has deserved the treatment and he knows it. He shot into the crowd willingly. Not sure why everyone here is having a fit about it.
I find the spectacle quite unappealing.

It is a classless and cheap attitude, inconsistent with the environment that certainly looks like a top-notch program.
