DCC or the World 8-ball Championship? What will the pros choose in 2010?

I just saw on the sportscalendar to EPBF, and then double-checked at the WPA, http://www.wpa-pool.com/index.asp?content=cal2005, and it now says that the World 8-ball Championship will be held in Fujairah 22-28 JAN 2010.

Derby City Classic will be held 22-30 JAN.

Great to see that the World 8-ball Championship will be back, but what tournament will the top pros choose?

I am pretty sure that the European's, like Niels Feijen, Ralf Souquet, Marcus Chamat, Darren Appleton etc will need to choose the WPA World 8-ball Championship.
 
In the case of Ralf Souquet, this would be particularly unfortunate, as he's earned about $50,000 total prize money over the last four Derby City Classics.

This shows why it's a good idea to become a sanctioned tournament at the level appropriate for the players you want to attract. It comes with date protection. Galveston has a similar issue.

The DCC is neither a BCA- nor a WPA-sanctioned event, so far as I know. The other way to phrase the question is why did DCC schedule itself at the time of the World 8-Ball Championship.

The DCC was sanctioned just a few years back. I remember watching it on the Sports Calendar then...

Guess they didn't want to pay the sanction fee, and now their dates are not protected anymore...

So when then did the WPA publicly announce this scheduled date for the 8 Ball Championship? Before or after the DCC did theirs?
 
Just heard that this probably will not be an issue and there is a good chance the World 8 Ball date will change. Let's hope.

There are presently two dates listed on the WPA web site for the World 8-Ball championships in Fujairah, one in January and one in April. The only press release that I see regarding the WC8B is that the 2009 event was delayed and would be rescheduled, but there was no announcement of a new date.
 
In addition to ralf, I am certain thorsten will play in the 8 ball WC. He came within a game of winning it in either 04 or 05, I forget. I know he wants to be able to claim an 8 ball title along with his 9 ball and 14.1 titles, more than anything.

Although they don't come to the dcc, but you will also see engert and ortmann there too, along with the top Chinese players.

The 8 ball title holds a lot of prestige amongst these elite players.

Joe_Jaguar...Greg Sullivan announced the dates for the 2010 DCC back in February, shortly after the last tournament ended...several months prior to any announcement of the WPA event.

Ok, hope it will be in April then.

I only checked Jan and Feb when looking at the calendar, and haven't checked for 2010 earlier this year.

Please, do not panic. I know that WPA schedule is hard to read and sometimes, down right confusing.

The first date set for World 8 ball is not "Confirmed", and it's written in Green. There is another date for the World 8 ball in April that is written in red. I believe, the promoters often have to submit for primary and secondary dates and that's what it looks like it's been done.

I am quite certain that the secondary date was approven.

When an event is sanctioned by WPA, large amount of added Money (somewhere about 10-20%) is paid for the sanctioning fee.

Greg Sullivan is a firm believer that all the money should go to the players, not some entity for just rubber stamping a sanction...

Greg is quite stubborn in some way, but hey, he used to be a player and been there and done that about showing up to an event and going home broke after cashing!

Do you blame him?

The event will be held in Fujairah from 4th to 10th April and there will be qualifiers before that.

BRAVO for Greg Sullivan! He's not the only promoter who feels this way.

Just another reason to love Greg Sullivan! And I completely agree... We've all seen some crappy "sanctioned" events so I don't see the use in it, other than you get to say you're sanctioned.

The DCC pays out every year and is always a great event. Why anyone would want to compete with one of the biggest and greatest tournaments of the year is beyond me.
