My take on Galveston.

All in all I had a fantastic time at the tournament. I got all of the autographs I went after. I was quite starstruck by the players that are there. I got to see Allison Fisher practice on a table adjacent to Efren that was a neat scene. I also had my cue retipped and watched some good carom action. I was fortunate enough to run in to some forum members and had some interesting conversation. I really think this first year is going to be a learning experience for them and they will come back next year with a drastically improved event.

If you live in the area its worth every penny of the 25 dollar entry. I plan to go at least two more times this week. Maybe I will see you there. :grin:
 
Thanks for the review. 25 dollars is a bargain. Maybe some day one of these tourneys will make its way to the mile high city.
 
Pleased to hear you enjoyed it. I regretted not being in a position to go, but am grateful to all those supporting this event in any way, as I hope it's a big success.

It's been one of the most fun times I've had around a tournament, and the high level of players is just incredible..... I hope this one takes off and doesn't ever lose momentum.
Few glitches to workout, but hey it's a first year experiment that is turning into a great success once they got moving.

The stream for the Efren and Earl match was much improved since yesterday. With some camera tweaking here and there it should be good before the finals of the 8 ball and 10 ball. Really all they need to do is straighten the cameras and rent a wider angle lens for the main camera. Not sure whats causing the blurry picture. Joey did a really good job IMO with the booth commentary. Next year this should be a big area of improvement.
 
I think what most people are calling "blurry" is actually a product of the compression being used. kinda like jpg's look great until you zoom in, "lossy" compression takes on a blurry look because the data is dithered down to a managble size(this varies according to many factors) It could be the resolution of the camera, but I would lean toward the codec

I agree the turnout of top pro players is incredible. :thumbup2:

I got to see some incredible one pocket matches and say hello to the pros while getting autographs as well.

The Gabe Owen's win in one pocket of Alex Pagulayan had some incredible shots in the last game.

I also understand they lowered the first place one pocket prize to increase the lower top prizes.

What I would suggest to improve this Tournament is to pick your top ten complaints and submit them in a constructive manner. I know I have some suggestions and will do the same.

On the tournament chart page they have the one pocket first place listed as $15,000. That is $10,000 less than advertised. $10,000 less than they swore up and down about for the last three months. I think streaming and scheduling glitches will be forgiven but chopping 10 dimes out of the first prize (if it is the case) is a bad move and will piss players right off.

I am happy this thing went off. I am even spending $900 to go down there. Partly for business reasons and partly because I want to see any gathering of elite players this size. It is a rare thing and one that should be applauded.

I really hope they don't cut the first prizes or cancel any more divisions. Players and fans will forgive many things but fooling with the money usually leaves a very bad taste in people's mouths.

Your probably right and while you can't please everyone I think this move was inspired by the players. The payouts were very low with first being 25k and players were standing at the board complaining about it. They stopped the tournament to have a players meeting and after they announced the new payouts many of the players seamed to approve. I don't know that's just my perception.

I can see that point of view. It actually makes sense. It is sad and ridiculous but it makes sense.

Good lord what a joke.

Since this thing started people have been asking the exact same question and they wait till after the event has started to decide "Hey, we are just gonna chop 40% off the first place and spread it around. " What happened to the claims of "Don't worry about the rest of the field. We will take care of it." ? I guess we know now how they planned on taking care of it.

Last number I got on the $50,000 first place team event was under 20 paid entries. That was yesterday and the tournament starts on Wednesday. After this move I am curious what that is going to turn into.

I guess I might as well shut up and follow the the standard "At least they are doing something." line. Which to a certain extent they are but after being beat up for asking these questions it makes a guy really want to say four words.

Bottom line I guess is that if the players were good with it then so be it.
 
Let me tell you about the prize money. First of all, if they had left the 25K on top, there would have been all kinds of dealmaking by the players. That's the reality. By spreading the money out, there will be considerably less need for that. What happened was they put it to a vote of the remaining players and all but Efren voted for the revised prize fund. So it was an equitable decision, ultimately made by the players.

MORE GOOD NEWS! The $25,000 Guaranteed for first place became ADDED MONEY! Yes, you heard me right. They added 25K to all the players entry fees to come up with the final purse. Pretty cool IMO. You will see the final payouts aren't bad. They did the same thing with the Women's prize money. Only Allison (and one other girl) voted against it. So in essence, all the guaranteed monies have become added money. The Ten Ball with 50k Added should be a huge event. If all the players had known this ahead of time, they would have had an even bigger field.

Joey turned out to be fairly prophetic about this event. As it turns out, they will be ADDING over $100,000 to the final payouts in all events. That's huge! I like this bunch of guys promoting the event. They are going out of their way to accommodate the pool players. Just last night Rodney was stuck at the airport, having missed the shuttle. Clark Rone got on the horn and sent another van back just to pick him up.

These guys will lose money on this event. No question about it. Whether or not they continue remains to be seen. They say they are in it for the long run. I told Clark last night, that the second year would be twice as big (if they have it again). And it might double again in year three. The weather ain't bad. It's centrally located. Many reasonably priced hotels in the area. Cheap car rentals. And it's an open date on the pool calendar.

One thing I see as a given. The American players will overwhelmingly support this event. There's also a zillion filipino players here. Efren beat Earl last night in the 5K challenge match. Looks like Gomez and Archer may hook it up too.

P.S. They are running a Hold 'Em game in the back room all day every day. I snuck in last night for a cool six dollars. Sweet! Oh and for those who are interested, Jhendy on here did play that match against Billy Incardona and Artie B. Five ahead for 5K (total 10K). Artie and Billy won. I had a small side bet on them, laying 6-5. Tonight John (Hendy) will play Artie even for another 3K. This one is close imo.

Oh, one more thing. The world's self proclaimed "best" One Pocket player, Scott Frost, finished out of the money. And some guy named Reyes will play Shannon for the hot seat today. What a surprise!

Glad to hear the players are happy for the most part. I think pool needs another major event in the US. If they can fade this one, learn from it and keep the goodwill of the players and fans it will be exciting to see what they do next. I just hope the next one is less hyperbole and more solid info. Live and learn.

Everyone I have talked to there said the guys running this are legitimately busting their ass to make something good happen and that deserves respect.

By the way, based on the payouts posted pre-event they were already adding $25K it was just all added to first place. The rest of the field was payed by the entries. They didnt add any more money they just changed the distribution.

One thing that would have made it better was if you (TAR) would have been here from the get go! You guys are a perfect fit for an event like this.

I would love to see Accu-Stats make it to Galveston if this becomes an annual pool extravaganza. :)
 
Would have been great to have a TAR Pit at this event. I hope you get to set one up next year.

I offered to get a guy and fly down there with all the gear yesterday. Once I heard what the situation was as far as who is running that side of the house I just forgot about it.

Part of the reason I am a bit skeptical about how this is going is because I know that every issue that has not gone right was brought up months ago to the promoters (some of them by me personally face to face) and was basically told to shut up. No big deal I guess but it is a shame to see all this talent and money without the quality of coverage it deserves. There are a few industry entities that could do it justice and I wish anyone of them had made it. They asked us what it would take to come and we said nothing but expenses. Never heard another word. I think the problem was I didn't sell them a big enough dream like some other people.

I have a real good idea where these guys got some bad information and guidance. The word I get is that they know this now too. If they do another one we will push harder to be a part of it.
