Gold Crown 4 vs. Diamond

..........

To me there is a noticeable differences. Besides Diamond pocket being deeper I believe they may be cut at a tighter angle also.

But I do have a question??? Are the rails not a tad higher on Diamond Tables?????

To me the Diamond table is the one for practice. They require a solid hit for the ball to go.

I've played on both...and have read the GC 4 has a deeper shelf than a GC 3 sort of making it similar to a Diamond

I have a GC4 and I wish it were a Diamond. I don't like the metal part behind the pockets---especially the side pockets. The corner of the metal piece has the potential to scratch your shaft. I'm sure Real King Cobra could fix that though.

Both tables are real nice..either/or in my opinion. A lot more tourneys on GC's.

I love the way Diamond tables play. Only well stroked shots seem to be accepted on diamond tables.

Play on them when ever i get a chance!!

excuse me but a gc5 would be a better comparison. don't ya think ?

they have made the pockets smaller on the gc5 and that would make

it much more similar imho.

question tho for anyone ! a friend of mine opened a room a little while ago

and he has a bunch of gc3's and one gc4. so when i check out the gc4

which has tight pockets now. it was not right. the shelf of the slate inside

the pocket was very short like a barbox. i am wondering if he used the

wrong slates. so are the slates different in size of a gc3 and a gc4.

he did something wrong and i am just trying to figure it out. thia.

Diamond no question...

My vote goes to Diamond without a doubt for the following reasons;

1) Bi-level pocket that is LEATHER, not nasty black plastic. This is such a no brainer design and I love Diamond for it! :)

2) Deep shelf, keeps you honest, favors the better player.

3) Quality, look and strength of the Dymondwood.

I think when it comes to the GCs its more of a nostalgia type thing? I just don't see how the two even compare *shrug*

hi from oldzilla.

GC 5 would be a new table....at new table prices. I'm in the used market

well........... thats is the first you mentioned that !

sorry , i was just asking a question and did not want to get off the

subject. but it would help to know what the subject is.:grin-square:

Not if you are talking about pro or major open events.

Matter of fact I can't think of one big open that is on Brunswicks.

US Open 9 Ball
Derby City Classic
Turning Stone
Reno Open (now defunct)
US Open 10 Ball

All on Diamonds.

Diamond sponsors TAR so take my recommendation with that in mind but to me there is not much choice. Diamonds win in every category that means something to me. I feel they play better, and one of the biggest things to me is no metal on the table to ding up your or get in the way of a rail bridge.

Plus not many support pool today like Diamond does. They are a great company that makes a great product and gives back often to the sport. Get a Diamond and get a good mechanic to install it and I think you will be happy.

truth !!! good point .

wbpa are using gc5's just in addition to jcin's facts.

but the diamonds are excelling in popularity for sure and you can now

find some in the used market !

Diamond has tournament used 9 foot tables available. You can sometimes find great deals on used ones coming out of pool rooms. You can usually find GC3's and 4's cheaper but they are not Diamonds. :D

Gold Crown 4 Vs. Diamond

The straight fact of the matter is that the Diamond table plays consistently better. This is because the people at Diamond recognised the fact there were so many variations of Gold Crowns with shimmed pockets, different rails etc out there. Diamond got the specifications correct straight out of the blocks and built a quality product made it to play consistently the same all over the country (except for local climatic conditions).

When Brunswick faltered with cheap construction to save a buck a few years ago Diamond recognised that fact stepped in and filled the void. That does not mean that all Brunswicks are bad. Rather the Centenials, Aniversary's and early model Gold Crown's are great tables, some of the pre-war classics like the Alexandria's, Regent's and of course the Monarch's are unsurpassed in craftmanship and playability. My hats off to the people at Diamond Billiards they have a great product. That's why I will be purchasing one for my new home.

Cold Crowns were also in use at the World 14.1 Championships, and they played just about perfect and were very well-received by the participants.

Ultimately, this is like choosing between two classic cars. If you're playing on either a Diamond or a Gold Crown, you're sitting pretty and should be very happy for what you have.

Finally, I'll add that I don't see how tough a table plays to be an important measure of its quality. Any brand of table can be set up to play easy or tough. For 99.99% of all pool players, a table that plays tough is no better than a table that plays easy.

Thoughts? Likes dislikes ? Differences?

I was in this exact market 2 Christmas' ago. My circumstance was slightly different because I was buying new at the time. The comparison of the tables was the same except for the price. At the time the GC4 was about 2k more, although the dealer threw in about 2k worth of game room equipment. My main question was "does the GC4 have an option for smaller pockets?" The answer I was given was to have some local mechanic "shim" the pockets.
Well.....I've seen good shim jobs and very bad shim jobs. I wanted good clean pockets, I really don't care for shims. So.....that pretty much made up my mind. I opted for the Diamond Pro w/pro cut pockets (4.5 in.). They do the pro cut at no extra charge either.
In your case, the price will probably be a big factor. The price and condition of used tables really varies. You will be limited to whatever is in your area or you will have to figure in shipping also. Good luck.
I feel that both tables play well when they are set up right. I just went with the Diamond because of the pocket situation at the time. I think the GC5 offers the 4.5 in. pockets as an option now. I'm sure this was their answer to losing business to Diamond. Just my .02:)

Yeah but if you check Brunswicks website, its like an extra 900 for procut pockets.
