I recently had part of the action in 2 10 ahead sets for 1000 each in which my horse won.. The guy in the box against us name was Billy Rae Sudden, now I usually dont mention names but the next day when we saw him he asked me and the guy that beat him for $40. Keep in mind Billy Rae was getting staked so he didnt lose any of his own money. My horse informed him that he is not really in the practice of doing that why cant your stake horse give you the money. He blows up at both of us and starts swearing and being a real a@#hole and saying that he was gonna knock us everywhere we went. Were we out of line for not giving him the money to begin with??

Update after reading alot of your replys and especially Mark Gregorys who I have a ton of respect for I should add something, before we got down with him he badgered us to play called us out in front of everyone and really did not show much class. We were gonna give him the money anyway but he didnt even give us time to do so really. I would have given him 100 if he was a nicer person and had not made some of the remarks he made. I have been around the game for a long time and have been in his shoes and your right it is embarrasing to ask for money but if I was busted I think the last thing I would do is be a ***** we never said no just said it isnt something we normally do.

I'm not up on the pool gambling scene and don't know the intricacies.
If he'd won, would he give you guys money? I highly doubt it.
Seems like you guys won the lottery and he didn't, unless its a given practise to share your jelly with the loser of the match.

I'd be interested in finding out.

Billy Rae is old school, and we always gave walking money to players so they weren't walking around broke. If he was asking for just $40 he more than likely was broke. The stake horse all ready lost, Billy's not going to ask him for the money. You just never know in this kind of life when you're going to need something from one of the players. I'm not saying you're wrong, but for $20 each you wouldn't have to hear any shit. Billy's not going to follow you around just to knock you, but if you guy's are ever in the same room at the same time, he's surely not going to help. The money is not a refund, it's just a couple of bucks for him to get some food or drinks. Just how we did things, how do you guy's say it, "back in the day" The more you're on the road, the more you help one another out. Sure try to bust all off them, but when you beat them and they ask for a couple of bucks, give it up and don't ever look for it back.

Tap, Tap, Tap, we used to call it a walking stick, just a little food money for the busted player.

In this day and age I doubt many would do that.

I say if they were very nice I'd possibly do it. If they were an ass, or sharked you during the match then **** them.

Not super old myself but old enough.............

that yes, it was a thing to give the broke player a little walking money as a courtesy so they werent totally busted. Just throwing him a lil something to eat on or try win more from and not usually enough that it would hurt. He probably shouldnt get pissed about it though times have changed but old school ways are to do it most times.

but how would billy rae's backer feel if he found out he was getting a walking stick from the guys that just beat him? i don't think i would like it one bit if i had backed someone and lost and then found out he got money from the guys that just took my money. if the player had bet his own money, then i would probably do it. jmo.

usually..........

its such a small amount its a courtesy not to leave a fellow road player or gambler broke and without a way to eat or get around. it isnt a percentage or a split..............its a hey, heres 20 go get something to eat man. I have a friend that s a road player and he will at times leave the folks with a couple hundred if the guy went off for thousands. Its a small gesture they make because the guy is bust and no backer should ever feel offfended that their horse got walking money so he didnt go without dinner that night or a way home.

It's not his friends money, its the winners money. Period.

It's your money, you can do what you want with it but $40 seems like a pretty cheap purchase of some good will. You never know where the road ahead will lead you.

If you are in the habit of staking players then being in good standing is one way to prevent business from being done.

yeah its a small amount, but i wouldn't back the guy anymore if he did that to me. if i staked him to begin with, then i would know he probably didn't have much money and i would still make sure the guy could eat.

That's why I don't gamble...there's not dignity in getting busted and then having to borrow money from someone...

All depends on if you got a chance at more action...If it was a one time deal..then f..k him..if his backers like his game & u got a chance at another score then you might want to spread a lil corn on the food plot.

you shoulda beat him down. he is a huge P.O.S. and doesn't deserve it. my buddy staked him in a game he won 1800. instead of takin the money home (he was staying with my friend) he took every penny to the casino and blew it, including the original stake. he actually had the audacity to ask for his clothes he left. the got a pimp slap and fell to the floor sobbing begging not to get hit again and my friend decided not to mess him up further since he returned the stake. he did however keep most of his clothes and tossed his a$$ out. tell him dan and pat want to know when he is coming back to az

If the guy had no money to begin with and lost 2Gs of someone elses money then he will still be in the same way you found him once you walk out the door. he didnt lose anything no reason he should get walking money

For many years, it was standard practice to cough up some "get out of town" money if you busted your opponent, even if you didn't like the guy.

It's interesting to hear that Billy Ray is still out there playing. I haven't heard his name mentioned in several years.

It Depends!

If he was playing with his own money then by all means slip him some jelly; however, if it was his backer's money that jelly may be construed as a Dump and he could lose his backer(s). To offset this, I generally speak with the backer(s) at payoff time and bring up my concern for the person's welfare. If the person is in need, I tell the backer " I'm going to slip him a hundy (or whatever) so he has some pocket money." More times then not, the backer(s) says "he's alright" or "I'll make sure he's OK".

I don't like burning bridges that I'd may or would like to cross again someday :thumbup2: Staying on the good action list is a good thing.

Bob <More a backer these elder years then a player but the same applies.>

I'll say this, if it was on some shady shit and not in the open, I woulda told him to F off. Last thing you want is for someone to see you handing money to the losing player privately, thats how shit gets started. Gas money and maybe some food and drink money after a tough loss, sure why not. Unless you don't like the guy, no reason to not pass off a little dough, but if they get staked...ALWAYS give it to the backer not the player because you have the backers money. In 2009 that's how it works. Anything else...well consider yourself a victim of a bite.
