Dirty Shaft Threads

I have two older Schon shafts 5/16x14 piloted thread that wont screw all the way down on the butt . I assume the threads inside the shaft insert are dirty or something . I took a little round wire brush to them trying to clean the threads but no luck :( Any helpful idea's would be appreciated .

Take the cue to a Cue Repairman and have the insert tapped with a 5/16-14 tap. That will either remove the dirt or correct any problems with the threads. It will not be expensive and it should not take very long to finish.

Did they screw down properly before? Are you screwing them onto the original butt?

I'm not an expert on Schon, but I do know many of them had a tight fit at the bottom of their threads. So they only fit properly on the butt they were designed for. I believe this fit of their thread may have changed over the years.

You mention "older". How old are they and are you trying to put them on a newer butt? If this is the case, it may not be the thread is dirty. There are several cases of older Schons having a slighly different thread & therefore won't screw on to a newer Schon butt ( and vice versa older Schon butt with newer shaft).
 
It all depends on why the shafts are not tightening all the way.

Assuming the pin is fine.

If there is debris inside the shafts, take a piece of wire or something similar and work the debris out of the threaded holes.

If the threads are the issue, not debris, either take them to a cue maker and have him do the repair, or buy a thread chaser and do it your self.

I have two Schons from the early 80's. Shafts from other cues with 5/16 will fit the Schon butt, but the Schon shafts won't fit on other butts with 5/16 joints. The shafts will start but then act as if being cross threaded. I think it is referred to as an interferrence fit. Don't mess it up by running a tap into it.

i keep the outside of them clean, the inside i ignore-its patina, adds value :wink:

Put some big washers between the shaft and butt to fill the gap. It will solve your problem, other players will admire your ingenuity, and it will look really cool. Trust me.

P.S. Don't worry if they're not quite thick enough. You'll enjoy the "jingle" with each hit, especially during the holidays.

lmao....guaranteed action from everyone....like a buddy of mine with his cracked joint collar and duck tape wrapped around it....cue still hit normal and everyone wanted to play him with his duck cue lmao....he shot them out the sky with it:grin-square:

This is a great idea! You know, he could eschew the washers for aluminum can pull tabs:

Since these aluminum can pull tabs have two holes in them, the cue's pin naturally screws through one hole, while the other hole could be used as a "sighting" hole, just like those flip-up iron sights on an M1 Garand rifle! (One would just have to rotate the cue so that the part of the tab sticking out of the joint is pointed upwards towards the table light.)

Ingenuity at its finest!

put a little bee's wax (like Burt's lip balm) on the threads, screw 'em together gently, and wallah! It's kinda' like butterin' your bread.

These shafts are locking up before the insert gets to the joint .

Anyone wanna buy two older schon shafts ? :grin-square:

Are these shafts with Schon on the joint collar?

One has Schon on the joint collar the other looks to have the same collar material but nothing printed on it and has a yellow micarta ferrule .
I would like to make these shafts work but if I can't I will trade them for other shafts that are 5/16x14 piloted with a solid black collar .

Well,have you looked closely? Is it the pilot on the shaft that is not fitting within the recess of the stainless on the butt?
