Someday I Want To Do This...

I was thinking I have all my cues in a gun safe and they are getting older, I do take them out and play with most of them from time to time, but for the most part they never are seen by anyone. Tikkler posts pics of his cues and alot of us here enjoy them for sure. I cant take pics and I dont know how to post pics anyways.:sorry:

So what I thought would be cool to have some very secure display cases built and put some of my cues on display in a casino for example, with a plack under the butt explaining who made the cue, what it cost new-current value, how many were made. Not just the big cues but cues from D series McDermotts up to monster Gus cues. I would leave my name off the display, i'm not doing this for publicity, but to show people that pool is for real and cues are more than ramin wood things from K-Mart.

I think I could get a display like that into casino's, musumesies and other places(im to sleepy to think of other kinds of places) but spots where there is no direct sunlight. And have other printed boards talking about how long it takes to properly make a cue, list the HOF cue makers names, just like any disply at a museium would have. Airports have that sort of thing as well. probably display 20-25 cues is all, if it worked they wouldnt have to be just mine, at least we would be showing people out there that pool is for real and cues are a sub culture of pool. this is whats missing-little things like this could help pool. will it fix pool? never, but it cant harm it either.

I think you and Papa Pete think alike.

I think that is a pretty good idea. You dont merely own the cue, but also spread the good work and legacy for the one who made it.

Sounds like a great idea, and you're in the right area for it. But..... we could teach you how to upload photos. :D Then many of us would be given the chance to see your collection without booking a flight. As for the actual picture taking, the more times you try it the more comfortable you'll become with it.

eric

eric, trust me when I tell you that if can take pictures and post them, you could probably learn real quick how to make mine look like crap. They dont come anymore computer, camera, cell phone inept than me.

I also think that would be a great idea for a display, but you would have to worry about temperature and humidity.

Happy holidays and a happy new year to you, and everyone

fatboy,

i think that's a tremendously philanthropic idea that you have. for someone w/ such a great collection to offer it to the public w/o anything in return is great to see.

i do think that it would be possible to have something like this done, in the aforementioned locations, ie. casinos, airports, etc. however, i think you would need someone like a lawyer to help you w/ this, in order to adequately protect and insure your cues, God forbid something would happen to them.

i think your idea of airport is a great idea, considering that many people are stuck there for hours w/ nothing to do.

another aspect of the display, which you touched upon, might include the assembly of the cue, from turning square, to dowels, to blanks, etc to finally finished cues.

personally, i'd love to see something like this, but of course i'm biased.

good luck!

I think that sounds really kool , Most people don't even have a clue how a cue is made or assembled, or even what the makeup of a cue is. I know it would take alot of planning, commitment and most of all trust for you to even consider putting your collection out there for the public to see. I know myself if I had anything even like you or Steve have I don't think I would ever let them out of my home. Even with my little modest collection I have a few I dont even get out of my gun safe. But The five or six that I do play with are the only ones I even bring out cause they are just my players. But how ever I hope you do take some pictures and post them I love to see nice cue's that I could only dream of owning <<ED

good idea, here's what i would consider doing...

if u are putting it on display in an area where the majority of people dont know anything about pool then put some of the fancier cues there. u can put a 4 point 4 veneer gus there of course but for the most part, the display should show fancier cues. i think it should be like that since most of the people looking at it wouldn't know anything about pool and would be more impressed/interested with fancy cues. showing a bunch of random people a 4 point 4 veneer gus sitting next to a 4 point 4 veneer searing would have little effect. show them 2 fancy fury cues next to each other and u'll get a bunch of ohhhs and ahhs. perhaps put the fancy production cues on the sides and put the gus in the middle or something. that way they have to look at it and realize it's a historical piece.

if u are putting the display on at a cue show then by all means put the historical pieces up and cues from HOF cuemakers.

i think a good place to put it would be somewhere in vegas in general. there's always tournys there so u get a mix of people who don't know about pool and people who do know about pool. each group can admire the display differently.

and if it works out, maybe u can put a separate display showing a cue in progress. something like this: http://www.waynecustomcues.com/recut-points.html. have a cuemaker glue a forearm and give it to u without turning it down. then get the same forearm after it's turned down. get the buttsleeve etc. that way each piece can show the whole process of building a cue and teach people who dont know about cues to appreciate the work thats goes into making one. of course this would probably cost a lot since u'd need a separate piece made for each part of the process so u'll probably needing like at least 5-6 pieces of the same forearm. but it'd be nice to see.

GR8 idea and you've gotten some valuable input.

Don't confuse this with fact but i've heard, read or something that cues don't do well if stored horizontally for extended periods of time. You might want to check with someone that knows what their talking about with regards to the best way to display your prizes in order to minimize potential warpage, etc.

That's a great idea. I'd love to be able to get close to some of the wonderful cues I only get to see in pictures. The Smithsonian museum as well as others have traveling displays that are treated very well and allow people in all areas of the country to see them. I'm not saying that this is something you would want to do but something like this would be wonderful. Even if not, it might be a good way to get info on the best methods to display your collection without damage.

The airports and museums allow all ages to see the cues, where the casinos limit this a bit. I'm sure the casinos are every bit as secure, however.

Let us all know if you do this so we can have a chance to go see them.

Thanks for sharing, it's great to be able to enjoy art even if we cannot afford to own it.

Someday I Want To Do This

Eric, great idea you have, as a small time collector, i love to look at others collections. was at Midwest show in Dayton, & though i live in Michigan, i've never seen John Mars [the Mars Man] collection, couldn't get away from my own long enough to see his entirely. but it would be nice to see yours & others. regards don..... sureman183@yahoo.com 989-569-3577

i thinks thats pretty cool, showcasing those cue..You will make the cuemakers be proud to their works..

Happy holiday,
Al

At one time, I was planning on doing the same thing with the cases I have from many world champions by doanating them free of charge. I received a lot of inquiries from several interested parties but the promised meusems or places to display them were never built. There are so many schisters in this industry, I decided now to just keep them in the closet.

That's a closet I'd like to see:wink:

I like the idea a lot because in the general public, people seem surprised that some pool cues are worth good money. A high traffic area like an airport or casino lobby would get a lot of eyeballs. I would rather see the classic cues, but the fancy themed cues would probably make the most stunning display.

I know I wouldn't have a problem setting up a display in my living room.
But good idea. Spread them around and let people have an eye opener.

thats the whole idea, its not about me, i wouldnt want my name on it-it is to honor the cue makers and show people our world.

ohh I like the idea of showing a few cues during the stages of construction, I am positive I could fine a cue maker that would help me, and brief descriptions of the materials, just how long it takes, and how long a well made cue will last.

I would insure the cues and make sure I'm covered for any loss. I wouldnt put a Gus 8pt cue in the display, its possible to create a display with small to big cues but not rare a GSB's or 8 pt Gus's.

A display could certainly include some photo's of the really special cues. Along with a few words to give them proper meaning to those who would not otherwise be familiar with there importance.
