well i thought i was getting better at this game. ive been consistantly beating other rookies like me. i've been getting down to the last ball with other good players, not great players.
i go to play my dad today and he beats the sheeeeet!!! outa me, like both games i had 5 balls on the table and 2 he hit on on purpose with his ball following behind.
i know my dad is an amazing pool player, but it wasnt that. i just seemed to be playing like crap, everything i thought i learned seemed to mean nothing and nothing was working.
sometimes this game makes me wanna throw my pool stick across the room like brad pitt in troy!
i guess just more practice.

has anyone ever been beat so bad it makes you wanna give up playing the game?

Yeah this guy Travis Trotter used to have this problem but he beats his dad now all the time.

Many times . . .

Anyway, if your Dad is such a good player, then you have a good resource available to you. Don't worry about beating him, ask him to help you with your game. Work together and enjoy getting better at the game you love with the old man. Some day, you'll be very glad you did.

Well to quote Buddy Hall..."I hate losing more than you, that is why I am better."

I think almost everyone here can say that they have been beat bad enough to lose their cool, and probably half of the guys here that play top shelf can say they have broke a cue out of anger. About half of these guys can say they broke their cue after practicing alone.

Pool is a game of solitaire, and sometimes in solitaire you get a bad hand. You know a game that just can't go your way...This can happen for days even months, and it can be a horrible experience...It can make you go insane if you let it...

Some things to remember:
You are not a machine.
The game can beat you any time.
Never give up even in the face of certain death.
Put the cue down when your back starts to hurt.
Your dad brought you into the world, he can take you out.

losing to ANYONE only drives me to get better.

It sucks getting beat any time when shooting pool. Your best bet is to learn why and how your getting beat and improve on your game. Strategy and fundamentals are key. Getting through the hard matches will make it easier for you in the future. Ask your dad to help if he is that much better.

yeah I can relate. I used to get beat by ma dad all the time. Now I could give him the last 4 on his gc3.

No. Nobody has ever lost two games before, ever in the history of pool. You have personally redefined the agony of defeat.

One thing no one else mentioned, and it surprises me, is that it doesn't matter how many balls you have left when you lose. That is NOT a measure of how badly you lost. The only thing that really matters, is that you lost. After that, what matters the most is how many innings you had for that loss. If your opponent runs out from the break, you probably have 7 balls left, that doesn't mean anything. But, if you had 4 or 5 innings, and still have 7 balls left, you have a problem that desperately needs addressing!

Agreed Neil!

8-ball is a win/loss game not points, balls left, etc. etc. If someone runs down to the 8-ball and misses, I'm going to win that game 90% of the time regardless of how many balls are left on the table.

Rule #1: STOP Trying to run the table when there is a high chance you will not get out. If you have trouble balls, address them early, take control of pockets, obtain break balls, etc. Set yourself up to win!

Rule #2: Read and Follow Rule #1

Too true. I played 8ball against a guy at work last week. In one rack, he broke and ran the table - only the second time he had ever done this against me.

I was genuinely pleased for him; but when I offered my congratulations, all he said was that is was a shame that he pocketed one of my set off the break, since otherwise he would have beaten me by 7 balls!

get a cuetec! :grin-square: worked for Travis Trotter

Consider yourself lucky that you could get your dad to play pool with you. I was fortunate to play 2 games of pool with my dad and I won both times. He wasn't a fan of the game and to my knowledge only set foot in a pool hall once in his life. We were going to sign up for the father/son doubles tournament in 1987. We played one game and he said I needed to find another partner. Dad was great but a lover of pool he was not.

I wish that I could have had many more games with my Dad whether he beat me or not. Parents, they may frustrate us but we sure miss them when they are gone.

Well, you will get better and better. Just give it time. It takes several years of steady practice just to learn the ropes.

Once you learn, you may get rusty, but it does come back pretty fast.
