Best Place for Pool in Retirement

I am kind of new to posting here and didn't know how to word this exactly, but I've been reading the forum for a long time and don't think I've ever seen this discussed much.

My question for the members is where would the best place to live be if your hobby is pool and you are going to retire soon? I don't ever plan to stop working. I'll probably do something part time that I like to do, but in a couple of years, more or less, I'll be done with the full time job I do now.

So..if you could live anywhere you wanted, also taking into consideration climate, housing, cost of living, ect., where would you live if your hobby was pool?

I know there are a lot of guys on here that have been around a lot, so any ideas would be appreciated.

Angeles City. A million bars and every one of them has a 9' table. Mostly all retired military guys, and for many of them pool is their main hobby. It seems funny to walk around and see so many guys carrying cues. I feel like I'm in pool players paradise. :wink:

West coast [fla]

We live in PALM HARBOR FLA>West of TAMPA,North of CLEARWATER,There a 4 pool halls all in 10min. or less.I am in a 55 and older com. with 2 robertsons @ the clubhouse.Plenty of all day players[older than me of course.PM me with your ## I will call you with more info.>>HANK<<ps lots of year round golf too.

Id be happy in any big city in the phillipines. But if you say Angeles city then thats where id go.

Texas or Florida wouldve been my two choices for the states. Just look at the tournanment section; half of the tourneys are florida or texas. I live in a town of 300,00 and theres 8 pool halls within 10 miles of me, and 3 times as many bars with bartables. Like everything else pool is bigger in texas.
 
Only problem with TX

Is that (at least in my area) 9 foot tables are a rare commodity. Bar tables every where. If you like 9 footers TX aint it (I live in the DFW area).
 
I travel quite a bit and try to play pool as much as possible. Austin, TX is my favorite and has a lot of positive attributes.

I heard the Tuna has a Great Pool Room. 9ft Diamond Pro-Am,wit sum Tite azz pokkets,and woofing like you nevah heard!!:grin:,The South of Texas near Houston might be better suited to the 9ft player. SW Louisiana is all Bar Box Action,but we have Great Food and lots of fishing and hunting. Retirement Paradise---No!,but a good place to relax and enjoy what's left of life,..Yes!
 
I would probably pick florida. It's a nice place to retire anyway and some heavy duty pros can be found there. There's apparently plenty of pool halls and ... lame as this sounds, I think the more seniors there are in an area, the more likely it is to see some good straight pool.
 
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Arizona yet. They have a huge retirement community in Sun City, AZ, with 4 or 5 pool rooms alone. Most have 16-20, 9 foot GC's, a couple snooker tables and are super super cheap.

There are between 70-100 weekly tournaments going on every week of the year all across the valley.

Vegas is only a 4 hr drive, LA a 5 hr drive and San Diego a 4.5 hr drive. Flights to any of these cities are $39 one way.

Weather is great 9 months out of the year, the other 3 are either in the Pool Room or in the Pool.

Lots of great 1 pocket players call AZ home, and there are some great monthly tournaments all over the place.

www.mypoolscene.com has some tournament information, updated often. www.azpoolscene.com has information from leagues, rooms, tournaments and other news updated daily.
 
Sacramento Hardtimes probably has the best membership deal around ($70ish a month for unlimited play anytime there is no line), perfect tables, and everyone there is friendly. If you want to relax and play pool everyday all afternoon long, that is a very good place to do so (most of the members seem to be retirees). Housing is fairly cheap, but the weather is a bit extreme in the summer (but they keep it chilly inside the pool hall, so thats not a problem).

I think any decent sized city of 75,000 or so will have a couple pool rooms. I hadn't played in 35 years until I retired and I bought a 9' table. It's a great way to pass time and if you put some time in a the table you will improve. I'm a lot better than I was three years ago.

I would recommend getting your eyes checked first.

Atlanta GA is a great town for pool tourneys all the time plus you get the advantage of florida and south carolina short drive away
Texas is great in some parts but if you want 9 foots stay away unless you hit Houston or Austin
 
Thanks for the info. I play in a tournament(s) here every week. This is the heart of the rust belt. Good jobs are rare. I'd hate to be young again here. Bar box 8-ball is the main game, and its usually valley rules for tournaments. I do ok. Gambling just doesn't happen around my area like it used to. The days of lots of guys with big paychecks is a thing of the past here.

I just went to the Derby a while back and last year was at the Expo and the MidWest Cue Show. I like 9-ball, 1pocket, straight pool and I'm even starting to like 8-ball a little since I have to play it all the time. I also like to play for a little something now and then.

Anyone else that wants to add anything, its appreciated. Thanks guys.
