Depends on where you live. Unless you're willing to travel across the country for lessons!

It really depends upon what you need. Stroke lessons, pre-shot routines, aiming or game lessons. Each Instructor is skilled in all but specializes in a few.

Tell me what you think you need and I will give you some great recommendations.....SPF=randyg

Considering that a lot of pro players go to Stan Shuffett and hearing nothing but great things about him as a teacher and a parent of a very respectful champion in his son Landon .I can not see how one could go wrong with taking lessons from a man of his caliber and integrity

DrDave I know you've been busy with various projects but your BCA Active Instructor list is now roughly 3 years old. It's dated Sept 28, 2007.
I've tried to find a new list several time in the past, but I could never find one. Does anyone know if there is a more current list online?

Thanks,
Dave

Select "Active" under Instructor and All States/Providences

My query returned 237 Active BCA Instructors

The format doesn't lend itself to being pasted into a Word document nor Excel and there are some duplications.

Hope this gives you a good starting place though.

Thanks for all you do for the world of pool.

Never know

You read my mind. I'm ready to go "Gangbusters: Grammar Edition" on this entire forum.

Several of the smartest men I ever met could barely read and write, never knew how to turn a computer on. Another grand old gentleman of the game wrote like he was barely literate on a computer. I had far too much respect for his abilities and niche knowledge to ever hint at his posts being lacking in the first few years I knew him. I was very glad I did, Not only did he have a PhD, he was the head of a school at an ivy league college!

If somebody can't write well enough that we can get the gist of what they are saying it is their problem. If we can understand their posts then perhaps they write just fine.

Thanks for the info. I guess the BCA doesn't publish a list anymore.

Dave

Or maybe it's just another case of learned helplessness that plagues our society. I have no regards correcting adults who do not know the difference between "to" and "too" or "your" and "you're" just to name a couple. America is widely regarded as one of the stupidest nations in the world, and it all starts with basic literacy. Reading and writing.

Granted, I know this is a billiards forum, and perfect spelling and grammar aren't required, but there's also nothing wrong with being in the habit of writing properly. If you're going to write at a third grade level, then be prepared to be treated like a third grader from time to time.

to be honest...

many traditional rules of writing...

don't work as well in this medium... when you have people with different tech accessing the same info...

long paragraphs become unreadable blocks of text.. especially on a hand held... or at very high resolutions

be true to your medium

cuts both ways

That can cut both ways though. If you walk like a duck and talk like a duck don't be surprised if you are mistaken for a duck. If you type like a jackass don't be too surprised . . . :D

Aside from a very few that are their equal, in my opinion the most valuable posters on this forum are the genuine pool players. Old time scuffers and the people making a major chunk or all of their income from playing pool right now. Most got their education in poolrooms. I'd much rather tap into their experience than a PhD's that plays a little hobby pool regardless of how purty the PhD writes. The PhD knows theory, the player has been there in real life and can give the first hand report.

I typically write at a seventh to tenth grade level where it is easily understood. As Softshot mentions I often break rules for readability too. If and when the situation warrants such as the proposals I submitted to NASA as VP of a R&D corporation, I write well into the college levels. I still don't know a fraction of what some of the people on this forum know about pool even though they write poorly. They have their own PhD's, Pool Hall Degrees!

I still kind of mentally shake my head when I see obvious mistakes, but I've found ragging on people about it doesn't change them. It's something they get better at with practice.

I've noticed some guys on this forum get better by leaps and bounds just from posting more and more. I almost hate to name names cuz it sounds like a backhanded compliment, but John Schmidt and Fatboy come to mind. Their writing and punctuation's a lot better than it used to be.

Basically if your day to day lifestyle involves reading and writing, some of it's gonna rub off. If you don't really deal with it that much, it won't. We definitely have guys on here who will make you flinch at how they post but they play better than almost anyone you know. Their job description just doesn't involve writing.

The problem is a result of the changes in the government school system. When I was in school, if I turned in a paper, it would come back with red circles and arrows identifying any spelling or grammer errors. (it also affected the grade the paper received)

Now, papers can get an A, based strictly on the content, or what the student "meant to say". If people aren't taught proper writing skills, how can we expect them to be able to write?
