A real creep

I'm going to get out of line. Not for the first time, but here goes anyway.

Grady Mathews is a living pool legend. His accomplishments and contributions to the sport are immeasurable. I guarantee you, that if you have watched any of the matches he commentated on for Accu-Stats, you probably learned something that has helped your game, won you a match, or made you some dough.

Grady is from a different era, that perhaps sadly, no longer exists in pool. And it's tough to let that go. In addition, I'm guessing the vast majority of you here know that Grady is now looking at things through a prism colored by recent events that would have brought most of us to our knees.

All of you will do and write your comments as you see fit. And that's as it should be. But, just maybe, before you post a demeaning post in this thread, no matter how deserved you think it might be, maybe you'll let it slide just this once.

Lou Figueroa

I pretty much agree with all your posts, Lou, but especially this one.

Rep to you. Well said

I don't think i will even read the rest of this thread.

Grady had his glory days. I'm the same age as him. When I shoot I bob and weave and screw up my face and rock back and forth and trip on the rug (I have Parkinson's)
and I feel a great deal of compassion for a competitor like Grady when it starts to go down hill.( I only mean to compare me with him because of our age , not pool skills) But this has nothing to do with his skills fading
I still gamble in my small way( real cheap) and if I get destroyed I pay and try to find a better game.

And everybody forgets the BIG LIE. He went to Kolby's to practice. That's just plain bull-end product. He went to Kolby's because he thought he could steal a quick thou before hitting the sack. A great name in the game, sure.
But he's still a hustler. And he is publicly flaming the people who loved and respected him so much. Maybe I was wrong in calling him a nit. I Take it back. Let me just say he was temporarily acting like a nit.

You just can't blow off friends and admirers like that because after the game goes , that's all you got. Somebody close to him should talk this whole thing over with him.

I always wanted to meet him . Now I'd rather not. No great loss to him.
It's my loss. I know.

It was just a movie but how did M.F. act when F.E.F. finally put him down?

Grady might be overreacting a lil but It's truly how he see's it so instead of dogging the man out why not just say nothing or at least be respectful to your elder & just say....I didn't see it the same way...Just amazes me how the lack of respect goes hand in hand with the ages of the posters

Myself i still greet any of my elders as sir or maam & If I see a elder venting like Grady is obviously doing..I let them because after this many years they got ahead of me they deserve it.

All I'm gonna say to Grady is I'm sorry the trip turned out to not be fun cuz that's what life is all about anyway....I've lost money before but still had a good time as well as won money and wish ida never bet..for whatever reason..just my 2 cents.

Good post troy. i guess i am old fashioned i still say sir and ma'am to anyone of my elders.

Huh? I never heard those words. And Jason,I don't want to either. Especially don't call me ma'am.

I called you sir the first time i met you. i also said thank you sir several times you said good shot or nice out to me. I would be afraid to catch a pool ball to the nards if i called you ma'am lol.

Guys, I'm tired and I just travelled a heck of a lot and all I want to do is loosen up and practice a little. If nobody wants to just practice, I'll just go get some sleep at my hotel room, that's fine.

I'm sorta thinking that might of been a better reply than getting into games for $500/set and then complaining that he was robbed after the fact. Anyone, even Grady, who puts money up, should never cry about losing that money. Maybe even especially Grady, who has probably taken sets from people much below his level of ability.

They didn't hit you over the head and take the money out of your pocket....

There was a post the other day here on AZ on how to spot a hustler.

Did the guy have a house cue, a cheap stick, or an expensive custom cue.
Because if he had one of those he was probably a hustler.

All I know is this whole episode sounds like it was straight out of the Color of Money with Forest Witaker.......and I quote "You a hustler Amos?"

Some things change in this world some things don't.

Let's see your super shots

> Let the man vent,he's earned that right. After he gets it off his chest,he'll either teach you 4-5 things that help you,or keep you laughing for an hour.

Anyone notice that even though the general consensus is his game is way out of shape, and his health may be in decline,he still SENDS IT IN?

That's what warriors do.... Tommy D.

Thank you for your kind and compassionate post.

i think at one time or another we have all said something out of anger that we wish we could take back.
words spoke during and after the heat of battle are better left unsaid.

Maybe this is all part of the final hustle. In a month or so Grady returns to Arizona and takes them off for 20k after laying the lemon and creating a story to the tune of 1k.....oh never mind that would be cool. This is a case of sour apples.

I think its laughable for him to book a losing session and state that this makes it no fun anymore. How many people has he played over the years that thought the same damn thing after he ran over them.

No one forces you to gamble and this case is no different. Booking losers feels like a kick in the stomach no matter how it started/ends. Suck it up and move on.

I can respect the player and what he has done, but this is just an example of poor attitude.

The worst thing about this forum is the regular justification for brutal actions due to some code of the jungle or pool culture.

No where in the civilized world would you invite an elderly gentlemen of some historic note into your house for an event that you promoted as a big time deal and allow him to be humiliated and busted in like the first couple hours he's there. (and by the owner of the house no less!)

I don't care if he's cranky and has done some questionable things in his past. He's a 67-year-old man in mediocre health. I hope your grandfather doesn't accidently walk into Kolby's some day and say the wrong thing and people happily take his money.

I know Lenny to be a fine young man with nothing but the best intentions. But he to gets caught up in this pool culture too where no matter what you do don't knock somebody's action or intervene when a brutal act is about to happen. That's just how it is. He asked for it.

To say well we didn't know how Grady plays, etc., is not valid.

There aren't five people in the State of Arizona that can play Jimmy even. Everyone at Kolby's has seen John Henderson play and knows he can't stand up to Jimmy or anywhere close now. I'm sure he could when he was young. Jimmy is an experienced, big-time gambler. Grady had no chance.

There were people in Kolbys that had the the power/ability to say to Jimmy and or Grady hey let's wait on this. You're/he's our guest. You got a big event tomorrow. You just got off the plane. Let's just hit some balls around. Jimmy you're probably way better than Grady so let's just cool it for now. In a civiliezed world that's what would have happened. Anybody running a big time event would have known to protect their guest of honor and dissuaded him from participating in a blow out.

But that's the pool culture I guess.

So it's horrible what Grady said after the fact? I guess when you get older you'll undertstand that when elderly people get humiliated in public they lash out. Actually almost everyone does whether it's justifiable or not.

If Grady comes off the road looking for action that's one thing. But if he's there as your guest you owe him some respect and responsibility.

So did Grady deserve what he got because he's some sort of bad guy? I say no. And shame on those who do.
