Hello everyone. I'm new here and I'm looking to have a cue made. I have picked the cue maker out (BCM) but I'm looking for some burl woods to send him. I'm interested in Amboyna, Thuya, Walnut, and Rosewood burl. I need to find a website that supplies these. I'm aware of cuecpmponents.com and was told to avoid that site. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks, Robert.
 
Why avoid cuecomponents.com? Bought many items from them in the past with no issues. If you're worried about the ivory issue, I believe that is resolved. If it's because of Joe's stance against Kamui and their pricing policies, I feel he one of the few that hasn't been sucked into their business model and kudos to him for not embracing it.

Just curious, do you have more knowledge of woods to be used in cues than your cuemaker? I have always trusted my cuemakers to pick out the best pieces of wood and they most always send me pictures of the highly figured / burled woods they plan to use if I request them.
 
Just curious as to why you would be suppling the materials for the cue?

I can understand having something of sentimental value you wanted to use but a blind order for materials any cue maker should have? Little lost on that one. Most cue makers hate it when the customer wants to supply the materials.
 
Agreed- if you don't know where to buy the wood, what make you think it is a good idea for either you or Brian?

Brian knows his way around wood. I believe the move is to tell him what you want, then sit back and put your feet up!
 
Cue Components could very well be a great company but I asked 3 people two of them being well known cue makers and the third a cue repair person and all 3 told me to avoid them. I did not ask them why but they are reputable people and 3 strikes in a row was enough for me.

The rest of you are correct. I am going to let BCM supply the wood. The only reason I was searching myself is that Bryan had a problem trying to find me the really good wood that I insisted on. He ordered some AAAA wood from a new supplier but when it came in it looked awful

Also its a good idea to let the builder select the wood. I'm not a cue builder but I hate it in my business when the customer tells me what materials to use. I figure if they know better then me then they can do it themselves. Hell I've only got 31 years experiance what do I know?
 
Bryan at BCM and I are in agreement. He knows the hit of the materials and I know my taste in cues.

I was just asking what other people think of the different types of burl.

I refuse to get in a argument with a person I do not know about a tip that I care nothing about.
 
I've supplied the wood for cuemakers several times, and they always have the option of inspecting it and accepting it before using it. I personally enjoy buying beautiful and exotic woods, hard to find high-grades, and have never tried to get anybody to use crap. Burls are amazing, and some are incredibly expensive and delicate. In fact, I'm having two made now from two different cuemakers. If they're willing to work with you on that, to me anyway, its a big plus.

Do a Search in this forum for "Marblewood".
Chuck Starkey built one recently and it was
Sold on here immediately. It is Awesome wood,
especially if you are going with a wood handle (wrapless)
and pair it with Birdseye or Curly Maple.
Chuck will build a 60" version for me as soon as he
acquires the perfect pieces of wood.

Brian builds great cues and you will be happy
with whatever wood(s) you choose.

I'm just wondering who gets stuck paying for any special ordered wood that doesn't meet your high standards; you, or Bryan? :grin-square:

The hardest part about wood is that the piece you look at in block form won't look anything like that after it's turned down. It may look better, it may look worse, but it won't look the same, that is a promise. I know you've said that the cue maker has the wood and you're not going to be buying it yourself, but I wanted to toss that in here. I've dealt with guitars for far too long not to know what happens to wood after you start taking layers of it off. You could have a really "highly figured" piece of lumber that comes out "hardly figured" after turning it down. It really is hit and miss.

thought this would be a good chance to whore out my burl JMW that I want to sell but the OP has already made his decision.
 
I would let the cuemaker pick the wood from his stock which is probably more well dried and aged than anything you can buy and send him. Describe what you want and let him do the rest.
 
Back to the OP's question, I prefer Thuya Burl... and Afzelia Burl for contrast.

Here's the cue that Dave Jones of Seattle made for me. I designed it, including the double "Crown" rings. He executed it perfectly. The cue is flawless. All white is ivory. The short points are pink ivory.

Robert, I talked with Joe the owner of Cue Components about this and he asked me to pass this on to you as he doesn't post on AZ

Just so you and the rest of the AZ community know what high grade figured Amboyna and Thuya really look like, we posted some pics. We did this because some of the "high grade" Amboyna we've seen in cues posted on AZ is, at best laughable. Thank you and now that you know what high figure is, you'll know what to expect from your cue maker.
