You match up with the owner of a pool room. You play some cheap should you pay the owners Time if you win ?

No! I've been in this situation, and never been asked that. It's only a question of, "i don't pay time" so should we split the total, or I pay all. In my situation I always paid all (ie half the time) as I thought that was perfectly fair. The person I played was an employee though, not owner.

Pay your half of the time. Unless the owner is a complete dickbag, he isnt going to charge you 2 players time on the table.

I am matched up I expect that the time is running for both of us. If I win then I generally pay time and don't sweat it. Why deprive the owner of the table revenue just because he is the owner? Just treat him like any player and pay the time if you win or offer to split it if that's what you normally do.

Normally I have to win much more than the time to offer to pay the time. If I win a set for $20 and the time is 15 I am not paying their time. It's really a situation thing. If we are playing "real" sets say for a benny a set at least then it's understood that the winner pays time.

I see Barton said the same as I is be going to, but he friggin better have the time running for 2 players! ANd not expect to get $ for his half either!

Discuss it before you play.

15 or so years ago all the guys i played were so great, i really miss it. It didn't matter how much the time was, the winner would pay, no questions, and no discussing beforehand. Now with the young whippersnappers, in the same pool hall, i tried many times to be on this same wavelength. They always want you to pay half when they win. Oh well, things can't stay the same forever -- but i had to stop paying when i won, and not having it paid for when i lost.

Now it is, unfortunately, discuss it before you play for me as well.

I think a smart and safe attitude is to assume you are not automatically entitled to anything worth money, including table time. It's only decent to expect to pay half regardless of the outcome of a set. No free lunches.

Are you responding to 'should you pay your half and the owner's half'? That is the question.

Your input reads like the question is 'should one expect a freebie'...

Whenever the owner of the room I shoot in plays a few sets with me, we're BOTH off the clock. Just the way he rolls. He's a stone cold killer (strong shortstop) and I love playing him. Forces me to bear down as hard as I can, which I need since they're aren't many tournaments here and the Cypriots won't let me play in their league (it leads to qualification for the European Championships, so you gotta be Cypriot to play). Plus, whenever I enter the room, he throws a set of Aramiths in the ball cleaner and clears the best table for me, whether I end up playing him or just doing drills for a few hours. Yeah, I got it good!!!

I would say that paying your half is fair. But the best advice was already given by GoldCrown-----
Discuss it before you play.

How many owners pay table time? And how is it revenue for the owner if it comes out of his own pocket to begin with?

I own 3 coin-ops and one 9' Brunswick at my place (nope - it's not a real big place compared to most, but I have 3 more tables than anyone else in this area ;)). I frequently get asked to play whether on the coin-op tables or the hourly. If it's on the coin-ops, I stand by "loser pays" for the next game...if I lose a game, I open the table and "pay" for the next game.

If players want to play me on the 9', I don't normally charge for the table time...however, I do require no less than $2 a rack "bet"...most of the players know they'll get my best game if I have something to lose...and they have a "chance" to play for free. However, most of them have learned that by doing it this way they would have been better off just paying for the table time...it would have been cheaper...but not as much fun...:p

I say "don't normally charge" because most of my customers are near and dear to my heart...but there's a few that are like nails on a chalk-board...guess which ones have to pay for table time...

There are some decent human beings who play pool.
There are millions of bedbugs who play pool , and think everyone else is stupid or a punk and should pay their way.
This would be a good time to decide which one you want to be.

Seems reasonable to me.

I would expect to pay for myself, but I would be surprised if they asked me to pay for them.

If I win the bet, I pay all the time. If I'm playing a room owner/employee who doesn't have to pay time, I pay my half. If an owner asks me to pay for two players, it would look like they were moving on me to recoup their losses. I would see it as bad form, but I would oblige them. Better karma for me.

Best,
Mike

Sounds pretty F-ed up to me, I own a room and I would not consider doing something like. In fact if I was gambling with a customer, I would not even charge them time win or lose.

Craig,

It's kind of two sides of the same coin. As an owner I wouldn't charge time. However as a player I would expect to pay the single player rate and being charged half of two player time or less would definitely count as a courtesy, not something I think I am owed. I can remember people charging me half of the two player rate when we played and I was happy with that and considered it a discount. As a general rule I take care of owners and employees and they take care of me. I figure it all works out close enough to not worry about it.

Hu

Note: Many of the posts mention "half" or splitting time. Around here single person rate is usually well over half the rate two people pay.

If your owner buddy is honestly putting himself on the clock....... hes a moron. If hes doing it and saying you should pay his time if you win, hes a thief.
Would he put money for "his time" from his pocket in the till when you get done playing? ;)
