Ilona Balner is celebrating her 90th birthday in Scottsdale next week and I hope you join me in in wishing her the greatest birthday ever! We will print off a copy of this thread to present to Ilona as part of her memories, so your birthday wishes and any stories about Palmer Cues or your experiences with Palmer would be appreciated!

Ilona played an important role in the cue making world for over 30 years. Her and Eugene Balner, who passed away in 1972, were inducted into the American Cuemaker's Hall of Fame in 1999. The Balner's founded Palmer Cues in 1963 and for 30 years created many innovations in custom and production cue making techniques, literally helping to create the mass market for affordable custom cues.

Ilona grew up in the small town of Komarom, Hungary, on the border of Czechslovakia. Of her family, she was the sole survivor of the Holocaust. She traveled to Budapest, where she met Eugene Balner and they married in April of 1945, a month before the surrender of Germany in World War II. On January 1, 1957, the Balner's arrived in Camp Kilmer, New Jersey with their two small children, Peter and Susan, as part of "Operation Mercy" - an effort by the United States to assist Hungarian refugees after the revolution in 1956.

Eugene was a trained woodworker and from there proceeded to Paradise Cues and then founded "Palmer" - named as a tribute to Arnold Palmer.

Ilona worked the shop, meticulously hand wrapped the cues with Irish linen, and used her skills to inlay the fancy cues. In fact, the linen on almost every Palmer made was hand wrapped by Ilona! When Eugene passed away in 1972, her and Peter carried on the tradition. Later, Ilona would run the company on her own for 10 years.

More on the Palmer history can be found here:

Please join me in wishing Ilona the best on her 90th.

Thanks!

Chris

Thanks for the history of Palmer cues Chris and your preservation of that history on your site. Happy Birthday Ilona and many more to come! :)

Happy Birthday Ilona! Here is a funny story, A few years back I walked into a pawn shop. I looked over the cheapo cues in they had displayed on the wall then noticed a case leaning in a corner behind the counter. I asked the young lady that was helping me if she would show it to me.

She said No. I asked if it was for sale? Yes but you don't want to see it, Trust me. So I said well even if its a piece of junk I'd like to see it. She reluctantly handed it over with the explanation that she was not the person that had taken it in.

I slid it out of the case and was holding a Palmer model "I" with a Gus forearm no less. I turned the price tag to see what they had marked it at..$175.00 She thought because there was some cracks in the finish it was a junker.

I explained that I would buy a lesser quality cue if the price was in line with the product. After looking up the original trans action it turned out they had loaned $30.00 against it. She offered it to me for thirty five explaining that the computer would not allow her to sell it for cost.

I went ahead and bought it explaining that my nieces and nephews would be able to use it and that way I would not be putting my "good" cue at risk.

My co worker to whom I was giving a ride home was just dying watching this whole thing and had to step out before he burst.

When I returned to the truck he insisted that he got to buy the case from me. I sold him the "It's George" brown sued case for $20.00
and ended up with $15.00 total investment in a beautiful early Palmer I with a Gus forearm!

Take care Ilona,
Jayman

Happy Birthday Ilona!

Happy Birthday Ilona!

One of the first good players I ran into as a teenager (Side Hole Gary) introduced me to Palmer Cues. I fould all the inlays to be quite impressive and the cue played very well.

Several years later, my uncle gave a plain Palmer cue to me that he had picked up as a teen (he was never a good player). I kept that cue in storage for about 20 years until I gifted it, as a restoration project, to my good friend Tate.

Thanks for your contribution to some great memories for me!

Sincerely,

Corey Harper

Happy Birthday!!!!

Happy Birthday Ilona!!

I wish you the very best on your 90th birthday.

My first fancy cue was a Model J, which I owned for many years. I still own almost 40 of your cues from the early years, and have several Ultra Supreme Model 20 cues and several Model M`s.

You and your family made tens of thousands of people across the world satisfied over the years by your significant contribution to the art of cuemaking, and an industry is forever grateful.

My sincerest thanks.

Happy Birthday Ilona! While I never had the pleasure of meeting you or Gene, I have met Peter! I'm the protege' of pocket billiards showman Jack White. You'll no doubt remember Jack fondly, as he sold MANY Palmer cues over the years...many to the college students at his exhibitions! Jack is now 80 and retired, but he sends his best wishes to you!

Ilona Balner 90th

I sold my first Palmer cue stick in 1967 or 1968.

I lived in anchorage, Alaska and sold Palmer cues for around 5-6 years.

I talked to Gene, Peter and Ilona many years ago. I still have an old Rambow that I had them make an extra long shaft (with the screw off ferrule) at a cost of $9.50.

Still straight!!

They made a great product back then.

I wish Ilona the very best. My mom just turned 90 (Jan 11th). May they both enjoy good health.

Happy Birthday Mrs. Balner

Wishing you a Happy and Healthy Birthday! My fond memories of coming to your shop as a young child was a special treat. My Father George Antonakos was a big dealer of Palmer cues in Pouhkeepsie New York for many years. He owned a poolroom for over 30 years, along with a supply company.
As a spoiled son, I must have played with every Palmer model for years. They all played great, and I would love to pick mine out at the shop in Elizabeth. I can even remember Gus Szamboti being there. Pete would bring me around the shop, I even would watch cues being sprayed. Mr. Balner put a silver foil in a window of a cue- my first, and it said " Greg The Hustler", how cool was that for a 10 year old.
I could talk forever, but thank you for some of my fondest memories growing up!
Best wishes to the whole Balner family,
Sincerely,
Greg Antonakos

Happy Birthday Ilona!

Good health and much happiness to you!
I may not have been blessed like was mentioned already in owning a Palmer but I was blessed recently in having a great hitting cue made by Lee Peppers with beautifully rich figured rosewood that was originally carefully picked by the Palmer shop.

Best wishes,

Kevin

Happy birthday to the first lady of cuemaking..... you and your family grew an impressive cuemaking tree in NJ.

Thanks for the classic designs which are still emulated in cues to this day.

Happy Birthday Llona!

I have a little peculiar story. In 1974 I went to a hall in So Philly and watched a young Allen Hopkins tear up The Miz in a 9 Bball money match. After which I decided to buy a new cue out of their glass case. It was distinctly told to me it was a Palmer. As I have come to learn from this forum (and with much help from Tate :)), it is not a Palmer. :( But it sure has a lot of Palmer influences and I wouldn't doubt that whomever made it worked for or with the Balners. I've had Schick, Barry Zamboti, and Abbott look at pic's of it as well. It seems destined to never be identified...

Happy Birthday, Ilona! A first catalog, model 6, started my cue obsession. I've owned a few Palmers and a little Palmer memorabilia over the years and enjoyed it all. Thanks for all your contributions to the world of pool!

Best always,

Steve Feld
